Finite Scheduling

Ours is a 32 bit...Do you think it's the reason why it takes so long?

We are running Vantage 5.2 322

We are testing some things with Finite Scheduling (Anyone using it out
there?)

We want to move our data over to 6.1 to do some testing but we want our
daily labor transactions to be able to be imported everyday without having
to restore a complete copy of 5.2. Can this be done?

Hey everyone,
Â
I have a problem with Finite scheduling and I think it is somewhere in a setup but I don't know where.
Â
The problem is that when we run MRP, Global Scheduling the Start Times on the some of the jobs are before Plant Opening. For instance Job 0000001 Start Time is 4:36AM and Due Time is 7:36AM. The plant doesn't start untill 7:00AM. The scheduler has to manuelly adjust each job to the correct start time and that means moving all of the other jobs as well.
Â
Any help would be appreciated.

I think this is in your Production Calendar. If you open the calendar for
the resource, resource group, plant or company, you'll see the Default Hours
Per Day box. Set that to 24. Now if you want the resource available at 7:00
AM, you have to start checking the boxes starting with 7:00 AM. These
numbers on the boxes are the actual times and not number of hours. (I'm not
sure how to do the 1/2 hour start times though.)

This was mentioned at Perspectives this year and I think this will fix you
up. Give it a try and let us know if it works.

Mark, We were just discussinng the same thing about the 1/2 hour.
Â
Victor actually brought that up to me about the pruduction calander and thhe help is very misleading.

Defining your capacity hours via multiple shop calendars doesn't always prevent the problems described.

The Job Entry job scheduler has a nasty habit of scheduling the 1st OP to start at midnight. This is true when the RG or R is defined as infinite OR when the OP carries no cycle time (or set up time) (and is being scheduled into finite RG or R's).

I see scattered (random) similar results after the global runs nightly and retightens the deck of job-op load. (Example: Our machine shop is 100% finite and there are about 1500 2-22 OP jobs scheduled on any given day... About 1/3rd will have at least one OP starting at midight even though this is out of the 'workday' bounds set for that resource's calendar).

It's a bug (but fortunately not a drop dead critical one like others that exist).

Hi Richard -

I use partially use Finite Schedule - We also have parts that have all kinds
of routings through all sorts of operations. What I found is that only a
few of our work centers are close enough to capacity to be considered
constraints. The others, (mostly saw, laser, forming, etc) have excess
capacity, so I let Vantage infinitely schedule those work centers. The
others, primarily weld and machining are the only ones I pay attention too.
Cuts down on the noise dramatically. Which version of Vantage are you on?

We too use a similar approach. We use finite scheduling on a couple resources that are machine constraints (Punching/Laser) and infinitely schedule all other resources.

We are running 9.04.506c and there is a bug in 9.04 where the finite resources will not schedule all operations finitely. Some of the operations get scheduled infinitely which results in a small overloading of the resource.

Is it normal the GSP in finite mode takes 5-6 days.
It takes 5-6 days to run the entire process (firm/infirm jobs)

Regards,

Richard
Need more information...

Number of jobs it schedules

How many of your resources are finite/how many resources -ops

# of indented levels (average)

Hardware run on?

Constrained materials?

APS - capabilities used?

There are so many variables but answering some of these questions may
help us answer that. Just off the cuff it seems like an exceedingly
long time.

1. Number of jobs it schedules => approx. 4000 jobs
2. How many of your resources are finite => 20-24 Machines are finite / Human (500) Resources are infinite.
3. How many resources -ops => Most of the time, only one.
4. # of indented levels (average) => 0 to 36
5. Hardware run on?

Just for comparison we have around 2000 jobs with up to 10 indented levels. 80 resources, all finite. One resource per op.
APS is installed but this is a recent addition to out E9 implementation project (upgrade from 6.1) so most parts are not constrained and are purchased to stock other than a few jobs being used to test APS.
Server is similar spec other than 2008 os and 24GB ram. E9.04.505C.

Under 20 minutes to run global scheduling.

We are scheduling on 8.03.409a

On average it schedules 4k -5k jobs

Up to 7 levels deep (average is around 2 or 3)

Typically 1 resource per operation

About 70% of the resources are finitely scheduled (important note here:
our finite horizon is only around 21 days, recommend you evaluate using
this in some fashion)

Server I think is a quad core zeon 3.2 gig with 16gb ram, vantage runs
on raid ten 5 x 146gb drives

Run time is around 2 hrs

Just for comparison we have around 2000 jobs with up to 10 indented
levels. 80 resources, all finite. One resource per op.
APS is installed but this is a recent addition to out E9 implementation
project (upgrade from 6.1) so most parts are not constrained and are
purchased to stock other than a few jobs being used to test APS.
Server is similar spec other than 2008 os and 24GB ram. E9.04.505C.

Under 20 minutes to run global scheduling.

1. Number of jobs it schedules => approx. 4000 jobs
2. How many of your resources are finite => 20-24 Machines are finite /
Human (500) Resources are infinite.
3. How many resources -ops => Most of the time, only one.
4. # of indented levels (average) => 0 to 36
5. Hardware run on?

5. Constrained materials? => This function is not working on our version
so we don't use it...
6. APS - capabilities used? => Yes, but when we use it, we put only 2/3
resources cause this function is very limited.

So, why it takes so long for us?
We have a good hardware setup...I think!
Do you already have this kind of results (4-5 days to run)
