Ted,

I'd like to be able to contact you off line to ask you some things about the server set up, if possible.

Would you be willing to email me?

My company is still in testing, but I am beginning to produce a
number of reports for various departments. I am trying to decide how
best to distribute them. With Crystal 7, there is a distribution
expert that is pretty handy, but they do away with that in Crystal
8. I was really considering upgrading to Crystal 8, (I've installed
it on one machine for testing), until I learned that there is no
distribution expert.

They recommend using a Windows application like Visual Basic, or a
Crystal Web Component Server instead of the executable created by the
distribution expert. I know a little VB so I created a quick app. to
test launching one report from it. It does work, although I don't
see any real advantages over the distribution expert in version 7, in
fact I think it is more work.

I would like to hear how you are using Crystal and how you are
distributing reports. Also, I am curious about using OLAP. Is
anyone using this, is it possible with Progress, how does one get
started with OLAP?

Thanks,

Brian,
Crystal 8 does provide a download to install the Distribution Expert from their WebSite. I have installed it, but I haven't actually used it yet. The buttons for distribution are the same as in Crystal 7.

The Crystal Web Component is pretty exciting to me. The downside is you have to have it installed on a server. I have successfully got it running on the Vantage server, but Epicor does not recommend this, and you have to tweek a bunch of things. That said, if you had an NT server running separate from Vantage with the Web Server Component these are the advantages:

1. A workstation only needs IE 3 or Netscape 3 to run the report.
2. A workstation does NOT need the ODBC drivers to run the report. All the data is accessed from the Server (which DOES need ODBC). Thus, one copy of Merant 3.5 ODBC drivers are needed instead of countless numbers. (except if you already have the drivers this won't be an advantage).
3. A report run via Web Server retains the "Tree View" that you get to use when Designing a report. A user can click on a group on the left and go right to it in the report.

A Note: I do like working with Crystal 8 slightly better than Crystal 7 for designing reports, but it won't be worth it to you to change "just" for report design benefits. I do believe overall it has been a worthwhile purchase for us at Liberty.

Hope this helps with your decision.

Troy,

Thanks for the info, I believe we may go with the Web Server option.
Do you know if that method allows drill-downs? Do you know how the
data is refreshed, and can you use parameters to ask the user for
info to filter by?

Thanks again,

Brian,
1. Yes, the method also allows drill downs, something compiled reports can't do. There are some other variations on this same theme as well which we haven't explored yet. They are called something like "conditional reports". Meaning, you have an area for a subreport, but it doesn't get the data unless you click on that blank section. Then it will get the additional information if you want. It's meant to be a time-saver, so you're not getting extra data you don't need until you need it.

2. The data refreshes after a certain time specifed, or by clicking the lightning bolt. If I remember correctly (this is all outlined in the manual which I don't have in front of me right now), each subsequent user that accesses the report at the same time will share the same information for about 4 minutes, then it will go to the database again if a new user accesses the report while others are still looking at the data (unless a user clicks the lightning bolt/refresh button, then it will go get new info again.) This is done to reduce traffic to the data base each time a report is run - which improves report access time. We haven't tested this, as we are only using Web Server on a few newer reports we've just designed. Also, the manual says that the Web Server Component may be slightly slower than the other methods of accessing reports.

3. Yes, you can use the same parameters that you use in Report designer and in compiled reports. The input screen in Crystal 8 looks a little different and is a bit more intuitive (i.e. for multiple inputs, you don't have to click a tab for the next input, you select the new variable from a list.) than Crystal 7.

Ted,
Were you able to get Crystal Web Server working on the Vantage Server as a service? We couldn't get past the login screen when running as a service. We had to disable the Crystal Web Server in the Services area of NT (which Crystal said was due to something with progress), then RUN the Web Server program from a DOS prompt and it runs minimized on the task bar. as a service? We couldn't get past the login screen when running as a
service. We had to disable the Crystal Web Server in the Services area of NT
(which Crystal said was due to something with progress), then RUN the Web
Server program from a DOS prompt and it runs minimized on the task bar. Is
this the case for you?

Ted,

I'd like to be able to contact you off line to ask you some things about the server set up, if possible.

Would you be willing to email me?

I've got it running fine as a service. There could be some permissions that
would have to be set for certain files. Version 7 had some issues with NT
permissions when running as a service. Look for any files on the Seagate KB
that have infinite logon. There are plently of pointers there.
