I have a company, call it Company 1. I am creating a new Company, call it Company 2.
I need all parts in Company 1 copied over to Company 2.

I spent a bit of time on the phone with Epicor today getting Sonic working. Once I did, I marked a few parts in Company 1 as "global".
and waited. Nothing happened.

I called again, and was told that the part has to exist in Company 2 first, then you go in for each part and link to the part in Company 1.

Do I completely misunderstand what is happening here?
All I want is that all parts from 1 copy over to 2. No further connection, no need to update one when the other changes; the 2 companies need never speak to each other again.

Is this possible without spending thousands on custom programming?

Thanks
Tony, the two safe ways I can think of doing this are by custom
programming or service connect workflow.

A service connect workflow could be created using a spreadsheet of the
parts you want to copy (you may not want to copy all of them) and a
service connect workflow that generates the new parts in the new company
from the old company. The part plant information also has to be
generated so that also needs to be taken into consideration as well as
any transformations to the reference files (Part Class, Product Group,
Tax Category, G/L account, etc).

A custom program could do the same as the SC workflow but would probably
run faster.

In any case, you are talking a few bucks.

Tony,
I concur with Charlie. Service Connect can take some time to run.. More columns and more rows means more time. How many parts are you copying?

When I did my part import with Service Connect it took me 1K parts per hour.

Just to refine something here.

In Vantage, you can mark a Part as Global. This will copy the part information to GlbPart. You can then link that GlbPart from the parent company to a child company. MultiCompany will then, via SonicMQ, keep the child in sync with the parent. In addition, the Part in the child company isn't editable/maintainable, except for those fields you choose not to send between the companies via the Global Table config.

That's the intended scenario that the linking parts between companies is for.

If you don't want them to update after that (i.e. you intentionally want to keep them from updating), you would need to set the Global Lock flag in the child company for each Part.

If you just want to load Part information from one company to another, and don't want the default updating behavior, then you really just want to export the Part information from one company and load it via Service Connect or a custom program.

Epicor will sell you a Part Import Service Connect workflow for $2K or something like that which is pretty reasonable. It is the simplest of the standard 'master' data to write SC workflows against (compared to say a BOM which is pretty complex to deal with) so you can also roll your own if you have the full SC license.

All data in companies in Vantage, for the most part, stand alone.

We wrote an import using Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) utilizing the Part Web Service.

Bob
Tony,

The simplest and fastest way to migrate the data would involve just a
few steps. First clone your live DB then run a simple SQL Update
statement on the clone to change the company ID to the new company
making sure to change all of the supporting tables as well. Then use
an ETL tool to import the parts back into the live DB. If you are
running SQL Server you can use the native DTS service. If you run
Progress you can use any number of third party ETL tools including
some that are open source.

Why would a client's XMLs be staying in their EpicorData\Reports\(login)
folder after printing even if the Archive Period was at 0 days. We have a
slew of xmls sitting in several client folders. This didn't happen on V8?

Thank you.

I have used the engineering workbench to import parts.
The catch is, that it only will import the part number, description, and
type (M or P).

This is done by creating a part, assign a revision, check it out to the
workbench. Then get details - >import BOM. The BOM is a CSV file with the
fields Part number, Description, Type, and Qty. After you import, checkin
the revision. Delete the part that you used to do the import and work with
your new parts by some of the "Macro programs" to update groups of files.

Good luck.
