Subject: Soliciting Comments on Job Setup

We are having a philosophical discussion regarding Job Setups and Bills.
Conditions: 1 or 2 level bills are the norm, 3 to 4 job operations are
the
norm, Version 5.0

Side A:
Says that a part number needs to be created for each job step so that
WIP
amounts processed can be tracked. IE; as part abc1 moves to operation 2
it
becomes part abc2, as it moves to operation 3 it becomes part ABC3 and
so
on. This will necessitate the creation of a part number in the part
master
for each process step, so that materials management will know how much
material is in each step.

Side B:
Says that creating part numbers for each process step is unnecessary
because
Vantage will know through WIP reports how much is in each process step.
Creating additional part numbers will only complicate the process.

Which side is the most appropriate? What is the best way to determine
how
much material is sitting at each process step? What are the
ramifications
of creating part numbers for each process step?

Thanks

Is there an easy way to find the difference between the Production
Detail Report for a specific job and the Inventory/WIP Account
reconciliation for the same job? Mine is off and Vantage posted the
amount on the Production detail report as a credit when I closed the
job. This posting has created the WIP-Material GL off.

Thanks for any help.

If you are on version 6.1 you can run an inventory wip reconciliation
report by job, otherwise, you will have to have to run the entire report
for the period of time the job was open & look for the entries that
apply. Most likely the differences will be in a variance account you
designated in your account set-up.

I have complied many crystal reports and my users are able to run them

Hi Shirley,
I'm pretty sure Side B is the way to go. the other thing is that each
material on the jobs can be directly assigned to a specific operation.
in
that way you can be sure exactly what is being used and at which point
in
the overall process.
I think side A would drive you all crazy. It's a lot of extra work,
and my
opinion would be that it would all be needless. Vantage does the work
already.

Has anyone found a good reliable registry cleaner? Anyone gotten bitten

You know, Shirley, you could always give him a test database

Then show how your reasoning makes more sense.

I've done this enough times in the past to show Management
the error of their ways.

There are 2 different utilities we use depending on the type of hung
session. There's PROMON and also the SYSUSR52.R utility (this is the
name
for 5.2 which we are still on). For the sysusr program, you have to
call
support to get it and it comes with instructions. For promon, you need
to
first set this up on your server, then option 8 to kill a session. I
believe the instructions for setting up promon are part of the Vantage
install guides - if not I know I've found them in the past by searching
the
vantage answerbook. You can also end user sessions directly from
Vantage on
the server only through "System Management" -> "Utilities" -> "Connected
User" -> "Disconnect"...

These are either in the Vantage instructions when you first
loaded Vantage on your server, or in the mfgbkup.txt file
located in the mfgsys61 directory (towards the bottom).
Just don't remember which one.

I remember it being incredible easy to setup (just pointing
the file to the right path).

Subject: RE: Re: Soliciting Comments on Job Setup

Shirley,

If it would help, I'm sure that our material manager would discuss this
with
him. He has seven years of Vantage.

My comment (with almost 10 years of Vantage experience, two
implementations
of Vantage and 15 years of other software support under my belt) is this
(And I know you all know this already):

The purpose of the job is to show a roadmap of how to create a top
assembly
part. During the manufacturing process, many materials and detail parts
may
have to be bought/manufactured to create that top assembly. As someone
else
said, Vantage keeps complete track of where you are on every job, which
materials and details are required, which have already been issued, how
much
longer it will take to complete and ship. Changing the part number on
every
operation is just going to muddy the water. If you are building a tuna
sandwich (one of my favorite examples), it takes bread, tuna, relish,
mayo,
onion, garlic, tomato and lettuce. If you slice the tomato, it is still
a
tomato, and still a component of the sandwich.

There are exceptions--for example if raw material is sent out for braze
prior to being put on the mill, we bring it in with a different part
number,
since it has been altered. We do this because the material might sit
somewhere in a lot before being issued to a multitude of other jobs. In
the
sandwich example, bread with mayo is still going to be with the original
traveler, waiting for tuna and so on so we don't call it braymo, it just
moves with all the other parts to the assembly area.

Sorry, people who try to make a complex process complicated for their
own
agendas should seriously not be allowed to drive software.

Lydia

His idea is ludicrous. Management always has a problem hearing a woman
over a man - or at least, that has been "my" experience. You need to
take some time and prepare a statement, in writing. If that does not
work, just forget it and don't sulk. Your time will come and they will

Good luck.

Thanks for the responses.

Now, what is the syntax for my database name in Promon?
I've tried UNC and IP:port with no luck.
Are there instructions for this utility somewhere?

I'm stuck at the front door.
Please help.

There are 2 different utilities we use depending on the
type of hung
session. There's PROMON and also the SYSUSR52.R utility
(this is the name
for 5.2 which we are still on). For the sysusr program,
you have to call
support to get it and it comes with instructions. For
promon, you need to
first set this up on your server, then option 8 to kill a
session. I
believe the instructions for setting up promon are part of
the Vantage
install guides - if not I know I've found them in the past
by searching the
vantage answerbook. You can also end user sessions
directly from Vantage on
the server only through "System Management" ->
"Utilities" -> "Connected
User" -> "Disconnect"...

Side B is definitely the way to go.

Unless, the purpose is to complicate the process to such a degree that
no beneficial information can be gleaned, no one will understand
anything, so they will blame Vantage and start looking for a new ERP
system. If that's the desired end result. Then by all means go A!

One thing to consider would be to set up a test database with scenario A
and have them run through a typical part. After they see all the
transactions and parts that they will have to add they should be able to
figure out for themselves that option A is system suicide.

Good Luck!

Mike

Thanks

For purely WIP it would be relatively easy with RB (or Crystal) to watch
the costs at various levels. I guess my first question though on a
part numbering scheme would be whether the sub-assembly parts are ever
put into stock for later final assembly or if they would ever be sold as
repair/replacement parts. If neither of these situations apply then
there would be no need for seperate part numbers at all. The added
complexity would have no benefit.

Sarah is correct in that Vantage really isn't set up for this. In
essence
you would have a job for each operation.

Would not be fun...

If I were you I would ask him what specific information he is trying to
get
for each operation and then show him how easy it will be to get it
without
changing part# at each step. To be honest, I wouldn't even know how to
go
about doing that, I don't think Vantage is even set up for that. If you
show him that he can get what he needs without doing that extra work, he
should (hopefully) buy in.

Yes, I am trying to poll other uses. I have a new materials manager
that has limited my input in this area and has decided that after 6
months he knows Vantage better. Management does not seem to be hearing
me.
