Epicor

Thanks for mentioning the report scheduler, but It was basically a
freebie, created with 30-40 hours of unpaid labor. I wrote it out of
generosity, ego had nothing to do with it. (and if interested in the
Brooklyn Bridge, it's still for sale ....)

I did borrow and modify some code written for another project, but I
deployed the scheduler at a couple of workstations in return, where
it is used daily.

If not familiar with the scheduler, there are two versions in a zip
file in the MISC section. A scaled down version with source code,
and a more powerful compiled version. I apologize to some who asked
for enhancements to the latter that haven't materialized, but it WAS
free you know...

Thanks again to Greg Krumley for adding functionality to the former -
Greg, I'll try to incorporate your "directory tree" code soon.

Oops, got to get back on the clock..

It has come to my attention that someone posted a file called 510DBCzip to
the 'files' section of the list.

So .... To clarify list policy.

Please do NOT post ANY files on the list that "Belong" to EPICOR. This
includes patches, fixes, etc.

EPICOR gets VERY cranky when we do this.

If anyone needs a patch or a fix program that belongs to EPICOR they should
contact EPICOR support who will be happy to send you the file.

In the meantime, we CAN post Progress code samples/programs, reports, free
or shareware utilities, etc.

Thanks,

Todd Anderson

Posting files to a public forum is a dicey proposition under most
circumstances. For example, according to federal employment law, any
creation that is based upon the tools or knowledge garnered during the
course of employment is a "work product" and the sole property of the
employer. So posting that handy code snippet or report that you wrote at
work is a violation of the law unless you have an explicit release to do so
from the owner.

The strange part of the practice is that nobody would ever think of posting
one of their company's engineering diagrams or chemical formulations but
routinely post their code or reports.

I suppose, taken to an extreme, any email we post is a work product. The
knowledge we share with each other would then be proprietory, since, outside
our workplace we would never use or learn a product like Vantage. So the
email traffic of this group violates that law. So I guess we better all

The rule of thumb I use is:
Does it give us a competitive advantage? Is it something that could be used
in competition against us? Did a customer give it to us as part of a job?
Etc.

If any are true, I don't post it. I think this would be work-for-hire.

But, if this federal law were true, all of us system people would be
required to change fields each time was changed jobs.

There would be a demand for "knowledge erasing" in the psychology field.

I don't think my employer could claim that my knowledge of Progress is
theirs to control.

True, each of the programs and reports we write are the property of our
employers. We should all make sure that our employers are aware that we are
posting work products to a public internet groups, and should make sure that
we are not divulging proprietary procedures or work practices.

In many cases, posting something to the list is a way to have it reviewed by
knowledgeable vantage users, so that the creator can recieve feedback and
improve the solution before deploying it to users, such as Lonnie's report
scheduling utility.

Alot of my current programming knowledge has been derived from working
examples posted to internet lists and sites, by programmers who were working
for an employer. Though I am going to make sure that my work comes first,
and that company money is not being wasted, I do not see a problem with
occasionally posting stripped down versions of code I've written, as to
"give back" to the open source community, and assist fellow developers. Had
it not been for the generosity of many other programmers, my training would
have been exponentially more expensive.

If every one on this list took the position that every moment of their day
must be spent doing only the task at hand, and that no knowledge one has
should be divulged for free, there would be no list.

This list is a community. We share knowledge, we gain knowledge. Thank you
to everyone on this list who has helped to increase my knowledge of vantage,
thus making me more profitable to my employer.

I think we all have the common sense enough to know the difference between
helping others use vantage, and divulging proprietary company procedure's.
Thanks, Michael for reminding us to excercise that common sense.

~Thaddeus

I never suggested that the federal employment law implies that the employer
owns your knowledge. What the law states is that the employer owns the
products of your knowledge. Anything tangible thing that you create using
the tools provided by your employer during your employment is their solely
owned property and you are not free to distribute it.

If you use your employers PC to create that email the employer DOES own it
and they are free to monitor, filter and use it as they please just as if it
were created on their copier, lathe or press. All I am suggesting is that
people be cognizant of the fact that code and reports created using the
employers tools is not the authors to distribute. The knowledge used to
create it is yours but the product is not.

How could my employer own my knowledge, especially when it is common
knowledge that my wife does?

Just my .02.

I suppose, taken to an extreme, any email we post is a work product. The
knowledge we share with each other would then be proprietory, since, outside
our workplace we would never use or learn a product like Vantage. So the
email traffic of this group violates that law. So I guess we better all
just shut up and disband this list.  !!!!!NOT!!!!

Posting files to a public forum is a dicey proposition under most
circumstances. For example, according to federal employment law, any
creation that is based upon the tools or knowledge garnered during the
course of employment is a "work product" and the sole property of the
employer. So posting that handy code snippet or report that you wrote at
work is a violation of the law unless you have an explicit release to do
so
 from the owner.

The strange part of the practice is that nobody would ever think of
posting
one of their company's engineering diagrams or chemical formulations but
routinely post their code or reports.

If anyone needs a patch or a fix program that belongs to EPICOR they
should
contact EPICOR support who will be happy to send you the file.

In the meantime, we CAN post Progress code samples/programs, reports, free
 or shareware utilities, etc.

 Thanks,
