Drop Shipment

How does a drop shipment work in Vantage? Example -

SupplierA on PO 11482 can build this bracket for us for $45.00 if we supply
the hardware. If SupplierA supplies and builds it, the cost would be
$71.00. If I make a PO to the Hardware distributor and have them drop ship
it to Supplier A, and have SupplierA fax us a packing slip to be able to
received these items against a PO, how would it ever get out of inventory?

What I am trying to avoid is having us handle the material and have to ship
it to SupplierA.

Any ideas?

The hardware should be on the job as material and the build by SupplierA as
a subcontract operation. Nothing ever goes to inventory. The job is
relieved when the final part is shipped to the customer or received to
inventory as stock.

No need to handle the material.

Our practice is (100%) to buy to stock and build from stock. Is there a way
to do the aforementioned process via stock?

Troy, Couldn't you receive to stock, issue to a job, then
ship to the subcontractor as an operation all in one swoop?
Heck, you could even add a warehouse called drop-ship.

Matt

This would always require a job.

We have the exact same situation here. For years, before Vantage/Me, the
purchasing department would issue two PO's. One for material and one for
the work to be done. The problem is that you cannot reasonably track the
cost of the final product. The final cost is made up of two components,
material and service. This is no different than issuing steel and machining
it in-house to make a part. The job is the mechanism that is used to
accumulate costs from multiple sources and summarize them. By using the
job, your costs are accurate, linked and traceable, and you do not have
inventory issues. At the completion of the job just do a "Receipt from
Manufacturing" to put the final product into stock.
