Before going to alot of work, change the speed setting from auto to
something like 100 - full duplex,(or what fits your network). Also make
sure there isn't a checkmark in "allow the computer to turn this device off
to save power", in the power setting for the card .
This would be OT except that it probably also affects Vantage....
I am installing a bunch of new PCs in our office. Sort of preparing for Vantage 8.0 someday. Pentium IV 2.8Ghz, 1GB RAM, 80GB disk and 100Mb networking. So when transfering user data from old PC to our NAS server and then to the new PC I am running into a curious situation. I can transfer 1.2GB to the NAS server in about 15 minutes. But the load back to the new, much faster, PC shows it will take about 3 hours.
The NIC is the onboard networking on the motherboard (MSI 661FM Micro-ATX) using SiS 963/963L chip. It is linked to our 10/100/1000 3COM switch (as was the older PC). Neither the old or new PCs have ever had anything "tweaked" - just running as they come out of the box. Speed setting is Auto-Negotiate.
Any hints about what to try to speed these file transfers up? Either in the BIOS, the NIC settings or the Switch? I can't see any reasons why the old PCs can transfer so much faster to the NAS box faster than the copy to the new PC is running. If this transfer is so slow I am wondering about Vantage performance - especially for reports building big srt files in the working directory on the client. I have 4 more new PCs to do so speeding them up would be really nice.

Good suggestion. I will try that on the next one. Same A/V (Symantec) running on both PCs but perhaps there is extra scrutiny on the write side than when reading to copy elsewhere.

If you transfer from the NAS to the "old" pc what kind of xfer rate do you

Not sure how you mean this. The NAS is conencted to the 10/100/1000 switch at 1000Mbps. All the PCs are 100Mbps. I'm not sure how to monitor the xfer rate while it is taking place. All I can say is PC-to-NAS for 1GB = about 12 Min. (about 11Mbps) and NAS to new-PC is about 3 hours (about 750Kbps) about 15X slower (all numbers are rough calcs).
mainly was wondering if there is some setting I should be looking for on the new NICs. I did see where they have an entry for IP address. I assign IP to all PCs (no DHCP) so should I be on the NIC too?
Thanks,
-Todd C.

Are you sure the new pc is connecting at 100 Mbps? Check the duplex
mode of the NIC and make sure it is set for 100/FULL. I have had cases
where a NIC will not auto-negotiate properly with the switch, and
forcing 100/FULL helps.

Todd,
If those are XP workstations? Then its probably the notorious SMB
Redirector "slow copy"... a known XP issue that is puportedly fixed in XP
SP2. But that may be case of the cure is worse than the afflcition. ;)

Not XP. I won't run XP anywhere here. I hear of way too many problems (like this) with it and Win2K is just fine.
I'll try the suggestion Brandon posted to force 100Mbps and re-copy from the NAS to a new folder on the last user's PC. I should know pretty quickly if it is estimating shorter time than three hours.
