I think "technically" you can if you can get on the back side with the Progress database. However, I wouldn't recommend this and future upgrades and patches may re-truncate that field if schema changes are applied.
I'd encourage you to use a UD field and if you're not using the "Reference" field on Quote Entry, hide it. And you can rename your UD field "Reference" if you desire.

I need to modify the number of characters that can be placed in a field in Vantage.  The "Reference" field in Quote Entry currently allows the user to enter up to 10 characters. Is there any way that I can expand this to say 20 characters?
