Document management

Sandy -

Save yourself the typing ! You don't need the http:// just enter the
website
www.urlthatyouwant.com

You also need to specify where the iexplore.exe is found on the pc when you
created the document association from the System Management menu. To make
things
simple, I put a copy of the program at the root of the C drive on each pc.
This
way I don't worry if XP is different from 2000 or 98. Each OS puts the file
in
a different directory - by putting a copy on the root of the C drive I
remove
that problem!

Here is my view command (character for character):
c:\iexplore.exe &1

If you use the iexplore.exe for xls, doc, txt, log, pdf, and com
(websites) - you
only have to reference 1 program for all document types. You still need to
set
up the association for each but that's easier than 6 different executables.

HTH,
Calvin

Shirley & Calvin,

I am missing something because I tried to get the .com to work and
nothing happens when I click view. I am setting up com in "Document
Association" with the path to iexplore.exe followed by &1. Then in a
test part number revision I am putting in
http://www.urlthatIwanttouse.com It associates to the com record but
nothing happens when I click view.

Thanks!

Does anybody know of a way to have files attached through document
management to automatically print with the traveler? We have laser / turret
punch setup sheets that we print each time we run a job. I am hoping there
is an alternative to Vantage custom programming.

What are some common uses for Document Management that some of you have found useful? We have had the module for two years. Haven't touched it. Wondering if I should.

Anyone care to give some input here?

Troy,
Document Management was key to our QS9000 certification. We have virtually
eliminated ALL paper files for our process cards. The only versions of our
process cards that exist are electronic. The supervisor prints out the
process cards as needed, at the end of a job these cards are discarded.
Only our Process Engineer, and the Document Manager (myself) can make
changes in those directories, (NT security). Our QS auditor said that it
was rare to have a document system that made it virtually impossible NOT to
have the most current version of process card.

Shirley,
Reading the HELP on Document Management, it says there is an icon available to click. So far, I have only found such an icon when editing Part Rev's. What other places in Vantage can access DM files? Where do the links show up that a user would click for your process cards?

Troy,
There are 3 places you can associate documents. Quotes (line items), Jobs
(line items), and Part Rev. What we've done is to create a templet sheet in
excel. Then we hyperlink all the pertinent process cards to this one sheet.
Then we use document management to link to the part. The supervisor can
then use part tracker for the part/job he is setting up and click on what
ever process card he needs. When first put in I staged a test, I had
someone give me and the supervisor the same part number at the same time to
see who could get all the process cards 1st. I was able to pull up and
print 5 associated process cards in less than 5 minutes. The supervisor was
still going through the paper file for his first card after 10 minutes.
There was no more resistance after that.
Personally I would like to see document links in EVERY Vantage
module. Its too useful a tool to be restricted to 3 areas.

Shirley, we did not buy the DM module because of the limited areas of
access. It is relatively easy to link to external documents from a VB form.
We have found this very useful to link items such as customer POs to sales
orders and spreadsheets to Vendor master files. Anywhere there is a VB form
you set up a link.
Just a thought ...

Been there, change the name of the VB Form button for each screen using a
translation and most (never say all) of the resistance fades.

I'm not that familiar with the DM module so I hesitate to say that using VB
Forms to link documents is a replacement for it. I'm sure there must be
other features. We use VB Forms simply to link documents such as Customer
POs to Sales Orders and spreadsheets to Vendor/Customer master files. Not
real sophisticated, but it is really nice when you are reviewing a Sales
Order in tracker to be able to view a copy of the actual customer PO.

If you are not familiar with language maintenance you probably should talk
to someone at Epicor to get detailed instructions. If not done right you
could get some unexpected results. That said, it is not real involved. You
create your own language (by copying your default one) and then you can do
on-line translations specific to a program or screen. Try it in your
training database to get the results you want first. The on-line help was
very useful. It explains how you need to edit your .vtg files and how to do
exports and imports of languages. I have only done a couple of simple
changes but they have been helpful. Change "VB Form" to "Kool Stuff" and,
for some reason, users are more willing to use it.
