Custom Crystal Reports on V8 SQL Server

Actually the best thing that I've found to use is the OLE DB (ADO)
connection when going directly from a Crystal report to SQL, not just
Vantage info. Verify that it works for everyone, then all you need to
do, is to add it to the menu.

To try and answer your questions or just comment on them, there are many
ways to approach this which is probably why you are getting different
answers from them.

1. Again, I would use the OLE DB (ADO) connection, not ODBC. ODBC
required the ODBC connection be on every PC that would ever run the
report.
2. The ODBC Data-server in Progress would only need to be started
if you were going through Progress ODBC
3. I'm not sure if you're talking about the SQL Server Agent or the
System Agent in Vantage. I'm assuming it's the Vantage System Agent in
which case if you don't use ODBC, then you won't need to put one in
there at all; we don't, you can just imbed the report ID/password into
the report itself, use integrated security, or whichever works for the
type of report you are distributing.

I believe this to be correct, although I may have something not quite
right as we're trying to figure everything out on our end also. If
someone knows different, please let me know.

Subject: [Vantage] Custom Crystal Reports on V8 SQL Server

Has anyone on SQL successfully added a custom Crystal report to a menu?
I'm getting mixed messages from Epicor about how to set this up.

My questions:

1. Which ODBC driver to use, MS SQL Server or DataDirect?
2. Does the ODBC DataServer in the Progress Explorer need to be
started?
3. What ODBC username and password goes in the System Agent setup? Is
this a SQL Server user account or a Vantage user account?

I created a report that runs fine on my machine but when I run it from
the menu, I get the following application error "Load report failed."
This report is based on a MS SQL Server ODBC DSN which I suspect is the
problem since it's going directly at the tables and bypassing the data
dictionary. This is where I'm getting mixed messages from Epicor. One
person told me to go directly to SQL, the other told me it goes through
Progress.

Brad -

We have several Crystal reports attached through a Vantage menu.

Our IT manager set up the ODBC driver, however I can answer your System
Task Agent question.

The ODBC username is the username of the report developer and the
password in that users password. Then when the report is launched (after
it is attached to a menu ) there is a check box to use the default user
and password. After the first time it appears this box gets checked
automatically.

There are also permission issues at the server level. Again our IT
manager can answer these questions.
