Feedback needed on MRP

Version 4 had some serious bugs. Epicor did not put a priority on fixing
these issues either so be prepared to be at there mercy.I would proceed with
caution!

We are looking at purchasing the MRP module for Vantage. I now have the
task of learning what I can about it within 24 hours.
Could anyone comment on this module good or bad. We will be using this on
Vantage 4 after we make that upgrade, but the clock is ticking for the
purchase.
I would appreciate any information offered and thank anyone who responds in
advance.

We use it quite a bit. We get by but here are our complaints...

1. MRP will not use stock to fulfill a requirement of a manufactured
part that is build to order. This is a major design flaw and I
can't imagine that any other MRP system works this way.

2. (In version 5) MRP crashes if you manually create a job with
the same job number that MRP will someday use. This is listed
as a bug right now at epicor.

3. It locks up data collection users all the time on third shift
when MRP is run.

4. (In version 5) If you try to use time phase and po suggestions
the time phase screen is very "messy" to look at because
suggestions show up as a real requirements and affect the
balance. Here again this is a design flaw.
In version 4 this works much better.

5. We have some unidentified problem that is postponing PO's
that never used to happen in version 4. We are calling
tech about this today.

Your best bet is to contact Epicor and get a temporary license code, setup a
training database, put in the codes and play. Weight the cost of the module
against what you can find it can do for you.

Hi Aaron,

We have had some deep & meaningful discussions with
Epicor here in the UK over MRP since we went live with
V4 in Jan 2000. It's ok for number crunching, but not
particularly great as a production planning tool.
It has some strange logic when it comes to working
within a mixed mode manufacturing environment.
We believe that it "overplans" occasionally against
safety stock levels set and will duplicate
requirements if you dare to firm/create a job with a
different date to its timephasing, (which is
understandable to some degree) but it then doesn't
give you a message to cancel the job that's out of
phase (in fact we don't get any messages other than
purchasing expedites - maybe we have a bug, but Epicor
don't think so?).
I believe there are some enhancements in V5, one of
which will allow you to plan within a "no of days"
time frame which should help with duplicates.
Personally I don't think Vantage MRP has moved on
enough from the V3 "timephased supply" to really be
called MRP yet!

Just what our production manager says, "This is not true MRP." We bought it. We don't use it, and we're hurting because of it. Our old system did 10 times better MRP management than Vantage does.

(Note: what I say is based on looking at a test database)
