Crystal 8.0 DLLs with Vantage 5.20

Experiment:
- Ran Job Traveler in Print Preview using Vantage 5.20
- Could not get to run on Server (missing CRPE32.DLL message) -
(probably a mapped drive issue in client install on server)
- Loaded Patch 210 (per support) - Note: many crystal issues resolved in
210
- Loaded 5.20 Client on my PC (kept 4.0 client) and previews native 5.20
job traveler just fine
- In Crystal 8.0 set location on our custom traveler to VntgWk52 (for
dbfs) and verified DB
- Previewed in 8.0 developer screen - looks OK
- Renamed Traveler.rpt in epic52\userform to traveler-520.rpt (to save it)
- Copied newly verified custom version into epic52\userform as
Traveler.rpt
- Ran in Vantage 5.20 - It looks identical to report run in Vantage 4.00
Preliminary Conclusion:
- Customized CR 8.0 report can run using CR 8.5 dll's in Vantage 5.20
- Caveat 1 - if it doesn't work don't complain to Epicor support; you're
on your own
- Caveat 2 - no guarantees that every CR 8.0 will work - test,test,test
- Caveat 3 - Yet to try a distributed report (but they carry their own
dll's so should work)

And a warning - this is all an act of desperation to preserve distributed
reports and get to 5.20 by Oct. 5. If I had the time I would go totally CR
8.5 and use web distribution and will definitely do so as soon as possible.
Trying CR 8.0 with Vantage 5.20 may be asking for trouble but it looks like
either the "rock" or the "hard place" for me at the moment.

It has been dictated to me that I will have our massively modified Job
Traveler (all three flavors) and other Crystal forms ready for 5.20 by Oct.
1. Because several of these are distributed reports and the distribution
wizard won't run under Crystal 8.5 and because I don't have time to mess
with web distribution I am seeking an alternative. Has anyone tried to
replace the 5.20 Crystal 8.5 DLLs on the server with the old 8.0 DLLs? I
am not going to re-convert the 5.20 forms with all the changes I have made
so I don't care about running any of the provided CR forms. I would like to
compile and distribute them in 8.0 (as they are now, but with new fields,
etc...) and have them run from Vantage. I believe there are 5 or so DLLs
that would need to be replaced on the server.

Conversely, does anyone know if the 8.5 DLLs are backward compatible with
8.0 compiled reports? With all the warnings in the install notes I suspect
not but it would save a lot of trouble if they are.

Thanks,

Todd,
I once (awhile back) installed the 8.0 compiled reports 'download' from Crystal into my 8.5 Crystal reports. I tried it out on one report, and it worked fine. I'm not currently using it, but it couldn't hurt to try, could it? Worst thing would be you would have to maybe reinstall CR 8.5 or something.

Well here is what I did. Crystal support will tell you that you
don't need the compiler because they have given you everything you
need to write compiled programs or web-based reports using the CR
designer tool and CR ActiveX controls. So that's what I did. If you
have an exsisting .rpt file that represents your custom layout I can
send you the code you need to create a VB project. You can then
compile the VB app. It is really a better way to distribute
reports. If you know VB or any other COM compliant language you can
do so much more with reports. I control duplex printing and odd/even
page prints using code. email: peter.paasch@... or
Phone:262-252-4003 ext. 174 if you want the code.

I currently use Visual Basic to deploy custom crystal reports, and it works
rather well. However, I've ran into dll issues with crystal 8 and 8.5
deployments, even when using the VB setup package.

A temporary work-around is to install the crystal report program on all the
clients until we go web based, deleting the crw32.exe report designer file
on all but my workstation.

When we upgrade to 5.2, we'll also be upgrading to a Crystal / Visual Studio
.NET based report deployment setup.

Thaddeus,

If you check Crystal's website you will see some KB articles on using
VB's package and deployment wizard. It has some problems. I have
gotton around this by customizing the setup scripts. If you manually
insert all the files into the script it seems to work. I have a
number of 8.5 compiled VB reports working and we are still using 5.1.
I know the dll's for Vantage 5.1 are still a combo of v5, v6, v7. We
keep them on the network drive so only Vantage seems to know where to
find them. That keeps version conflicts at bay. If you need help
with the script I am no expert, but I might be able help out.
