Look on the progress website to run some utilities. Vantage tech support

Wild guess but are the Progress services both running on the server (assuming this is Progress DB)?

2nd thought....I think I've seen something similar when trying to manually start DB too soon after services have just been started (as in after a reboot). Trying again 2-3 minutes later worked OK.

Jim,

I had similar problems with the re-start of the database that I can
reproduce both in 5.1 and 6.1. If you have Promon running and you stop the
database with Progress Explorer (the MMC console) or you stop and start the
database immediately, the stop procedure fails to close a file that
indicates the database is still running (vantage.lk in 5.1 or mfgsys.lk in
6.1). If you have this file shown in the database directory AND your
database is not running in MMC, you would need to delete this file and the
database will start without a problem. This file is generated when the
database starts. Also, check your log to see additional information on the
shutting down/start up procedure for errors.

You could also refer this issue to support for additional information.

SYMPTOMS:

* Many database servers running
* Port numbers used for the DB brokers are "close" to each other,


PROBLEM RESOLUTION:

==> The problem can be due to "Port defined for the broker is already in use".

Be sure you set the "Maximum dynamic port" and "Minimum dynamic port" Ports" within the ServerGroup Configuration in Progress Explorer, or use the corresponding startup parameters -minport and -maxport, so that the DB Broker ports are not conflicting with the ports dynamically allocated for communication between a server and its clients.

Minport and Maxport parameters are valid only for the Remote Servers (_mprosrv processes). If you are running the Admin Server, then there is a port used for the communication between the admin sever and each database broker.
Should you have secondary brokers and/or OIB plus OID (for Open Interface Broker and Driver), then you would have additional ports used.

I want to thank those that emailed about the situation and also extra thanks
to the guy who actually called to make sure things were OK.. Thanks Norm.

As it turns out I got data corruption as well, to not only did I have to
delete that .lk file, I had to restore from backup. Another lesson learned
from day to day use.
