I never suggested that the federal employment law implies that the employer
owns your knowledge. What the law states is that the employer owns the
products of your knowledge. Anything tangible thing that you create using
the tools provided by your employer during your employment is their solely
owned property and you are not free to distribute it.
If you use your employers PC to create that email the employer DOES own it
and they are free to monitor, filter and use it as they please just as if it
were created on their copier, lathe or press. All I am suggesting is that
people be cognizant of the fact that code and reports created using the
employers tools is not the authors to distribute. The knowledge used to
create it is yours but the product is not.

The rule of thumb I use is:
Does it give us a competitive advantage? Is it something that could be used
in competition against us? Did a customer give it to us as part of a job?
Etc.
If any are true, I don't post it. I think this would be work-for-hire.
But, if this federal law were true, all of us system people would be
required to change fields each time was changed jobs.
There would be a demand for "knowledge erasing" in the psychology field.
I don't think my employer could claim that my knowledge of Progress is
theirs to control.

I suppose, taken to an extreme, any email we post is a work product. The
knowledge we share with each other would then be proprietory, since, outside
our workplace we would never use or learn a product like Vantage. So the
email traffic of this group violates that law. So I guess we better all
just shut up and disband this list. !!!!!NOT!!!!

Posting files to a public forum is a dicey proposition under most
circumstances. For example, according to federal employment law, any
creation that is based upon the tools or knowledge garnered during the
course of employment is a "work product" and the sole property of the
employer. So posting that handy code snippet or report that you wrote at
work is a violation of the law unless you have an explicit release to do
so
from the owner.
The strange part of the practice is that nobody would ever think of
posting
one of their company's engineering diagrams or chemical formulations but
routinely post their code or reports.

It has come to my attention that someone posted a file called 510DBCzip to
the 'files' section of the list.
So .... To clarify list policy.
Please do NOT post ANY files on the list that "Belong" to EPICOR. This
includes patches, fixes, etc.
EPICOR gets VERY cranky when we do this.
If anyone needs a patch or a fix program that belongs to EPICOR they
should
contact EPICOR support who will be happy to send you the file.
In the meantime, we CAN post Progress code samples/programs, reports, free
or shareware utilities, etc.
Thanks,
Todd Anderson
