Electronic Travelers in Vantage

If I had a dime for every time I've heard "I've been told........."

I'd have enough money to waste circling the earth in a coffin like that
Cirque du Soleil guy recently!

I've been told that out of the box you can launch UD forms from
MES....of course..I've been 'told' things before LOL!

I suspect this is more of a 'policy limitation' than a technical one. I
would be worried that this might get broken in an upgrade at some point.
Does this work in E9?

Are you kidding me??!! Is it that retardedly simple? Im not a
programmer by any means..I even offered to pay the programming group at
Epicor to let me launch a UD table from MES and they said it was
impossible...my opinion of them has sunk to an even lower level than
before...if it were imaginatively possible at that..

Make a copy of the DLL on the client & server & rename it like so:
Epicor.Mfg.UI.HHUD01Entry.dll
instead of Epicor.Mfg.UI.UD01Entry.dll

Create your subprocess as a non Menu Item & for the program put in.
Epicor.Mfg.UI.HHUD01Entry.dll

Then create a Process Calling
Called Process Reference: Epicor.Mfg UI.HHUD01Entry
Called From: Epicor.Mfg.Menu.Mes

select the Menu ID created in subprocess.

Create you button & then on the click event

ProcessCaller.LaunchForm(oTrans,"Epicor.Mfg.UI.HHUD01Entry")
------------------

They don't even have to put an employee ID in after putting in Vantage
credentials. Unless of course you want to launch it from another form
like ReportQuantity.

For one of our business units the manufacturing process is quite
complex, and often units require one or more round of rework before they
complete their assembly. A typical unit will go through a number of
assembly steps, go into Test, and come out of Test with one or more
rework tasks before returning to Test and moving on.

Vantage's material movement model is essentially One-Way, and moving
"backwards" is definitely an exception in its approach, while for us it
is a fact of life.

Currently we manage this process with a paper traveler document that
tracks all of the steps, who did what when, any issues or comments, and
only after several real-world steps do we do a material movement in
Vantage to reflect a critical milestone in the unit's lifecycle. When
rework happens a 'Rework Traveler' is stapled to the front, etc. etc.
Its hardly a graceful process, and collecting the data points (i.e.
measurements, lot numbers for subcomponents, etc.) that are generated
along the way is a manual and cumbersome task.

So I'm thinking about the best way to address this. While building a
data collection system to automate part of this process would be fairly
straightforward, I think our goal will be to eliminate the paper-based
traveler altogether, which raises some ugly questions about having *two*
systems to track WIP, or coming up with graceful ways of integrating
additional visibility and process tracking into Vantage's existing
process. I know I can leverage the UD tables to store the data I would
need to store, but I'm still trying to get my head around exactly what
problem we're trying to solve and how our requirements match with what
Vantage can do in this respect.

I'm hoping other folks have encountered similar issues and have some
wisdom or scars to share. :-)

Brian,

It sounds like youre describing two separate issues, process data
tracking, and WIP tracking. I feel your pain with WIP tracking in that
it really doesn't account for having to go either backwards or an
alternate path so to speak. We've pondered both issues. As it stands
the pot holes for process tracking were simply access. How can we get
the folks in operations access to the places we have available to store
that information? The places we see as available are the UD tables as
Vantage doesn't directly offer capability for tracking process data
(perhaps it exists in IQS). However the most convenient means for them
to access Vantage is through the MES system, and in Ver803 it does not
allow you access to those tables..sigh..

We are developing a VB form to call from a process launch button to
store this data in the UD tables that exist in Vantage (we have SQL
database and the console application will look directly to the UD tables
in Vantage). Ok, that part is complete.

Because we so often do rework ourselves for the simple reason of you
never do it right unless you do it twice, we run into the same issue as
you for WIP tracking. When we create a rework job we always prefix the
job number with RWK concatenated with the original job number followed
by and incremental number suffix preceeded by a dash (RWK025876-1,
RWK025876-2, etc.). We were thinking that a BPM fired workflow could
pick up on labor transactions completing operations for jobs beginning
with the prefix 'RWK' and subsequently adding a new WIP location, move
suggestion, and deleting the current location of that part (if
necessary). This of course has yet to be further investigated so I can
vouch for any of its validity at this point.

Whether or not it helps you out, just don't feel so alone out there in
the vast emptiness of Vantage space.

Thanks Rob for the thoughtful response. We may make that our new motto -- "You never do it right unless you do it twice!".

We're doing assembly of components that are very difficult to manufacture, and we're probably hitting some practical limits on what's possible for human operators to do, but being able to add robotics to our process is a ways off in terms of the cost curve). The best operator can follow the assembly procedures to the letter and still not get it right the first time. We're doing better constantly and maturing quickly, but it is still a challenge.

We had the expectation based on our pre-sales investigations that we could use MES to drive all of our WIP tracking, but our one-piece-flow (a job of 25 units, but we move each one through the floor separately), combined with the forward-only approach of Vantage's process model, plus the lack of any obvious method of associating a measurement to capture at a given step makes this both cumbersome and probably unworkable directly in Vantage. But I don't know what I don't know and hoping someone here knows the magic words. :-)

Yes, indirectly you can access a UD table by updating a field, or even,
creating a new record. However, if you want to launch a UD table as a
form, in ver 8... its my exp you cannot do this.

Make a copy of the DLL on the client & server & rename it like so:
Epicor.Mfg.UI.HHUD01Entry.dll
instead of Epicor.Mfg.UI.UD01Entry.dll

Create your subprocess as a non Menu Item & for the program put in.
Epicor.Mfg.UI.HHUD01Entry.dll

Then create a Process Calling
Called Process Reference: Epicor.Mfg UI.HHUD01Entry
Called From: Epicor.Mfg.Menu.Mes

select the Menu ID created in subprocess.

Create you button & then on the click event

ProcessCaller.LaunchForm(oTrans,"Epicor.Mfg.UI.HHUD01Entry")
------------------

They don't even have to put an employee ID in after putting in Vantage credentials. Unless of course you want to launch it from another form like ReportQuantity.

I suspect this is more of a 'policy limitation' than a technical one. I would be worried that this might get broken in an upgrade at some point. Does this work in E9?
