I too would like to know more about the ioFusion cards. We also have complaints about speed.

So, depending on your recordsets, you can just return all the data and let your users build their own filters in the BAQs themselves. Might not seem like a big feature, but when you have 170k parts its tough to copy the whole thing out to Excel and do your filtering there - let the server do the heavy lifing. You can also selectively pick rows to copy out.
>
> Mass Update -- Talk to your CAM about the DMT. It is a life saver! I mine data out of the system regularly and send it off to engineers in spreadsheets. They then update the files, send them back and I load them in (I make sure they are loaded into the test first). It follows the business logic too so you're not at risk of corrupting your data as if you would go to the raw data [shiver]. There is a log with error reasons if anything kicks out. You can even use the script examples to schedule these off hours. Better yet, this works in v8 so you could get it at the v8 pricing and start using it right away.

E9 is much slower than V8 - if it weren't for those cards our users would be feeling it. Not only are they not noticing E9 being slower, they have reported a vast improvement in RMA credit processing, I see improvements with the DMT (12 RPM vs 83 RPM on the part file updates - HUGE!). Thanks Ron!

We are considering upgrading to Epicor 9 from Vantage 8.03. We tested Epicor 9 twice and found too many bugs to continue. We want to revisit Epicor as we have been insured that the lasted service pack will address only performance issues instead of trying to roll out new features. The proof will be in the pudding.

We are attending Insights in order to better judge the software. We have had several ERP demonstrations over the past few months. We were really blown away by Syteline.

I want to get a feel for Epicor 9 from users. Below is a list of wants and desires. Some are more important than others, but this list will help us determine if we continue on with Epicor 9 or move to a new ERP software platform. I would appreciate anyone's feedback in regards to Epicor 9's capability to perform these tasks. In addition, a nice note about the usability of each feature would be appreciated. Technically, Vantage 8.03 can do some of this, but it is impossible to actually use the feature.

I am curious to your thoughts. Thanks

ERP Desires:

1. Most important - Need actual proof of a features usability and ease of use. Many features are sold that are impossible to utilize or do not work as advertised

2. General ease of use

a. Remove rigidity from ERP

i. Allow for work-a-rounds

ii. System to be used as needed but per system requirements

iii. Part Records, Part Plant Records, Part Plant Warehouse Records, Part Revision Records, Etc... just to create the part... that's not any of the BOM data.

b. Mass update/Data Dump

i. Include item maintenance, Engineering Workbench, Scheduling

c. Improved Excel Interface

i. Include header

ii. Drill Down capability

iii. Move data back and forth between excel and ERP

d. Emailing from within the system

3. Sales

a. CRM

i. Ease of Use. Remove Rigidity

b. Ability to create Prospect customers and generate quotes for Prospects

i. Won't crowd the Customer Database with non-customers

c. Email SOs, Quotes, confirmations

d. Accurate delivery dates presented at Quote. Accounting for shop loads and purchased parts

4. Engineering

a. Solidworks Integration with ERP

i. Create and move data between ERP and Solidworks

ii. Link to documents in ERP from Solidworks

b. PDM interface between Solidworks and ERP

c. Schedule indirect staff such as drafting and engineering

5. Finance

a. Inability to correct once something is invoiced (may be Kice issue)

b. Project Costing/Invoicing

c. Freight Charges tracking

i. Ability to track freight by project, job, SO, PO, or Part

d. Credit Holds

6. Shipping

a. Automatic freight charge calculation

b. Automatic "Bestway" Selection

7. Scheduling

a. General Ease of Use

b. Rigidity of the System/Lack of flexibility

i. Finite schedule one operation or resource

c. Better reporting/Graphical Performance indicators

d. Accurate Load Report that takes into account the hours clocked

8. Purchasing

a. Ability for PO suggestion to show engineered, open, and/or unscheduled job demand

b. Time Phase material requirement report requires numerous modifications.

i. Ability to only review parts where the projected balance is below 0 or below the minimum

ii. Ability to filter by job demand status. Only show released and engineered.

iii. Show default supplier

c. Drop Shipment integration

d. Supplier reporting

e. Emailing of POs

f. Price on PO reverts to supplier price list if ANYTHING is changed on PO line

g. Shop requisitions

i. To Rigid system

h. Purchase direct to SO Line

i. Ability to flag suppliers with special fees per PO. When a PO suggestion for one part is created, the system would automatically look at all other parts and generate suggestions to bring inventory back to Max setting

9. IT

a. ERP bug and issue fixes separate from upgrades and enhancements

Andrew, wow...

Looking through this verbose email quickly, Epicor and Vantage do it already. Syteline can do it all, too. So can MS Dynamics and Oracle and JD.

Here’s my sincere suggestion: Since you already have 8.03, get the CDs for 9.x. Install it, convert your db to it. Play with it. Have your team leaders and users play with it. Take your time and perform a thorough due diligence. Use the heck out of it and make a more educated decision. You have all of this at your disposal for free; assuming you’re current on maintenance.

With the right tools, talent, resources and time, ANY ERP suite can deliver positive results to all of your points below.

Any ERP system “out of the box” won’t meet most people’s needs. In fact, I’ll gamble and say, ALL ERP systems “out of the box” WILL NOT meet ANY customers full wish list. It’s just impossible.

Good luck with your decision!

Well, I don’t know that I agree with you. We have done the exact test you are talking about with Epicor 9 twice all ready. It was so buggy that we could not get around to testing these enhancements as we couldn’t get a lot of the essential, basic functionality to work.

I can go through a huge list Vantage issues we have had since installing 8.00 from several weeks without a configurator to several months without a functioning manufacturing workbench. All do to updates and service packs. We have stabilized on version 8.03.408B and have been very hesitant to move away from this. We feel we have bumped up against the limits of this package and want to move to a system with more of the features listed below. Sure, some of this could be done in our current system, but not easily and certainly not easily from the individual user level.

While your point is correct, some ERP systems are easier to use than others. And we are aware that our entire wish list will not be meant out of the box. But it is smart to perform a due diligence to see which ones will perform the most out of the box.

Andrew

How can I export from Vantage to Excel and take the table headers?

How can I mass update Item Maintenance or every resource group tied to a method in engineering workbench?

When you say buggy, what exactly do you mean?

In terms of system bugs, I have found 9.05 to be a lot less buggy than 9.04 and 8.03(400&300) and all the way back to 8.0.

I have dealt with several different customers who have complained about "bugs" when in reality they are more often just adjustments that need to be to the system because of system differences, BAQs, reports, customizations, etc causing many of the issues. Also depends on how the conversions were done if everything gets converted correctly, plus dealing with the changes in the books, TranGLC and UOM differences.

Moving your DB, even for testing purposes from 8.03 to 9.05 and even 9.04 to 9.05 isn't something that can be done quickly, you need to put in quite a bit of time and effort to get your system setup.

If you just want to test out of the box functionality, then download the demo database and use that on your 9.05 installation.

Vic

Subject: [Vantage] Epicor 9 justifications

We are considering upgrading to Epicor 9 from Vantage 8.03. We tested Epicor 9 twice and found too many bugs to continue. We want to revisit Epicor as we have been insured that the lasted service pack will address only performance issues instead of trying to roll out new features. The proof will be in the pudding.

We are attending Insights in order to better judge the software. We have had several ERP demonstrations over the past few months. We were really blown away by Syteline.

I want to get a feel for Epicor 9 from users. Below is a list of wants and desires. Some are more important than others, but this list will help us determine if we continue on with Epicor 9 or move to a new ERP software platform. I would appreciate anyone's feedback in regards to Epicor 9's capability to perform these tasks. In addition, a nice note about the usability of each feature would be appreciated. Technically, Vantage 8.03 can do some of this, but it is impossible to actually use the feature.

I am curious to your thoughts. Thanks

ERP Desires:

1. Most important - Need actual proof of a features usability and ease of use. Many features are sold that are impossible to utilize or do not work as advertised

2. General ease of use

a. Remove rigidity from ERP

i. Allow for work-a-rounds

ii. System to be used as needed but per system requirements

iii. Part Records, Part Plant Records, Part Plant Warehouse Records, Part Revision Records, Etc... just to create the part... that's not any of the BOM data.

b. Mass update/Data Dump

i. Include item maintenance, Engineering Workbench, Scheduling

c. Improved Excel Interface

i. Include header

ii. Drill Down capability

iii. Move data back and forth between excel and ERP

d. Emailing from within the system

3. Sales

a. CRM

i. Ease of Use. Remove Rigidity

b. Ability to create Prospect customers and generate quotes for Prospects

i. Won't crowd the Customer Database with non-customers

c. Email SOs, Quotes, confirmations

d. Accurate delivery dates presented at Quote. Accounting for shop loads and purchased parts

4. Engineering

a. Solidworks Integration with ERP

i. Create and move data between ERP and Solidworks

ii. Link to documents in ERP from Solidworks

b. PDM interface between Solidworks and ERP

c. Schedule indirect staff such as drafting and engineering

5. Finance

a. Inability to correct once something is invoiced (may be Kice issue)

b. Project Costing/Invoicing

c. Freight Charges tracking

i. Ability to track freight by project, job, SO, PO, or Part

d. Credit Holds

6. Shipping

a. Automatic freight charge calculation

b. Automatic "Bestway" Selection

7. Scheduling

a. General Ease of Use

b. Rigidity of the System/Lack of flexibility

i. Finite schedule one operation or resource

c. Better reporting/Graphical Performance indicators

d. Accurate Load Report that takes into account the hours clocked

8. Purchasing

a. Ability for PO suggestion to show engineered, open, and/or unscheduled job demand

b. Time Phase material requirement report requires numerous modifications.

i. Ability to only review parts where the projected balance is below 0 or below the minimum

ii. Ability to filter by job demand status. Only show released and engineered.

iii. Show default supplier

c. Drop Shipment integration

d. Supplier reporting

e. Emailing of POs

f. Price on PO reverts to supplier price list if ANYTHING is changed on PO line

g. Shop requisitions

i. To Rigid system

h. Purchase direct to SO Line

i. Ability to flag suppliers with special fees per PO. When a PO suggestion for one part is created, the system would automatically look at all other parts and generate suggestions to bring inventory back to Max setting

9. IT

a. ERP bug and issue fixes separate from upgrades and enhancements

Good. I do think Epicor 9 has some advantages. This sounds like one.

What about mass updating? Can I mass update Item Maintenance or every resource group tied to amethod in engineering workbench?

We have not tested 9.05. We tested earlier versions.

Well, I dont know that I agree with you. We have done the exact test you are talking about with Epicor 9 twice all ready. It was so buggy that we could not get around to testing these enhancements as we couldnt get a lot of the essential, basic functionality to work.

Andrew, wow...

Looking through this verbose email quickly, Epicor and Vantage do it already. Syteline can do it all, too. So can MS Dynamics and Oracle and JD.

Heres my sincere suggestion: Since you already have 8.03, get the CDs for 9.x. Install it, convert your db to it. Play with it. Have your team leaders and users play with it. Take your time and perform a thorough due diligence. Use the heck out of it and make a more educated decision. You have all of this at your disposal for free; assuming youre current on maintenance.

With the right tools, talent, resources and time, ANY ERP suite can deliver positive results to all of your points below.

Any ERP system out of the box wont meet most peoples needs. In fact, Ill gamble and say, ALL ERP systems out of the box WILL NOT meet ANY customers full wish list. Its just impossible.

Good luck with your decision!

Vic

Subject: [Vantage] Epicor 9 justifications

We are considering upgrading to Epicor 9 from Vantage 8.03. We tested Epicor 9 twice and found too many bugs to continue. We want to revisit Epicor as we have been insured that the lasted service pack will address only performance issues instead of trying to roll out new features. The proof will be in the pudding.

We are attending Insights in order to better judge the software. We have had several ERP demonstrations over the past few months. We were really blown away by Syteline.

I want to get a feel for Epicor 9 from users. Below is a list of wants and desires. Some are more important than others, but this list will help us determine if we continue on with Epicor 9 or move to a new ERP software platform. I would appreciate anyone's feedback in regards to Epicor 9's capability to perform these tasks. In addition, a nice note about the usability of each feature would be appreciated. Technically, Vantage 8.03 can do some of this, but it is impossible to actually use the feature.

I am curious to your thoughts. Thanks

ERP Desires:

1. Most important - Need actual proof of a features usability and ease of use. Many features are sold that are impossible to utilize or do not work as advertised

2. General ease of use

a. Remove rigidity from ERP

i. Allow for work-a-rounds

ii. System to be used as needed but per system requirements

iii. Part Records, Part Plant Records, Part Plant Warehouse Records, Part Revision Records, Etc... just to create the part... that's not any of the BOM data.

b. Mass update/Data Dump

i. Include item maintenance, Engineering Workbench, Scheduling

c. Improved Excel Interface

i. Include header

ii. Drill Down capability

iii. Move data back and forth between excel and ERP

d. Emailing from within the system

3. Sales

a. CRM

i. Ease of Use. Remove Rigidity

b. Ability to create Prospect customers and generate quotes for Prospects

i. Won't crowd the Customer Database with non-customers

c. Email SOs, Quotes, confirmations

d. Accurate delivery dates presented at Quote. Accounting for shop loads and purchased parts

4. Engineering

a. Solidworks Integration with ERP

i. Create and move data between ERP and Solidworks

ii. Link to documents in ERP from Solidworks

b. PDM interface between Solidworks and ERP

c. Schedule indirect staff such as drafting and engineering

5. Finance

a. Inability to correct once something is invoiced (may be Kice issue)

b. Project Costing/Invoicing

c. Freight Charges tracking

i. Ability to track freight by project, job, SO, PO, or Part

d. Credit Holds

6. Shipping

a. Automatic freight charge calculation

b. Automatic "Bestway" Selection

7. Scheduling

a. General Ease of Use

b. Rigidity of the System/Lack of flexibility

i. Finite schedule one operation or resource

c. Better reporting/Graphical Performance indicators

d. Accurate Load Report that takes into account the hours clocked

8. Purchasing

a. Ability for PO suggestion to show engineered, open, and/or unscheduled job demand

b. Time Phase material requirement report requires numerous modifications.

i. Ability to only review parts where the projected balance is below 0 or below the minimum

ii. Ability to filter by job demand status. Only show released and engineered.

iii. Show default supplier

c. Drop Shipment integration

d. Supplier reporting

e. Emailing of POs

f. Price on PO reverts to supplier price list if ANYTHING is changed on PO line

g. Shop requisitions

i. To Rigid system

h. Purchase direct to SO Line

i. Ability to flag suppliers with special fees per PO. When a PO suggestion for one part is created, the system would automatically look at all other parts and generate suggestions to bring inventory back to Max setting

9. IT

a. ERP bug and issue fixes separate from upgrades and enhancements

Andrew,
I'm going to have to throw a question in here. When you say you were blown
away by Syteline, do you know what version you were talking about? We went
through a 1.5 day demo of syteline before deciding on Epicor just over a
year ago and were really disappointed with the functionality compared to
Epicor 9. Syteline felt like a bunch of different packages put together
without good continuity accross the modules. Then the Syteline customer
they took us to visit seemed to be doing everything outside the system in
Excel instead of using the functionality in the software. Granted you will
get a little bit of the different feel accross modules from any system but
I felt the continuity in Epicor was just much smoother from the end users
perspective. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks,
John Kreger

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Thanks. We don't have experience with Epicor 9.05. It was Syteline 8.

Andrew,
I'm going to have to throw a question in here.

Thanks,
John Kreger

It should be mentioned that the frustrations with the early 9-series
releases are pretty universal. I don't think I've met anyone that was
particularly happy with it. Of ten to fifteen companies I can think of that
are running 9-series Epicor, I only know ONE that isn't on 9.05 yet.
Considering the how slow the uptake for a major release usually is and the
fact that 9.05 wasn't a 'feature release', I think that says a lot.

Epicor tried to bring in a ton of new features and changes and didn't do
enough testing/polishing. There was a substantial backlash from most of the
user base over the various issues. Epicor re-arranged their plans a bit and
turned the 9.05 release into basically a massive bug-fix and technology
upgrade.

If you just compare the features (technical things aside), 9.04 and 9.05
look pretty similar; in day-to-day usage the difference is monumental.

Is nobody concerned about the server specs the latest version due to be released next week is asking for?

We saw a demo the other day of Sage X3 ERP that looked very slick and full of features.

As with all demos, they seem to be set up in such a way to make it look perfect then when you actually get it, it doesn't do half the things demonstrated without a lot of background work.

We learnt this the hard way with Epicor - the reps laptop was a miracle machine! :)

I think Syteline is called Infor in the UK.

Hopefully going to have a demo to see what it's all about but the comments about doing things in Excel a lot do concern me.

I am not sure why you want to be able to import from excel so much.

If the software was worth its weight you should be able to do everything you require within the ERP software in my eyes.

What about the stability of Epicor? We are on 9.05.505c and have regular performance issues.

What is Oracles product called?

Subject: Re: [Vantage] Epicor 9 justifications

Â

Chris. We visited a company running Syteline. They used excel much the same way we use excel. Pivot tables are great tools. What was pressive about Syteline was the ease at which data was extracted, how the data was presented (with headers), and the fact you could easily push data back into Syteline.

It sounds like Epicor 9.05 can do this. What concerns me is the adverb...easily.

I am also interested in the server requirements. Care to share what they are?

Andrew,

I'm one of the "lucky" ones that recently upgraded from 8.03.408 to 9.06.607b the beginning of this month. We did our due deligence with testing and still ran into a few issues. As someone reminds me "no one has died", and we're still taking in orders, shipping and invoicing.

As for the exports - not only can you take the column headers now, you can FILTER on the column headers.

It is your company's decision where you want to go, if you do head to E9:

1. Plan on rewriting your customizations, you would have to do this if you went to another package so it isn't a minus.

2. You will need beefier equipment. Also, we ended up scrapping VM and running a physical server with ioFusion cards. Thanks Ron!

3. Play with the upgrade now, but if you have the luxury, wait until 701 to actually convert. There are a TON of fixes in 700 including a complete rewrite of get details in job entry.

Good luck - I'd be interested in what your company decided and why.

Jenn

How can I export from Vantage to Excel and take the table headers?

How can I mass update Item Maintenance or every resource group tied to a method in engineering workbench?

Andrew

You know it depends on where you are looking at, if you are using simple baq's or even searching within something in E9 (Using 9.05.603 currently) you can simply quite literally just right click and choose "Copy To Excel". But granted you have to be looking at something in a table format and have something built to display this table. And that is really just a refence tool, not something that I'd consider a true feature just a neat tool to use or maybe for reporting.
