Financial Report Writer

Although I do not like the idea of using an outside reporting tool, we do like you do. I export a couple of detail financial reports from Vista/Vantage, and then create a whole bunch of analysis and financial reports from that. I also bring in budget numbers at this stage since Epicor's budgeting functionality is little better than worthless.

Hi,

We are just starting to use the financial report writer.
It's a bit dry so we're also exporting into Excel and making it look a little more attractive there.

It works, but it's kind of clunky.

I'd like to hear what others are using for their financials?

We're on 8.03.305f.

Thanks,

It's a bit of a learning curve but for us FRx has been one of the better add-on module purchases we have made. Requires SQL Server (aside from whatever Vantage DB is used) and has some quirks connecting multiple users but otherwise makes great financial reports. It's a Microsoft product now and I believe latest version has a new name but I think Epicor still sells it as FRx.

Agreed on FRx.yes, quirky to keep running. The primary problem is related to
session counts. When the counter tops out FRx stops working. Recently a
patch is available to take the limit to a much higher number.

We run 4 refreshes a day, 8 AM to 8 PM. We just hit the old limit after
about 6 months of running FRx. The error message when you top out is not
related to the actual cause and takes a while to diagnose. Epicor tries to
get you to run Refresh 1X/day to postpone the problem but our Accounting
Department wants refreshment every 3 hours.

We do not use the QPR file, we set up the process directly in SQL Tasks, We
used to use the QPR but after many problems and many Support calls it
resolved into just using the SQL task without a QPR.

We do use the Options selection to set up the e-mail notices of refresh
results..these are invaluable.you will at least get a message when it fails,
not a panic call from your accountant 2 weeks after refreshes have stopped
and the Financials are not changing.

Word of caution.FRx requires 2 days of training to get started, 2 days later
on to straighten things out and 2 days later on to instruct on doing things
other than basic financials.. Total Cost of Ownership of FRx is steep but
worth the price if your Accounting department has good Excel skills.

BTW, buying FRx from MS vs. Epicor just leads to a difficult installation
and no Vantage-specific support.
