Fixed Assets-Assets Maintenance

Hi all,
I'm in version 6.1, currently exploring Fixed
Assets Module but can't figure out how the Fixed
Assets Module work!
Observe that in the Asset Maintenance both asset
cost field & net book value field are dimmed, is this
means that users cant predetermined the asset cost &
net book value; the system with auto-calculated the
net book value for the FA! But how?
Any prompt is most appreciated!
