Document Managment - and extra tips

Gary,
A little known detail about Document Management (at least to
version 5) It does NOT support long file names, it supports DOS file name
format. This causes some issues with Microsoft products, BECAUSE, if you
have numerous Microsoft products installed the path in the Vantage Document
management GETS LOST. Here's a possible suggestion, Create a shortcut to
word or excel, with a short file name and drop it into the root like Calvin
suggested for IE Explorer.

We have just switched over to a citrix server and are experiencing a
significant slow-down (1-2 minutes) when people are logging in. Has
anyone else on Citrix experienced this? If so, can you share the
solution?

Ron,

My case is the opposite. Local people connect a lot slower than Citrix users
(50 to 70% more time to connect). The server might be the issue. Do you have
a dual processor and 100 mb of memory per user? How about the network
connection to the Vantage Server? All of these are significant while login
in.

Out of curiosity I tried something that worked. For those of you with
Document Management this may or may not be useful. Go into Document
Association maintenance and add in "COM" and "HTM" as a recognized file
extension. With "iexplore.exe &1" in the VIEW COMMAND. Then go to your
favorite test record and paste in your favorite URL. Click View and you're
taken to your page. Maybe useful if your customers have web pages, or if
you have an intranet website or a vendor site.. etc etc

According to our service provider, we are at 125mb. When the system is
running and no one is logging on, it is significantly faster than
before. Thanks for the input, I passed it along.

Shirley -

My bad! Should have shared this a while ago.

We put a copy of iexplore.exe on the root drive of every client pc (c:\)
We use iexplore in Document Management for 99.99% of all associated docs.
With the Voloview browser plug-in CAD files work great this way too.
iexplore can view: excel, word, graphics, pdfs, drawings, urls, text
files, and if it doesn't have a browser plug-in it defaults back to
the Micrsoft file type extensions default association and procedes.

Knock on wood, so far we only get smacked with errors where a user typed
the file name into vantage with a typo.

Another shortcut I'm using:

I use a logon script for a new pc setup. When we add or
rebuild a pc, I logon to the network with a logon script I maintain
to load the softwares in the correct order. ie., it loads:
MS Office
Voloview
Acrobat Reader
Kodak Image
Crystal Reports
Crystal Patch
Vantage Client Setup
ODBC registry script
Finally a delete routine to remove the unwanted entries from
Start/Programs

I can get a PC back on the floor in under 90 minutes! This also helped
getting
people ready for Vantage 8.

While I'm still comfy on the soap box......

While we were upgrading our pc's to get ready for 8.0 We upgraded all the
wkstns
to 1 GB RAM with a memory sale from Dell (of all places) and new 1000 mbps
network
cards. Each pc was under 150 bucks to upgrade. We also upgrade the network
switch
to 10/100/1000. While this was to help with upgrading to 8.0, the
performace on our
current version was a SHIVER ME TIMBERS and COLOR ME HAPPY. Vantage login
times
dropped from 15-30 seconds to under 5 seconds. Bring out the sadist in me
but Vantage
is accually running faster than our employees for once! I am anticipating a
meeting
with the Sparkling Springs water sales rep in a week or two complaining
about the
drop in usage!

So far the only krinkle in our 8.0 migration plan is that after talking with
our CAM,
then the a readiness review with the Regional Consulting Manager, now we
have to fill
out a survey document before they will ship us version 8. ARGGGGHHH Oh,
well, can't
complain too much - we'll enjoy the smooth sailing on our current version
while it
lasts.

OT - but I hope it helps...
Calvin

ps - Aren't ya glad I don't make too many Saturday morning posts to the
group!

Maybe useful if your customers have web pages, or if
you have an intranet website or a vendor site.. etc etc
