Editing Progress data via ODBC - Which CRM?

We are using an Open Source CRM called vtigerCRM (www.vtiger.com) which
is based off of SugarCRM

Yes, I remember the vague warnings for Vantage support to not do this,
but I can't see a reason not as long as the fields are populated with
valid data.
I do this all the time with a MySql database running our CRM without
issue.

Has anyone successfully edited the date in the Progress database using a
3rd party tool via ODBC or using standard SQL statements? If so what
tool did you use? I need to do some cleanup on the database and I would
prefer to access the data in a spreadsheet format rather than running a
Crystal report to find the problems and manually update them.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

I have done some edits using MS Access, but only to VB form fields on 5.2.
I'm too afraid to hit any other fields for fear of 'corrupting the
database...'

If you are on maintenance then kiss whatever value the support portion is to you goodbye. If you corrupt something by missing some DB trigger that would have changed data elsewhere you will no longer be supported. First and foremost any field used in any index would be completely off-limits. And even description type fields are often the basis for an index. There are ways to look inside the DB schema and identify some of the pitfalls but you really have to know what you are doing then test, test and more test in a test database.

I just had a meeting with our president and had to explain over and over why I can't use Access to simply import BOMs into Vantage to avoid re-keying. Then to explian why even hiring outside help to use Progress to move the info into Vantage was a bad idea (unless done and blessed by Custom Programming).

If I had an enhancement request it would definitely be for more data pruning type DB utulity routines.

I think there are certain fields that have 'triggers' associated with them
in Vantage so that when they are edited, they change other things in the
system. If you edit the data through ODBC, these do not get fired off...

You can use access, or SQL commander, but bear in mind that is you do
this you will by circumventing the application logic. If you have a
clear definition of the table relationships you may be able to pull it
off without consequence. If this is something you feel needs to be done,
then I would suggest that you have everyone log out of the system and
create an export dump of the DB before proceeding.

Also keep in mind that most of the time when an edit is done at the
table level the worst that usually happens is that orphans are created
which corrupts the data in terms of output until you can go in and clean
up the orphans. Very rarely would such an action cause the database to
come to a screeching halt.

Just make sure you backup and the verify data integrity before opening
up the application to the public. If you have a test or training DB to
try this on first, that would be the best path to follow.

Thanks for the good info folks. I understand the implication of the DB
triggers and I'm not trying to do any importing or complex manipulation;
I just want to edit data that is already existing in the table. In my
case I am trying to cleanup the Part Class in the Part Master. I'll try
this on a test database using ODBC from Access.
