Enhancing printing reports in 8.03.404A?

Tony,

You have a far better understanding of this stuff than I do. My HP'S
are using Jet Direct. They moved over from my old NT server that had a
Jet Direct printer management utility. When I moved them to the 2003
box a few years ago I could not find the HP utility for the OS any
longer. I upgraded the drivers for the new OS and installed the
printers using TCP ports and assigned static IP's.

I have been logging on remotely to the server to change the printer
configurations. My Laserjet 8100 & 5000 each have 5 drawers, I have not
found the "not available option" using the HP universal PCL 6 driver.

I am currently running SBS2003. I have not really played much with
active directory & GPO's, I will look into that

My background is in sheet metal fabrication. I came from programming
our turrets & laser to this mess, building 2D wire frames was a whole
lot easier. The support offered by this group has been invaluable.

Thanks for your help.

Have a good weekend!

Dan

I had trouble with the PCL 6 driver way back when, and used the older
PCL 5 driver for a while.
About maybe a year or so ago, I switched to a PCL 6 driver and didn't
have that problem. But that might have been due to a new OS (Windows
2003) too, not certain.

I do know that sometimes I had to delete the port I made and then remake
it. Are your HPs with built in NIC or using JetDirect?
I had infrequent trouble with 3-port JetDirects, having to reset them on
occasion (2,3 times in 7 years)

You don't specifically mention it, but change all properties while at
the actual server. Right click the printer and do Printer Preferences.
Probably you are doing that, but just to be sure.
Also, at the server, set to "Not Available" any trays that you don't
want to use.
So if your "quote" printer uses Tray 3, disable the others. This
shouldn't be necessary, but will work with some printers when other
method won't work

Now once you've made the changes at the server, delete the printer on
the client and reinstall.
I see inconsistency in clients getting Printer Pref. changes done at the
server.
Partly why I had the logon / group policy remove the printers and
reinstall with next logon any time I made printer changes.

As an IT admin, I had a love/hate relationship with printers and
drivers. I'm so very glad to be strictly ERP now!
Hope any of this helps.

Hello Tony,

I appreciate your input, this should be one of those quick fixes that I
have spent way too much time on that is driving me crazier. I tired your
approach first before I posted my question originally, as that was the
approach I used before upgrading to 8.03.404a. I cannot get the print
driver to retain my custom settings it keeps defaulting back to the HP
default values. I found a posting on an HP forum about the problem
possibly being caused by PCL 6 driver. Are you using a PCL or PS print
driver?

Thanks,

Dan

Tony,

Opinions and suggestions are always welcome! Isn't that what this
Group is all about?

I think I'll give your idea a try. Our servers are in Europe and we
have US users who regularly have to set the printer preferences to
Letter size - we use Terminal Services. Maybe setting up their
printers directly on the server, instead of re-directing, might help.

Thanks,

Nigel.

I would like to automate the printing process i.e. when printing an
order acknowledgement it would automatically select the pre-printed
paper for the paper source, or travelers would select card stock.

Is it possible to embed printer & paper tray info into a Crystal Report?
Would I create a BAM using the auto-print function? Or a .p program? I
have no experience with 2 & 3. I am running an HP 8100N printer using
the HP Universal PCL 6 driver. It keeps defaulting to the factory
configuration, rather than the printer shortcut I defined to support
pre-printed paper. Ideally when I selected the print button it would
print directly rather than opening the printer selection dialog box,
force me to select a printer, and then change the print properties for
the paper source tray.

Nigel,

Did you try setting this up in the crystal report itself and then set
the printer settings?

This is how I got it to work in older versions of vantage through report
builder. Should work for crystal as well. Forget the command line part
if you haven't gone down this route.

I don't know if it's possible to force those settings like that in Crystal, but instead I get around this by setting up multiple "printers" on the server.
I put "printers" in quotes because while it's a single physical printer, say an HP 4100n, I can create printer shares that hold definitions as to what tray to print to, what watermark to have and so on. all of this predefined so user never has to open properties and pick any of that.
So, for example, the blank sales order forms are in tray 3, set up on the server as "orderform" and always print to tray 3. On the server I set up another printer to same port but share it as "quoteform" and always print to tray 2, and have a distinct watermark. Then tray 4 has blank white paper, and set up a third printer so normal print jobs go to the blank white.
In the Crystal Report, you then set up the Sales Order Ack. to print to the printer "orderform".

Hi Manasa,

The command line part is what tells Vantage to use the settings
stored in the Crystal report. From Epicor:

The /RPT switch instructs the Crystal runtime program to use/load the
modified Printer Settings as they were embedded or saved into the
report. If it cannot find a matching printer as defined when the
report was created, it will default to Clients default printer.

Basically, when you have the Crystal Reports Designer open and the
modified report up in the designer, print the modified report once,
selecting the desired printer you wish the report to always use. Save
the report.

Now when you launch Vantage with the /RPT switch on the icon line and
print that report, it will try to connect to the printer that was
saved with the report. So that printer MUST be added to any client
workstation if you want this report to use that specific printer. If
the printer is not defined on that client workstation, again the
system will use the default printer.

We've done all this, but still can't get it to work.

Nigel.

I understand how it is supposed to work, but then Vantage has promised
to do so many things and it doesn't or it's broken. Which was why I
made this remark. But if you did it without the command line and it
still did not work, then I have nothing else to offer. Sorry!

Hopefully, they will fix it for you soon!

Nigel,

I found this string in my mfgsys.exe file

<add name="FormLoad" value="0" />

I am guessing I replace the FormLoad with UNC path to the report and add
rpt after the /? Do you have anything outlining the changes?

Thanks,

Dan

Tony,

I tried your approach before posing my question. My changes made to the
unique printer keep getting replaced by the factory defaults. I tried
testing from within Vantage and also by printing a printer test page,
same result. I then upgrade the printer driver to the universal driver
as it was newer than my original driver same results. I will set the
unique printer up inside the report to see if that makes a difference.

Thanks,

Dan

Is it possible to embed printer & paper tray info into a Crystal Report?
Would I create a BAM using the auto-print function? Or a .p program? I
have no experience with 2 & 3. I am running an HP 8100N printer using
the HP Universal PCL 6 driver. It keeps defaulting to the factory
configuration, rather than the printer shortcut I defined to support
pre-printed paper. Ideally when I selected the print button it would
print directly rather than opening the printer selection dialog box,
force me to select a printer, and then change the print properties for
the paper source tray.

TIA

We tried to get Tray 2 of a Dell Laser Printer to print our checks. We
tried everything from Crystal to Vantage commands & nothing worked.

We handload tray 1 with checks when we need to print them and then put the
8 1/2 X 11 back in when done.

Vantage 8.03.404B SQL provides this feature.

Hi Dan,

click the icon, select properties and enter the following in "Target":

I have been down this very same road, pulled out the hair on my head over it.
I am not trying to push my opinion on others, but I bet $5 that if you look at doing it the way I suggested, you will be love it.
Doing each tray as a separate printer object on the server, then setting that printer as default in the crystal report itself will do just what you want to do without involving Vantage.
If you worry about the printers not being installed on the client, that is simple group policy matter, take 2 seconds at logon to assure that the client has the correct printer set up.
Any way, I'll stay out of this now, I promise. :-)

Nigel,

It did not work for me either. I called support to make sure I was not
missing anything. When printing a report it still defaults to the local
default printer, instead of the one defined in the Crystal Report.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks,

Nigel.

Nigel,
Perfect! I have also had to set up a tray with A4 paper to print our European customers' documents, and used the same method.
I was using all HP 4000 series lasers, and it's possible that the flexibility with the driver is limited to HP, but I don't think so.
If you need any help with it, let me know.
Tony

Are you using a PCL or PS print
driver?

Thanks,

Dan

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
I had trouble with the PCL 6 driver way back when, and used the older PCL 5 driver for a while.
About maybe a year or so ago, I switched to a PCL 6 driver and didn't have that problem. But that might have been due to a new OS (Windows 2003) too, not certain.

I do know that sometimes I had to delete the port I made and then remake it. Are your HPs with built in NIC or using JetDirect?
I had infrequent trouble with 3-port JetDirects, having to reset them on occasion (2,3 times in 7 years)

You don't specifically mention it, but change all properties while at the actual server. Right click the printer and do Printer Preferences. Probably you are doing that, but just to be sure.
Also, at the server, set to "Not Available" any trays that you don't want to use.
So if your "quote" printer uses Tray 3, disable the others. This shouldn't be necessary, but will work with some printers when other method won't work

Now once you've made the changes at the server, delete the printer on the client and reinstall.
I see inconsistency in clients getting Printer Pref. changes done at the server.
Partly why I had the logon / group policy remove the printers and reinstall with next logon any time I made printer changes.

As an IT admin, I had a love/hate relationship with printers and drivers.

Thanks,

Nigel.
