I may run into this situation soon and was thinking that I would create
a bin for each rev. Old bin number for old rev, newer bin(s) for newer
part rev(s).

i was asked today about keeping inventory seperated by rev level, without
necessarily creating a new part record for each rev. in other words, we may
stock rev a and as rev b comes into production, we may want to know how many
rev a remain in stock. anyone else deal with this? a new part number get

I would be interested in ideas for this also.

James,
If you had a rev roll why would you want to keep the old parts? We pull the
old parts from stock and determine if they can and need to be reworked to
the new revision. If they cannot be reworked, they are scrapped and removed
from the system.

I can't speak for James, but sometimes, customers order parts to the old
rev. Repairing an old, existing machine, or replacing a part in the field.

good point, but in some cases we may have a few of old rev 'a' depleting as
rev 'b' goes to production and begins to receive to stock. we may also keep
a very few old rev's on hand as replacement parts or whatever. james

Have you considered using "Lot Control"?
Lot control is a very effective way of separating the same part
number into individual amounts. By turning on lot controls however
you will be required to assign a lot number to the part and every
time the part is moved you will need to put in the bin number and the
lot number.
I strongly recommend reading about it in help. I am a big fan of lot
control. If done correctly you will love it as well.
Call me if you have further questions.

We use Lot Control to link our materials in stock back to the Purchase
Order No. for quality control purposes.
The traceability is great.
You will need to create a new stock report to show the breakdown of
stock across the Lots.

We have this situation also. We choose not to scrap the old rev because we
may be able to use them for other parts. What we do is when we receive the
parts to inventory we enter the rev level and our batch# into the reference
field. Our planner uses the history transaction screen when looking for
inventory. We also enter that information when issuing parts to jobs, so
you could write a report that gives you what's left in inventory and what
rev level it is. You must make sure that the information being entered in
the reference field is always put in the same way. It may sound confusing
but it has worked for us so far. As a back up we have inventory tickets
that are written up when parts are physically put into inventory. Therefore
if there is any questions you could go to that bin and check the ticket.

I would suggest that you change part numbers. We tried to keep rev a and
rev b and rev c. It was horrible.
