Create a read and write Progress ODBC connection?

Also, because all progress files in epicor have compiled triggers, most
writes will fail anyway unless you can find a way to disable the
triggers.

Not to be a cocky a**hole. But I know my Epicor very very very well, and
also progress. Let me tell you how horrible of an idea writing directly
to it is.
Please DO NOT UNDER any circumstance write to the database SPECIALLY
through ODBC unless you hate your job and would like to destroy your DB.
If you tell us what you are trying to accomplish we may be able to help
you through other methods.

Progress is NOT SQL!

I'm now in a Progress environment after having worked in an MS SQL environment for many years, and I'm stumped as to how to go about creating the required account in Progress so that I can create a read and write ODBC connection to our live DB.

I'd like to update a large amount of data using MS Access but the ODBC connection I have is read only.

Can anyone help ?.

Thanks.
Requisite 'You should go through the BO instead of ODBC' diatribe, aside...

There is an account that comes preset with the DB.

Though hopefully the db admin has changed the password from the default.

Sadly, I've never seen one changed. I don't think most people know it's

Actually...

It's not the default username and password, default, there is no username or
password for the DB and it's up to someone to make sure that there is one
created in the first place.

You'd like to presume that, however, it's not the case.

All computers already have a system DSN setup using just this users/pass, however it's read only (or at least Access can't write to the tables, I've been testing against an unused UD table)

I have not been able to get Win 7 odbc to work with Read / Write but XP works.  Anyone know how to get Win 7 set to READ_COMMITTED for Vantage 8.03?
Â
You go to Control Panel / Administrative Tools / ODBC Data Source  then select the system DSN that you are using,  and then hit the configure button. Next select the advanced tab.
Drop down the default Isolation level and change from READ_UNCOMMITTED to READ_COMMITTED.
Â
That will BYPASS all triggers and will causes problems when you change data in Vantage tables and do not get all the links correct. A UD table and/or UD fields should be safe.
Â
Warning also that Access (when read_committed) will lock the records and keep them locked until you exit Access. It does not release them when you exit the query.Â

Ouch, locked tables.

Hmm, I best tread carefully...

Yeah, you really should avoid writing to the DB directly if you can avoid
it. You can really hose things up if you aren't careful. Accessing it via
ODBC just adds another layer of fun.

I don't mean to sound like an ass or make assumptions. But if you're going
ODBC because you don't know how to work with the BOs, it's really worth
taking the time to learn.

Myself and others on the list would probably be happy to help you get it
sorted out.

Not to be a cocky a**hole. But I know my Epicor very very very well, and
also progress. Let me tell you how horrible of an idea writing directly to
it is.
Please DO NOT UNDER any circumstance write to the database SPECIALLY through
ODBC unless you hate your job and would like to destroy your DB. If you tell
us what you are trying to accomplish we may be able to help you through
other methods.

Progress is NOT SQL!

Also, if you must access the DB directly, use 4GL.
