Data Collection auto start. [SMC WIRE FABRICATORS]

Don't tell me I am the only one out there that has set the
DataCollection.VTG file to read only. I find this works just great, and
keeps me from having to modify the file every time I install vantage for
someone...to add back in the code for the timeout utility (thank you very
much Michael).

Its not the "Vantage User ID" that is the concern, it is the VTG file
itself. For some reason when you start Vantage (or Data Collection) the
program opens these files (also the VANTAGE.INI) in write mode. Its only
for a split second, but if a workstation locks up with the file in write
mode, and since only one person can be writing at a time, your network (not
Vantage) is preventing you from logging in. (it has to be a speed issue
because the biggest problem computers are also the slowest). You can give
each user their own VTG and INI file on their home directory and set it up
to use these, then you can avoid the huge network file sharing lock issue.

Also I'm not certain, but doesn't Vantage only allow you to have one data
collection UserID? If this is the case and you are using different UserID's
on each data collection terminal then you would be using full Vantage
licenses for Data Collection.

Patrick:

I believe why its recommended (also why we use different UserIDs for each of
our Data Collection Terminals) is the fact that in older versions of Vantage
(also maybe in newer versions as well), if a terminal locks up, ALL Data
collection terminals are down and cannot be used until this terminal has
been booted off the progress server.

So, if shop1 locks theirs then shop2 can still function without problems.

That's my understanding anyways and when we used to use only one UserID this
would happen to us all the time. BIG pain in the butt. However, I wasn't
aware that Epicor Technical Support recommended this method ....

So that's my guess why they recommend this. I could be wrong though.

What's the advantage of each having their own login, I switch from this to
one so when shop users screwed around with settings I only had one users to
fix and it keeps all stations uniform.

I was also told by Tech support that I should copy the plant floor
vtg file to seperate files for each DC Machine
AKA dc1.vtg, dc2.vtg etc etc
Then on each vtg file modify it so they are each using their own log
in into vantage
So far so good

We're planning on moving from 5.1 to 5.2 at the end of the month. A
couple of questions have arisen. Our data collectors are running Windows
95. Must they all be upgraded to 98 (as Vantage recommends) or will 5.2
work with 95? Also, apparently the memory requirements for workstations is
significantly greater. What are the experiences you've had with this?

Phil,

I have 3 data collection stations - 2 are Win98 and one is Win95. The Win95
machine seems to run the same - no problems. We have been on 5.2 for over a
week now.

*Side note* We are running into the same problem as Todd with the
Engineering workbench - I know the patch is coming, but is there a fix for
this? I have methods checked out that cannot seem to be checked back in.

Only workaround wse have seen is to "Un-Check out" the part (thus losing all
changes) then check it out again, re-do the changes but this time not
resequence the operations, just live with gaps where any are deleted and
check it back in. At least until after the patch is released, then you
could go back an resequence them. I believe any jobs created from the part
could be resequenced at job creation.

We are eagerly awaiting the patch being released, hopefully before the end
of the week so I can apply it. Otherwise it will wait another week until I
get back from Perspectives.

I have just started to work with data collection. Having employees clock in

I only want the bar code reader avalible to take input and have the

Scott & Gary,

Sorry, I didn't read Scott's email thorougly enough. I'm not sure how to automatically have DC open up when the PC is restarted. My email was on how to have the DC screen automatically open up when the user clicks on the icon. Sorry about that! "My bad!"

Any of the DC workstations that have W2K or WinNT I make the users that log onto these only have minimal permissions. I set up their permissions via Active Directory on our W2K Server and/or locally on the workstation. Locally on the workstation in W2K you can go into Control Panel, Users and Passwords and give them either "Administrator, Power User, or Standard User" permissions. Most of the shop DC's I give "Standard User" permissions. Under this setting it doesn't even allow them to change their computer time or add printers. Yet, they can still get into Vantage and Excel, make changes, and do just about everything else they need to do except mess up the computer. Unfortunately none of these options work for Win 9x. Steven Simser told me about some software called "Fortress" that allows you to lock out workstations as much as you want. He said that it can be very specific to what you want them locked out of and what you don't. It sounds really cool!

Active Directory on a W2K Server is a little more indepth on how it allows you to customize permissions.

Just a few wild thoughts for turning off keyboard/mouse.
1. Boot with them connected then take them away. It should still run but might require them to be back to reboot.

2. If auto reboot is needed then perhaps a cheap KVM box with "keep alive" feature. Take the keyboard & mouse away and maybe the KVM would be enough to allow it to reboot? I think you can get a very basic 2-port keep-alive KVM switch for $40 or so.

3. If you are scanning with a keyboard wedge type scanner or in-line scanner (on Y-cable) might this not be enough to signal a keyboard is present?

4. Could there be something in the handicap adaptability features that could be used to alter input methods?

If you don't at least have a mouse then how can they navigate screens and make choices such as direct or indirect labor or setup versus production? But then, most of the Data Collection screens have a mousable keyboard on the screen so that sort of defeats not having a keyboard either.

Really wild system enhancement idea.... Option for Securable Employee ID... never display the employee ID in DC instead using **** like a password. Then print barcoded ID on badge (with no readable version). Employee never knows their ID and can't type in someone else's for them (but could use their badge). Never mind, scanning into Notepad (or even Run... command line) would defeat that. Guess you just have to trust them or watch them very closely.

There are several methods to get it to start automatically.
First use TweakUI to automatically log on the computer to the network, then
drop a shortcut to the icon in the startup folder.
If you want to be a little more creative, you can add an entry to the
registry under localmachine/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run
called Vantage that has a value of V:\vantage\plant floor.vtg.
You can then use the "VantageLogin=shop/shop" addition from Wendy (shop/shop

You can just about remove everything possible. Just remember to leave

this setting it doesn't even allow them to change their computer time or add
printers. Yet, they can still get into Vantage and Excel, make changes, and
do just about everything else they need to do except mess up the computer.
Unfortunately none of these options work for Win 9x. Steven Simser told me
about some software called "Fortress" that allows you to lock out
workstations as much as you want. He said that it can be very specific to
what you want them locked out of and what you don't. It sounds really cool!

Active Directory on a W2K Server is a little more indepth on how it allows
you to customize permissions.

Scott,

Put a login line at the bottom of your "Plant Floor.vtg" and it will
automatically open up the data collection screen when the employees click
on
the icon. Our PlantFloor.vtg looks like this:

[Vantage Startup]
Executable=T:\Progress\bin\prowin32.exe
Database=T:\Vantage\db\vantage
IniFile=T:\Vantage\vantage.ini
ParameterFile=T:\Vantage\db\Vantage.pf
ConnectOptions=-N TCP -H server2 -S epic51 -ld vantage
TempDirectory=C:\vntgwk51
StartupProcedure=flmenu.w
OtherParameters=-rand 2 -q -basekey ini

VantageLogin=shop/shop

I have just started to work with data collection. Having employees clock
in
and out with bar-coded badges. I would like the Plant Floor to start
automatically if the PC is restarted. Any Ideas?

I only want the bar code reader avalible to take input and have the
keyboard/mouse locked up.

Thanks.

There is a program out there called twekui
Get it at Microsoft's web site at
http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/
NTTweakUI.asp

This will allow you to hide a lot of things such as things in the
control panel, desktop, stuff fin my computer etc.
PLUS When you log on as administrator, it gives you the option to
have a auto logon
Then logon as that user (We use Data1 Data2 Data3 etc)
And place the Vantage plant floor icon in the startup menu

NOW
To make the machine reboot automatically every night
There is a application on the internet for free called psshutdown
I recommend getting the whole pstools for free
Get it here
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/psshutdown.shtml

What I did is copied the psshutdown utility to each machines winnt
directory
Then I use smartscheule to schedule the reboot
Here is the place to get it
http://www.webattack.com/Freeware/system/fwauto.shtml

On each machine I have a job that uses the following syntax

psshutdown \\data1 -f -r -l
The -f forces vantage to be killed
The -r reboots the machine
The -l is for the local machine

I also schedule the machines to reboot a minute or two apart from
each other
That way they all don't hit vantage at the same time

Then
If you want a nice free program to help you monitor what people are
doing and to use in case there is a problem and you don't want to
walk down to the plant floor
Get VNC this is also free and you can remote manage the desktops
Freaks people out when they see the computer doing stuff by itself
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/index.html

The PS Tools are nice because it includes a bunch of items that are
useful for us solo systems administrators!

I wrote a two batch files with the ps tools
One reboot every machine on the floor
Another just shuts them down (I have to go out and physically reboot
them)

Today I connected to all 8 of my data collection PC's via VNC
Exited out of plant floor
Locked the window so no one could use it

Then I upgrade Vantage to the latest patch level
When I was done and ready to get the DC machines back up and running
I just double clicked on the reboot icon on my desktop and all my DC
Machines rebooted, logged back into the network and fired up plant
floor. Nice when you are doing patches or when the server crashes
If the server crashes and I don't want people messing around with the
DC Units I just double click the shut down icon and all 8 machines
are shut down

It has been a great help

Now I am working on locking the machines down even tighter but I am
still working on that

One other thing that someone on the yahoo group shared with me is a
set of 3D Icons which was helpful to the people on the floor. LARGE
Pointer with high visibility colors like bright red or yellow.
People are glad I installed those.

And don't forget PolEdit - Remove Run Command, Remove Control Panel, Remove
Desktop items, etc.

You can just about remove everything possible. Just remember to leave
yourself a backdoor somewhere incase you need to get in and make changes to
the system.

You can then use the "VantageLogin=shop/shop" addition from Wendy (shop/shop
being your data collection user/pass).
Granted I am only on 5.0, but the concepts should work.
I also don't want anyone clicking the icon, so I hide it from the start menu
before I take admin rights away from the data user.
Hope this helps.

Scott & Gary,

Sorry, I didn't read Scott's email thorougly enough. I'm not sure how to
automatically have DC open up when the PC is restarted. My email was on how
to have the DC screen automatically open up when the user clicks on the
icon. Sorry about that! "My bad!"

Any of the DC workstations that have W2K or WinNT I make the users that log
onto these only have minimal permissions. I set up their permissions via
Active Directory on our W2K Server and/or locally on the workstation.
Locally on the workstation in W2K you can go into Control Panel, Users and
Passwords and give them either "Administrator, Power User, or Standard User"
permissions. Most of the shop DC's I give "Standard User" permissions. Under
this setting it doesn't even allow them to change their computer time or add
printers. Yet, they can still get into Vantage and Excel, make changes, and

Sent a CTRL ALT DEL to it and locked the workstation
(They are all running NT 4 ws)
I was also told by Tech support that I should copy the plant floor
vtg file to seperate files for each DC Machine
AKA dc1.vtg, dc2.vtg etc etc
Then on each vtg file modify it so they are each using their own log
in into vantage
So far so good
