The use of Wyse Winterms (or similar) is the best opition IMO.
No moving parts = very low failure rate. Which is important
if you have a lot of stations.

Joe,
Can you give me some idea of the cost of the Wyse terminals and where you
buy them? Their web site isn't very forthcoming with info.
TIA.

They are around $600-$700 each. I got a distributor name from
Wyse. Call them or look on their web site. I used to use
old pc's but they are way too much trouble. Winterms require
no configuration, no drivers, no software to load. Just turn
them on. In the event that one did die you just plug a new one in.

We have just moved to Vantage version 4 and are still putting out fires, they have calmed quite a bit, but now I have a new problem. Yesterday I had two employees go to end activity and clock out and received a message " record already in use" I checked and nobody had their ID pulled on on any other DC screen, but sill I have the error. I checked ERANET and it just says if you cant find the workstation with the person pulled up in data collection you have to shutdown the database and start it back up. Have any of you seen this problem? And is there an easy solution?
Thanks

Paul,
We have seen this problem from time to time, and we have found that if the
user goes back to the workstation on which they started the activity, it
usually lets them end it. Not very scientific, but we have found it to work
most of the time. When it doesn't, we shutdown and restart that night, and
let the supervisor adjust the user's times the next day. We always shut the
server down, instead of just the database. It makes NT happy.

We have this happen almost daily at our other plant that connects over
terminal server. I just go into PROMON and disconnect that station (or
sometimes both) instead of having to shutdown the database. (Each of our
data collection stations has a separate login so we can easily identify it
in PROMON.)

I have encounter this often. If a workstation crashes, then this can
happen. I find out which workstation the person was using. Then use
Promon to disconnect that workstation.

Also, concerning Terminal Server, Sometimes you have to reset the client
from TS because the client comes back into a locked session. If you clear
both, you will take care of the problem completely until the next time they
crash or get bumped out of Vantage.

Option 1. If you have the source code you could change this.
Option 2. Use a windows macro product such as Ground Control. When you want
to open this window execute the macro instead to open the window and change
whatever default settings you like.
In version 5.0 you can change the SORT BY default but not the JOB STATUS. I
would hope they add this along with others in the future. Like PO Browse to
default to the User in the BUYER select? Both would be a good suggestion for
version 6.0

Goodmorning Vantage Users,
Just curious if anyone has solutions to somehow change the default job
status
filter for clocking into production. It currently defaults to "open'" and
shows a listing off all jobs to possible have labor clock into when I would
like it to default to "released." From what Epicor says this can not be
changed, I just had to see if any users are as frustrated as I am and
possible have alternatives to this ?
Thank You,

Thank you to those who responded to my third database question. I have
another for the group....data collection. We are currently using time cards
and labor entry, but are looking into changing to shop floor data
collection. What I would like to know from you who are using it is:
What equipment do you use and have you tried
What issues came up with implementation
Any helpful hints or things to watch for
If there is someone in the group that would not mind, I would be glad to
speak one on one about this issue. TIA (again)

We have been using data collection for about two years. Use touchscreens with old 200mhz PC's as timeclocks. We had custom programming to modify the screen to be similar to what we had used before (KRONOS system) and to change the order of questions to make them more simple. The biggest source of error for timekeeping is have a screen that confuses computer iliterate users.
Incidently, as we move to cell manufacturing, we are doing away with the timeclocks and going to paper, so in the very near future we won't be using data collection nearly as much. Vantage 5.1 significantly changes the timekeeping screens, by the way. We are still on 5.0.

We are in the process of integrating data collection stations onto the shop
floor. We have purchased a touch screen solution encased in protection
cabinets. My question to the group is how do we set up data collection users
without exhausting a user license, and is there a way to launch the data
collection module automatically?
What I am mainly looking for is a logical thought process on how to handle
security. Any help would be appreciated.

We have found that setting up tweakui on the touch screens lets us lock
everything down on the Data Collection PC's. We then put the Data
Collection.vtg/Plant Floor.vtg in the startup group of Windows. When the
system is powered on, automatically logs on to our network (done with
tweakui) and then starts the Data Collections screen. In the data
collection.vtg file we added the line vantagelogin=username/password so that
it logs into Data Collections automatically. We also disabled all access to
anything else with tweakui and removed all desktop icons.
We have started using Terminal Services with a Flat Paneled Touch Screen all
in one thin client that we plan on replacing all of our current units with.
Its working very well.

Instead of launching the standard Vantage.vtg, use the
Data Collection.vtg. This won't use a full license.
(It also assumes you purchased Data Collection User
licenses from Epicor) A Data Collection user has
limited access to Vantage regardless of the Login ID.
That should help out on your security issue. We also
use a product called WinLock Pro that will also lock
the users out of workstation functions and once
configured properly pretty much shuts them out of
anything other than Vantage and reboot the PC.

Nancy,
Plant floor is the data collection - go into edit on the plant floor.vtg
file and make sure it says Vantagedatacollectionuser=yes and it shouldn't
use a full license. Make sure your desktop shortcuts are pointing to this
file. They still appear to be a user if you are looking in promon, but they
are not. Hope this helps....God Bless

We've used since day one (Sept. 2000) and it has worked very well. We went "cheap" with home built minimal PCs (Celeron 500Mhz at the time). We use keyboard line barcode scanner guns (spent for extra rugged) although we are not yet enforcing mandatory use. Total cost per location was about $700 not counting Vantage DC license. Training was a one hour session with small groups of people at the start and usage is easy enough that not much more was needed. Biggest negative issue has been entering piece counts accurately. Biggest unused potential benefit - getting people to enter labor notes to flag production problems so we would have a history for future jobs. Having real-time view during the day of job status has been very valuable. We don't do material bar coding, but have found it handy to scan UPS (and other shippers') tracking number directly from box label into packing slip field.

collection? We are seeking a method to allow or mechanics to take a module

you can edit any labor entries by going into job management/general
operations/labor entry.
If you want to edit today's shop employee entries, that particular person
must be out of data collection.
If they are still logged in, the entries are held in queue, and cannot be
viewed in the labor entry panel.

I do it everyday by going into labor entry
I can only do the day before entries unless the person logs out of
data collection

For those that are using data collection, especially if you are running
DC 24 - 7, would you please share the specs/operating system of the
machines you are using it on.

Various from P-II-350Mhz/65MB RAM to Celeron 550Mhz/64MB RAM. All minimal HD, no CD, disabled floppy, pass protected BIOS. All Win-98. Shop floor with where the "bone" PCs go to die. We have enough locations and spare parts so if one goes out they can user others until repaired or replaced.

Linda,
Not using scanners - all done thru manual input. But the 2 data collection
machines' specs are:
P2-266 256M RAM
P3-733 256M RAM
No Problems with the operation. But one is in really bad environment -
needs to be replaced once a year. I try to keep those machines as cheap as
possible and still be able to run the virus software and Drive Image at
night.

On Vantage 6.0.
The machines are slow, but...
I am running NT4 on each with 64 megs ram, 10/100 NICs, PII 233, small HD
(1.2 to 2.0 Gig), and a barcode reader (prox scanner, Keyboard wedge), one
with a touch screen, all with TweekUI to further restrict "playing". All
start DC at login and are set to login automatically.
Only other software on each is VNC for remote control.

I am wondering how Non-Conformances are handled when there is multiple reasons for the Non-Conformances. We have found it to be cumbersome when a user enters data under Scrap and Non-Conformance when there is only one reason code available. We would like to be able to enter under these fields with multiple quantities and reason codes without opening and closing the screen when there are different reasons. Any input or suggestions please share them with me, thank you.

When there is more than one, we use the scrap code for "other" then write
in the comments all the scrap reasons. All our scrap reports print the
operator comments in order to show this data. Stupid, I know, but it's the
only way we've figured out (that our operators are willing to do) so far.
This has always been a flaw IMHO. I've used Vantage for the past 10
years--two different companies--and attended several user group meetings in
the Twin Cities area, and this is a common issue at both of the companies
I've worked for and pretty much every company in the user group. And unless
I'm missing something, without custom programming, I only see two
options--punch in and out to record the data, or do it in the comments like
we do. Neither are good choices.

We are in search of a more efficient way of collecting labor. Currently our
operators use key board and mouse. Has anyone out there dealt with wireless
bar code scanning directly into Vantage?

Good Morning Everone.....
I have a question.....any thoughts you might have would be greatly
appreciated.
In my plant we have just started using data collection. We are
having 3 departments clocking into Vatnage. I have had some
complaints about the fact that some of the employees say they don't
know if they have clocked in successfully. Have any of you
experienced this problem and if so how did you resolve it/ My
thought was to have a splash screen come up when they hit the
login/logout button to return to the main screen come up and say "You
have successfuly clocked in" ... or soemthing along those lines.
What do you think? Is this doable? Should I contact Custom
programming for this?
thanks for any feed back!

Cheryl:
Although I can appreciate making it easier on the user, why waste the money
on Custom Programming?!
If they really want to know if they clocked in or not, why not just have
them put their number in again and
'see' if their detail shows up? If it doesn't, then they are in the right
screen to actually clock in.
Another thing to do is in the list of names, they can click on the first
letter of the name (for instance 'M' for Mike)
and just keep hitting the letter until they come to their name.
If I am not making any sense, let me know and I can elaborate more.
Sorry, I just hate wasting money on something that is just too easy.

Cheryl,
Manasa is referring to the office data collection screen (or previous to
V6).
Her idea of having the employee punch in there numbers again is valid.
If they are using a scan card of some form to make it easy it might help is
to put in employee photos and associate them to the numbers. That way if
they see their picture, they did it right.
Good luck,

If they really want to know if they clocked in or not, why not just have

'see' if their detail shows up? If it doesn't, then they are in the right

Another thing to do is in the list of names, they can click on the first

Cheryl,
Manasa is referring to the office data collection screen (or previous to
V6).
Her idea of having the employee punch in there numbers again is valid.
If they are using a scan card of some form to make it easy it might help is
to put in employee photos and associate them to the numbers. That way if
they see their picture, they did it right.
Good luck,

Just like Aaron reminded me, take a picture of everyone and associate it to
what they clock in with (if you use their last 4 digits of their SS#, for
instance). Then all they would have to do is type their number in again and
see their picture. It will work on 5.1. It worked back on 4.0.
If you need more help, just give me a call if you want.

Although I can appreciate making it easier on the user, why waste the
money
on Custom Programming?!
If they really want to know if they clocked in or not, why not just have
them put their number in again and
'see' if their detail shows up? If it doesn't, then they are in the
right
screen to actually clock in.

No problem, just so you know, in your vantage directory (where the db folder
is located) there is another folder called EMPPHOTO. If you go with the
pictures, put them in that folder. Just name each folder with the number or
whatever they use to clock in with. That way their picture comes up when
they clock in.
Again, if you need more info, feel free to call.

When an operator ends an activity, what are the proper numbers to fill
in the "Current," "Scrap," and "Non-Conform" fields.
I am confused at what "Current" means.
If I made 10 parts and 2 of which I think are bad, would I put:
10 in the Current and 2 in the Non-Conform
-or-
8 in the Current and 2 in the Non-Conform.
Its the wording that gets me.
Thanks,
Ben

You would put 8 in current (what you currently made that is good).
2 in Scrap or NonConform depending on what your procedures are.
We usually would put 2 in scrap (these would go into the Inspection Pending
area).

We are looking at deploying data collection on our shop floor. It will most likely be utilizing a wireless connection so we will have to use terminal server to access the data collection module.
Does anybody have any suggestions on any touch panel computers that run windows 2000 or XP? I want the computer and touch screen to be integrated encased in an industrial protective cover.
Also, is it possible to only have the data collection screen visible on the monitor so that the operator does not see any other part of vantage?
Thanks,
Jasper

The answer to your last question is yes...and you can even set it up to
where if the computer goes down, for whatever reason, and needs to be
rebooted, it can automatically log you on the network and onto data
collection (Plant Floor). We had to dummy proof over here from the
every beginning. Of course you need Terminal Server to do this.

We have been using ELO Touch Screens for our data collection and they work very well. They are extremely durable and only require a quick wipe down every month or two just to clean them of oil/coolant mist and excessive fingerprints. The 15" model provides plenty of viewing space.
