Employee ID Barcodes

Brian,
We are doing this, but we don't have 600 employees. For our situation I
created a separate barcode for in and out (front with picture and back
without). As time has gone on, the employees prefer the third barcode I put
on the card (sideways) that just contains the ID and an enter. They pop
that in front of the scanner (proximity activities laser scanner) and then
tap the touch screen related to their activity...clock in takes a swipe and
two touches, clock out is a swipe and one touch of the screen.
The combination of the two technologies has really made things quick and
easy for the shopfloor interface here.
Good luck,
Aaron Hoyt

that way all the employee would have to do is swipe in and out. The touch
screens would be to costly and be a bottleneck at clocking in/out time. As

doesn't have a better interface for this.......

Has anyone else done anything like this.

Tanya,
It has been my experience (third company with Vantage and third data
collection implementation, second with touch screens from EloTouch) that
touch screens pay for themselves quickly.
On the other hand, I have made all our badges with a label software like
Wasp Labeler, NiceLabel, Bartender and printed them on plain paper. Fold in
half for front and back and laminate with laminating cards (creditcard size)
from McMaster. This has proved cheap and effective. I can add in the
employee photo, Company logo, quality statement (handy for ISO audits) and
other material as needed. You can use code 39 (3 of 9), but I recommend for
badges you use code 128. It's more compact and reliable for reading. You
do need to be careful to make your paper badge small enough so you can punch
a hole for the clip and not get the paper or they will be susceptible to
water damage.
As for outside vendors, I had users at one time that had to have bar-coded
ESD cards. It was a number encoded, so we chose to make that number their
employee number. I set the scanner to scan and send an enter at the end of
each scan and the existing cards worked just fine.
If you would like additional recommendations or assistance, feel free to
contact me off list.
Good luck,

Hi Group,

We're on 6.1. I need some help trying to get employee ID's cards. The
ones I handmade (from Vantage) are pretty cheesy and after lamination
don't really hold up. Do any of you provide employee ID cards for
barcode swiping for Data Collection? Our consultant recommended that we
provide touch screen monitors and bar code swipers (read: expensive). I
am learning the hard way that consultants are not our friends. Our
challenge is trying to find a company who can make our employee cards
(we're less than 50 people, and I don't want to invest more money and
time in a system to make our own). We found 2 companies and both of
their proofs would not read in our barcode swipers, yet they claim their
"Code 3 of 9" barcode font works well for others. Is this a Vantage
issue? Would any of you be willing to email me (offline if necessary)
any 3rd party providers you have used?

Thanks in advance.

Tanya,

"I am learning the hard way that consultants are not our friends. "

:)

There are good consultants out there . don't give up hope.

In the meantime, check out www.system3x.com <http://www.system3x.com/>
search for -barcode scanner- They also have a great catalog. Yes, it shows
as a System 3x/4xx site for IBM System 36/38 + AS/400 equipment but they
also carry a wide selection of bar code scanners and zebra printers.
Excellent sales and service.

The problem might be your bar code scanner .

Thanks, Todd.

Would you or any others be willing to send me some names off-line? We
have spent the equivalent of 1 FT overworked underpaid IT person, with
much less to show for it. :-) For instance, we just purchased the VBI
module due to what we saw at Perspectives, and we can't seem to get a
consultant good or bad. It may be specialized knowledge. But it sure
would be great to have options.

"The problem might be your bar code scanner. "

It reads the Crystal Report Employee labels fine.

We're on 50 employees too and decided not to go to employee ID
cards. Reasons being:
1. We have a simple 4 character Employee ID code. Guys with
fingers 3 keys wide who have never used a keyboard got the hang of
clocking on within a week.
2. It is easy to get lost in the plant floor screens. If you
don't click and swipe in the right sequence it can get confusing for
novices. You have to take the time to give them the "advanced" Plant
Floor course.
3. ID cards don't really provide any security. Any time keeping
system is open to rorting and you need to be just as vigilant as you
do with bundy cards.
4. The ongoing task of generating cards for new employees would
be a pain. You will probably finish up having to do it yourself.

Our only barcode we have is the Job – Assy - Seq string as this can
get long & complicated. Our operators will now actually try and
locate the job traveller rather than keying; an unforseen quality
system benefit.

We looked at touch screens but decided that the price was not worth
it. We already had plenty of legacy displays. After dealing with
people trying to use a mouse for the first time during training
sessions I could see that touch screens would definitely be an
advantage particularly in the light of staff turnover.

We are on version 5 and purchased a 3rd party custom program from a vendor
that no longer supplies Vantage compatible products ( I heard mention that
bones were burned, the ashes packed in salt and garlic, the crypt was sealed
with lead and surrounded by brick dust, wolf bane and locked with a silver
key ). The program works great, with business card sized laminated cards,
we also use POS laser scanner ($375.00 ), (this works better than a "SWIPE"
unit). We turn over about 300% annually, (really) and we can pop out
laminated cards faster than the bargaining unit can loose them. This from a
modified Crystal Emp Badge report. The problem with it is it works good, so
good to replace would take about $5500.00 of custom programming. You will
HAVE to go custom, whether in house or 3rd party or Epicor. At one time we
tried to group some folks together with that goal in mind to share 3rd part
costs. There weren't enough to do so and my management became indifferent
to the project.

The short of this is: to go there you need a competent 3rd
party, 8 or 9 weeks of time, and about 6k for software/hardware.
