Tony,
You have a far better understanding of this stuff than I do. My HP'S
are using Jet Direct. They moved over from my old NT server that had a
Jet Direct printer management utility. When I moved them to the 2003
box a few years ago I could not find the HP utility for the OS any
longer. I upgraded the drivers for the new OS and installed the
printers using TCP ports and assigned static IP's.
I have been logging on remotely to the server to change the printer
configurations. My Laserjet 8100 & 5000 each have 5 drawers, I have not
found the "not available option" using the HP universal PCL 6 driver.
I am currently running SBS2003. I have not really played much with
active directory & GPO's, I will look into that
My background is in sheet metal fabrication. I came from programming
our turrets & laser to this mess, building 2D wire frames was a whole
lot easier. The support offered by this group has been invaluable.
Thanks for your help.
Have a good weekend!
Dan

I had trouble with the PCL 6 driver way back when, and used the older
PCL 5 driver for a while.
About maybe a year or so ago, I switched to a PCL 6 driver and didn't
have that problem. But that might have been due to a new OS (Windows
2003) too, not certain.
I do know that sometimes I had to delete the port I made and then remake
it. Are your HPs with built in NIC or using JetDirect?
I had infrequent trouble with 3-port JetDirects, having to reset them on
occasion (2,3 times in 7 years)
You don't specifically mention it, but change all properties while at
the actual server. Right click the printer and do Printer Preferences.
Probably you are doing that, but just to be sure.
Also, at the server, set to "Not Available" any trays that you don't
want to use.
So if your "quote" printer uses Tray 3, disable the others. This
shouldn't be necessary, but will work with some printers when other
method won't work
Now once you've made the changes at the server, delete the printer on
the client and reinstall.
I see inconsistency in clients getting Printer Pref. changes done at the
server.
Partly why I had the logon / group policy remove the printers and
reinstall with next logon any time I made printer changes.
As an IT admin, I had a love/hate relationship with printers and
drivers. I'm so very glad to be strictly ERP now!
Hope any of this helps.

Hello Tony,
I appreciate your input, this should be one of those quick fixes that I
have spent way too much time on that is driving me crazier. I tired your
approach first before I posted my question originally, as that was the
approach I used before upgrading to 8.03.404a. I cannot get the print
driver to retain my custom settings it keeps defaulting back to the HP
default values. I found a posting on an HP forum about the problem
possibly being caused by PCL 6 driver. Are you using a PCL or PS print
driver?
Thanks,
Dan

Tony,
Opinions and suggestions are always welcome! Isn't that what this
Group is all about?
I think I'll give your idea a try. Our servers are in Europe and we
have US users who regularly have to set the printer preferences to
Letter size - we use Terminal Services. Maybe setting up their
printers directly on the server, instead of re-directing, might help.
Thanks,
Nigel.
