Epicor 9.05.700C upgrade from Vista 8.03.409C

I just wanted to say thank you to everybody who has helped me on this thread... With your collective help I have been able to get my Database conversion process down from the long 5 days it was taking to a weekends time, which is what I needed. I am still testing things and working through issues like BPMs and such, but so far so good. Thanks again, you guys are awesome!

Thanks,
Bryan

Hello,

We are attempting a test pass and I just had a few questions. My questions are regarding the Schema Change and the mandatory database conversions processes that have to run when logging into the admin tools. With the Schema Change, according to the log, it appears to only have taken 20+ minutes. When I actually started it around 8 hours before the logs final time. As for the mandatory conversion programs, they are taking even longer. Some of the cv/cvg####.p programs it zips right through, others it will stay hung on for hours before it moves on. The prowin32.exe appears to be working so I do not want to interrupt it from fear of data corruption. I am just curious if any of these prolonged wait times are normal or if there is anything we can do to speed them up? Also, I have heard that it is possible to jump straight from Vista 8.03.409C to Epicor 9.05.700C. Is this possible? If so is there a special guide to do so? Any advice or help would greatly be appreciated.

Progress 32bit DB approximately 4gb.
TO speed things up run your admin tools from the same box as your server.
Other than that not much you can do , and yes it is normal for it to take
hours. If your DB is a good size.

Some are quick, some are slow.

Total time is really what you need to look at.

For an 8.03 to 9.05 conversion, assuming no problems, it generally takes
about 6-8 hours for all the schema changes and then another 10-12 for all
the conversions.

There is no way to go directly from 8.03 to 9.05, you will always need to do
an intermediary stop at 9.04, but with 9.05 you can install the update tool
which will allow you to not need a complete installation of OE10.1C and
E9.04 in order to do so.

Thanks for the speedy response Jose! I am currently running the admin tools from the same box, and I could see where that could cause an issue trying to do so over a network. This is my second attempt at the test pass, I acutally got it to work about a month ago, but it took like 5 days due to some missing UOMs and missing progress files in the cv directory. So I just need to be patient and let it finish its process? And as far as the "straight from 8.03.409C to 9.05.700", do you know if that is possible? Thanks again for you help!

I hope you are using the Upgrade Utility that is as straight as it gets. If
you are physically installing 9.04 then look into the Upgrade Utility that
will save you hours.

I am using the DUU that is located on my 9.05.700 disc. I am also using the latest instructions that Epicor has provided. I think I understand what they mean now about bypassing 9.04, they are talking about the server itself. I have not had to install 904, so maybe I am on the right track, just seems like a really slow train....
Thanks again for your help.

It can definitely be done in a weekend.

My turn around time for everyone I have done it for is usually somewhere in
the 18-24 hour range.

Start on a Friday, as early as your business shutdown will allow, then go
right into the conversion process, plan on working the overnight, and then
once that is done, importing all the updates for reports, customizations,
BPMs etc.

That is what we are seeing as well... we converted a 40gig DB and the whole processes from start to finish is in that 24-36 hour range... After that consider what it will take to re-import all your customization pieces as well...

Hey Jose,

Can you tell me how much of a difference doing the conversion with an SSD drive would make? Thats all I keep hearing is SSD.

Bryan,

I helped one of our sister companies upgrade from 8.03.305 to 9.05.700C this past summer/fall. The actual upgrade process started on Friday afternoon (around 3 I think) and was finished late Saturday afternon. We had the implementation team come in sunday morning to test their particular pieces (no problems found), and they were live Monday morning.

We had a smaller db (only 2G, also Progress), and virtually no customizations, but several ODBC reports that had to be re-written.

What had helped tremendously is that we'd done 4 test passes in the months before. If we hadn't done that I'd have no hair left.

SSD's have much higher IOPS than regular platter drives so your Data Reads
should be significantly faster. I couldn't say exactly how much faster. But
we've seen very significant improvements on our side when we switched.

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Our database was ~130GB when we converted - had to get to 8.03.409 first then on to 9.05.604 (first version of DUU). Timing over a weekend was very tight for us.

Couple of things that helped:
1. Throw all the hardware you can at it. We resisted for a long time but came to the realization that the conversion programs weren't going to get any more efficient - get the hardware to support. The tech team has a "white box" spec you could turn into a high-end user workstation if you like.

2. As you're doing your test, export all the customizations out once they are verified so you can just pull them in later. In addition, use the solution manager. It works well for several types of customizations - forms, UD menus, etc. and you can package a large cab file (we probably had a couple hundred pieces in our cab). As of 607 the solution manager did not work for field/process security, report data, report style, BAQ report, BPM, extended ud tables. Test several passes and make sure your CAB file imports what you expected. If you have a lot of custom BAQ reports it will take you a while to create these so importing the other customizations that you can in 1 cab file will help.

3. Plan on having someone watch the entire conversion. We worked in shifts, with me as the primary being here whenever important steps were taken (e.g. finishing 1 piece and getting backups). There are prompts that come up in the process that just need you to click OK -- do not rely on putting a phonebook on the enter key as a workaround (yes, that was suggested to us). Keep timing logs on your process. There are log files you can check while the conversions are running to see if you're on track (delta-df.log, conversion.log)

4. Watch those UOMs and make sure your data owners verify them BEFORE you let everyone in the system. We've had to jump through hoops on these because of smart part numbering and things not fixed that Sunday before we went live.

5. We got a special contract with Epicor to have support available during that weekend - was worth it since we had to make 1 call and had a tight timeline. I could have shaved some time not doing backups along the way but if I had to restart a step I could start there rather than from the beginning.

We started our conversion on a Friday at 3:13 PM and finished Sunday at 7:24 am to the point that users could come in to verify data. We started with an 88 GB database and finished at 125 GB after running the current fiscal year GL 10080.
Good luck!
Thank you Jose for the response, with our DB being pretty small(4GB) and the prices of SSDs dropping. I think we may have to pick up a couple and stripe them to see if that will speed up things. Thanks for your help with this!

Thank you for your input! Your situation appears to be very similar to ours. Our db is only 4GB progress. This is my second test past, I am trying to nail down the process as you talked about here so that I can get it done within a weekends time. My biggest issue right now seems to be the fact that we are going from 32bit to 64bit, therefore I had to setup an entired 32bit workstation just for this conversion purpose. Can you speak in terms of what kind of hardware specs you used to convert? Thanks again!

Thank you so much for all the information. I could ask you several dozen questions regarding your reponse, but I will just start with the "White Box" spec sheet you mentioned. Do I get this from Epicor Support or is this something I can find here on the yahoogroup? Also that weekend support option is killer, that's great info to know. Thanks again for all the information!

I could have shaved some time not doing backups along the way but if I had to restart a step I could start there rather than from the beginning.

I got the spec from Epicor Tech group (someone helping on a beta we were on) and must have deleted the message. SSDs are definitely the way to go - more important than throwing a ton of memory at a PC. White box is just a term we use for a PC someone threw together :)

Just so you know, from my own experience, you don't gain a lot when you
stripe SSDs at this point, the IO is so high on them that there's no
difference. Striping is only really a big deal(right now) for traditional
disks because of the alignment of drive heads, which is eliminated with an
SSD because of no moving parts.

If you are going to use SSDs, you are best to put the Program for Epicor on
one drive, and the DB all by itself on another, and if you work a 3rd disk
into the mix, but the BI file on that third disk, along with the temp files.

Also make sure you adjust the Admin Tools .pf file to better utilize
resources during the process as well, absolutely do not do it with the
default settings.

Thank you Jose for the response, with our DB being pretty small(4GB) and the
prices of SSDs dropping. I think we may have to pick up a couple and stripe
them to see if that will speed up things. Thanks for your help with this!
