Disable Menu Search in Data Collection

I have a request to turn off the Menu Search(waffle button) while in Data Collection / MES. I have seen posts about turning off Enterprise Search, and EDD, but not about the menu search. I believe the proper way to approach this would be to use menu security to control what shows up in the list, but I was curious if anyone knows of a way to disable it completely?

We just use menu security to basically block them from 99% of the system.

You need to edit the shellRestrictions section of launchmodes.jsonc file. These are all of the options I have found to hide everything.

“Home”,
“EnterpriseSearch”,
“Menu”,
“Recents”,
“Favorites”,
“Notes”,
“Monitor”,
“Add”,
“Reports”,
“Videos”

** NOTE This does not apply to Security Managers. They always see all options.

I went this route too and for the first time stumbled on what @amurdock shared here… interesting…

It is a wonder to me why simple things like this (general idea of controlling MES menus) haven’t been part of, and incorporated into, the vanilla program yet…Epicor is always on the defensive, not on the offensive, for users, especially with QOL updates (would love for them to take a look at just how much simple QOL updates could affect the positivity of their product, which is generally solid and good, but frustrating as heck)…

There are literally hundreds of rock-solid, simple ideas that haven’t been implemented that are years stale in their ideas forum, and we have just come to live with our band-aid solutions to them.

Forever thankful for this group.

It was wild when I realized all of a sudden after how many years of being on classic in 9 and 10 where this wasn’t possible (not sure about vantage) that all of a sudden they released this and allowed it. What idea or enhancement request did this get pushed through for? Or was it truly just “eh, we’ll let them figure it out”?

We ran into the MES issue with the sidebar 3 years ago while exploring Epicor Implementation. It has been 2 years since the launch (This month, actually). Our Plant Guys were not having it…

Most of the problems we found for us in the early process were already shared by someone else on these forums, or, if I posted, someone would jump in to help.

I do remember contacting support about this particular issue, but in the end our in-house developer and IT guru and I figured out how to hide these menus. We mostly made educated guesses about the names (to hide an icon in the file) because we didn’t see a formal list anywhere.

Now, we are at the point, thankfully, where we usually run and typically don’t turn in tickets unless something is truly broken (which presents its own frustration as we work through the basic tiers of support and escalation). But we know what we are in for, so we provide them with overkill information in the initial tickets; it helps.

When we decide it’s safe to update to a new version of Epicor (by reading through problems here and the update documentation), we’ve never had an update where something that worked before wasn’t working, especially with regard to our customizations - which we need to do what we do. We are used to that grind now. I’m not a developer, just heavy on operations and tech-savvy with regard to power using.

One of my hopes is that, by forcing users to upgrade to Kinetic, all of their support can be focused on less now, and we get quicker results for problems, enhancements, and updates.

Anyway, our MES screen is significantly modified, and it is exactly what our Plant Manager wants in terms of simplicity and functionality; the ability to do that is a LOVE I do have for Epicor.

Epicor Licensing…

I’m fairly certain if you don’t lock down security (or disable it as was shown above), then MES users who load into something not Data Collection then they consume a normal license.
