Dump & Load Vantage Database

Generally it is just Vantage.

She is running a Thin Client (Wyse) to the Citrix Server. No other Thin
Client/Citrix users are experiencing this problem. I even swapped thin
clients (with a user that wasn't having problems). Thinking possibly there
was something wrong with the (brand new) thin client. No change. The
Citrix server is new, therefore there should be a memory problem (I wouldn't
think).

She also had problems locking up when she was using a PC.

I am totally at a loss on what to do. That's why I thought to try a Dump &
Load of our database (figure it couldn't hurt).

I thank everyone for their suggestions and input.

Gail

Does vantage lock up or does the whole computer lock up? Can she still move
the mouse around? Could it be a hardware issue? Have you checked out the
memory on the computer?

The odd thing with the user (mainly one heavy user) having problems locking
up is:

Originally she had problems locking up with her PC (10 15 plus time a day).
We had a number of old pc's we felt we needed to upgrade, thus we chose to
purchase a Citrix Server (versus replacing her pc). Because of her lock up
problems we set her (along with two other users) up with thin clients (Wyse)
accessing the Citrix Server (no other versions of Vantage ever installed).
The other two (fairly heavy users) don't have any problems locking up. We
also set three more workstations up as thin clients (no problems - improved
performance)

She continues to lock up 10 - 15 plus times a day. Vantage support
suggested her domain user may be corrupt. I set her up with a new domain
user. No improvement. I set her up with a new Vantage user - no
improvement.

We swapped ports on the switch she was connected to. We ran a new line to
her thin client. We moved her thin client to a new location. I swapped her
thin client with one of the others not having problems. Still locking up 10
- 15 times per day.

I am truly at a loss what to do. She is probably our heaviest user of
Vantage.

I thought possibly we may have corrupt files in our database (she may access
these files more frequently). Plus the database is 10 years old.
Therefore, I thought possibly a dump and load might help.

By the way, I personally do not have an IT background (no formal education,
etc.). I don't know how I ever got stuck with these computers/servers, etc.

Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Gail

Gail, we did the Dump & Load between 5.1 and 5.2 and did notice some
decrease in database size. The lock ups have been conquered for the most
part by beefing up the client pc's and removing all prior versions of
Progress. (wipe the client drive and re build) I'd do it, it was pretty

Has anyone performed the Dump & Load utility provided by Vantage?
What are the reasons for doing so? What were the results (i.e.
improved preformance, etc.)?

We have been on Vantage since 1994 or 1995. We are currently on
version 5.20 (looking to move to 6.0 in the very near future). Our
database is nearing 2 GB.

We have a couple of heavy user's experiencing inordinate number of
lock up's (booted out of Vantage, screen freezes, etc.) in Vantage at
various times. I have tried everthing from setting up new domain
users, Vantage user, new workstation, new thin client, relocating the
thin client (other thin clients perform fine), running a new line,
changing ports on the switch, etc. with no sucess.

We have never performed a dump and load. I realize there is no
guarantee the dump & load will enhance performance or eliminate the
user lock ups. But, I was interested what the group thought of
performing the dump & load utility.

Dumping and Loading will free up space consumed by delete records. Don't
plan on any performance improvements.

You should probably try a re-index / rebuild first. A dump / load would
not be a bad idea since you have never doen it in 10 years.

We've been doing it yearly since we started. Unless you purge records,
you'll have minimal reduction in database size but there are other benefits.
Vantage comes out of the box with a 4k block size; dump/load changes this to
8k -- better for larger databases. Unused blocks will be freed up and
indexes will be rebuilt. But remember that ODBC has to be reinstalled. If
you have custom tables, you'll need a different dump/load kit from Epicor
than the standard one.

Vantage has 5 purge routines for:

Indirect Labor
Journal Details
Change Log
General Ledger History

I think Matt may be on to something. I had a woman who constantly called me
because Vantage Kept locking up. It was because she was printing and before
the print confirmation screen came up she was clicking elsewhere, thus
hiding the ok button. It took forever to get thru to her but slowing down
and waiting for the ok button fixed the problem. She still has it
occasionally but she knows what the problem is now.

Yeah, we have that problem all the time with a couple people - they have
rapid click syndrome. A small confirmation windows gets hidden behind
the other windows on the desktop and the user thinks Vantage locked up.
You can tell if this is the problem when the rest of the OS and other
programs works fine, while Vantage appears to be the problem app. Just
ALT-TAB until the windows pops up.

Yeah, we have that problem all the time with a couple people - they have
rapid click disease. A small confirmation windows gets hidden behind
the other windows on the desktop and the user thinks Vantage locked up.
You can tell if this is the problem when the rest of the OS and other
programs works fine, while Vantage appears to be the problem app. Just
ALT-TAB until the windows pops up.

I think Matt may be on to something. I had a woman who constantly
called me because Vantage Kept locking up. It was because she was
printing and before the print confirmation screen came up she was
clicking elsewhere, thus hiding the ok button. It took forever to get
thru to her but slowing down and waiting for the ok button fixed the
problem. She still has it occasionally but she knows what the problem
is now.

The odd thing with the user (mainly one heavy user) having problems

Originally she had problems locking up with her PC (10 15 plus time a
day).
We had a number of old pc's we felt we needed to upgrade, thus we
chose to
purchase a Citrix Server (versus replacing her pc). Because of her
lock up
problems we set her (along with two other users) up with thin clients

installed).
The other two (fairly heavy users) don't have any problems locking up.
We
also set three more workstations up as thin clients (no problems -

She continues to lock up 10 - 15 plus times a day. Vantage support
suggested her domain user may be corrupt. I set her up with a new
domain
user. No improvement. I set her up with a new Vantage user - no
improvement.

We swapped ports on the switch she was connected to. We ran a new
line to
her thin client. We moved her thin client to a new location. I
swapped her
thin client with one of the others not having problems. Still locking
up 10
- 15 times per day.

I am truly at a loss what to do. She is probably our heaviest user of
Vantage.

I thought possibly we may have corrupt files in our database (she may
access
these files more frequently). Plus the database is 10 years old.
Therefore, I thought possibly a dump and load might help.

By the way, I personally do not have an IT background (no formal
education,
etc.). I don't know how I ever got stuck with these
computers/servers, etc.

Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

In part, I know this is definitely part of the problem. I did watch her
(and have seen her in the past). She is very quick on the key board and she
does a lot of unnecessary mouse clicking (more so when she doesn't know I'm
intentionally watching -slows down when I was standing behind to watch).
Plus she gets a bit impatient. Too quick to presume she's locked up, and
does a ctl, alt, del. I have asked her to try to slow down a bit.

But in her defense, she did lock up when she wasn't fast clicking/keying.
She was just changing screens. I have seen this on a couple of occasions.

On the other hand: Other than freeing up or decreasing database size, is
there any other reason/benefit by performing the dump & load (again,
remember I'm not an IT person, therefore I don't necessarily comprehend the
benefit of reducing the database - we have a new server, lots of space).

Someone had mentioned trying a re-index/rebuild first. I would have thought
it would be part of the dump & load. Is this a utility I would get from

Are these 'lock-ups" consistently in the same program? I do know (at least on 5.1) that there are certain screens with bad indexes that take forever to display. One is customer shipment tracker another is in AP invoice entry when displaying the invoices in a group. Both can take three-four minutes to display.

Does vantage lock up or does the whole computer lock up? Can she still move the mouse around? Could it be a hardware issue? Have you checked out the memory on the computer?

Subject: RE: [Vantage] Dump & Load Vantage Database

The lock ups have been conquered for the most
part by beefing up the client pc's and removing all prior versions of
Progress. (wipe the client drive and re build) I'd do it, it was pretty
painless.
