Cost of a RAID array (side topic)

This is getting to be a side or off-topic but.....I have heard the 2 to 2.5%
range also and in many studies of industry leaders in various segments 2%
comes up often. But with rare exceptions (such as the odd year with a total
system change) in 25 years of mostly mfg IS I have never seen it average
even 1%. In fact I have found 1%, when I can get it, to be very
satisfactory for using technology to help enable company growth. Once
things are growing the real $ part of the percentage grows too.

But it ain't as much "how much" as what is done with it. I've seen some mfg
companies with relatively huge IT budgets totally squander it on poorly
defined projects and misunderstood technology. I suspect too there is a
practical minimum real $ amount so where a $1M company might not be able to
get by on $10K (1%) for IT a $100M company could do nicely on $500K (1/2
%). The three biggest factors I have seen affect the required % are - # of
users, # of locations and custom systems vs. "off the shelf" (more
programmers or consultants). Bottom line is I guess I am skeptical about
using "one size fits all" percentage as a benchmark either of effectiveness
or Mgmt. support. Still it would certainly be an interesting survey to
correlate sales $ to IT budget to extraneous factors within the Vantage
community.

Shirley-

Heard an interesting statistic from another IS person a couple of years ago:
In manufacturing, the IS budget (including salary and benefits, plus
hardware/software support, replacement, repair) should equal 2.5% of the
gross yearly sales of the company. That's depressing, huh? But remember,
you are in one of the fastest-growing professions in the world, and the
demand is always higher than supply, and will be for about 5-8 more years
from everything I've read. Best of luck to you.

Thanks for everyone's support, I have been quietly looking. Hopefully, an
oportunity will occur soon with someone in my area, hopefully with Vantage,
I truly like the software. Irregardless, I'm here now and they are entitled
to my best till I'm not here. Again, Thanks.

Shirley
