Document Manager - Document Path

Pat - leave the space in folder ( or document ) name ... Just use quotes
around the name IN the path statement.

IE X:\folder\xxx\"names with spaces"\"documents about vantage.doc"

I found my problem, one of my file folders had a space in the name "Punch
Casings".
Thanks for the help.

256 characters in V 4.0 .... V 3.0 it was something like 60 or 80 characters
for the entire path name so in V3.0 you had to watch how deep your directory
structure went.

We have something like 600 customers and 10-15,000 items so we setup our
folders as:

\cst\a-f\custname\part-number\..... docs
\cst\g-l\custname\part-number\..... docs
\cst\m-q\custname\part-number\.... docs
\cst\r-z\custname\part-number\.... docs

You could also add \rev\ after part-number ( a,b,c etc ).

The idea was to make it easy to find all documents related to one item
easily with or without doc-mgmt.

Not that this idea makes much sense ... I just wasn't coming up with a
better idea at the time.

The one downside to this arrangement ... a folder for one item can contain
drawings, quotes ( word ), and/or inspection documents. That's 3 different
departments that need read-write access to the folder and hence to each
other's "Stuff" while the shop floor is read-only to everything. I'd love
to be able to set the access privileges by file extension but can't do it
under NT and setting up separate directory trees for each department seemed
very redundant just to protect "Turf".

Is their a limit to the length of the path to a file?
Has this been expanded on newer releases than Rio?
I think this was covered some time ago but I can't find any notes on it.

Patrick,

According to the Installation Guide for Vantage 4.0, it allows for
250 characters. Previous version only allowed for 60 characters. This
is just what the papers says, I haven't actually tested it yet.
