Free Help Desk - Spiceworks

From pressing log in to the dashboard loading up takes 38 seconds on our system.
That is in FF and IE. Surely that cant be right.

What can I try that will speed this up?

No scans are running during the day.

Â
It's not the fastest app in the world but 5 is faster than 4. It also runs
better on Firefox or Chrome. There were slowness issues with IE that I'm not
sure if that was addressed in Version 5 or not.

As an IT Pro who supports Epicor users, I know there are A LOT of calls, questions and problems from our users, not to mention all the typical computer problems. Well, I just wanted to pass along a free piece of software that we have been using for about the last year that has really helped us keep things straight. The software is Spiceworks. Does anyone else use it? If so, chime in or join your local Spiceworks Group. For those of you who don't use Spiceworks: Over one million IT pros (including me!) use it to do everything from inventory, monitor, troubleshoot ,report on and map the network, to run an easy-to-use help desk and user portal. Plus, it has an online community of IT pros like us who share real-world info on things like best practices, product reviews, vendor recommendations, and job advice.

The best part? It only takes 5 minutes to set up, is agent-less and it's FREE (I'm not kidding - no trial gimmicks or anything) because they run tech vendor ads on the side of the interface (no annoying or audio pop-ups).

Have a look & let me know what you think!
And now, back to program.........

Yep one of my Vantage 8 customers uses it and I have to say I think it's pretty impressive. Solid ruby on rails architecture under the hood. Strong community features and looks very modern. Hassle-free agents for desktops. An enterprise version is available as well.

It's a great product. It does almost everything that paid helpdesk
software does (and some that they don't do) and new features are rolling
out all the time.

Version 5 just came out, which is a significant upgrade.

One of the best things about it, is that we've gotten rid of out
manually manage excel spreadsheets!

We have spiceworks but we never use it. it is just kind of there on the server.

How can I access it from my client PC when it is installed on the server?

http://server:9675/login I have tried this link but it only lets me log in when
I am logged in to our server as well.

It wont let me log in via this link if I am not logged in to our server.

Do you know how it can be done or do I have to keep logging on the server first?

Thanks.

Spiceworks runs in two modes, Desktop and Service.

If it’s in Desktop mode, then you have to be logged into the server in order for it to run.

Once logged, you should be able to connect from client PCs too. If you log out of the server, it will stop Spiceworks. If you set up Spiceworks as a service, then it is running all the time.

Those metrics are unreasonable. You must have some contract support
for the remote sites?

Upgrade to version 5 it is greatly faster than 4 and older.
Being a 1 man IT person for 5 companies in 11 buildings in 2 states, I
could not function without Spiceworks.
Looking at getting a contract for the out of state company but that would only be for emergency work that needs a hands on person for otherwise I do everything remotely with the occasional trip down there. The other 4 companies are in the general area. I would say it's at worse a 20 min drive to and from any company.
This setup isn't unreasonable it just makes you be more proficient, proactive, and creative. If it wasn't for Vantage this job would be a piece of cake.

What error message are you getting when you attempt to login from a client browser? It almost sounds like your server might not be configured to allow access on port 9675.
It is best if you run it as a service on the server.
If you can get logged into spiceworks and get your account linked to the community (click on the Community link) there are tons of spiceworks employees, users and help documents to get your spiceworks installation working.
I recommend taking a day or so just to mess with spiceworks. Since I run the help desk, I actuall had to take a vacation day (I have tons of vacation anyways) and just play with it and get it tweaked.
If you can get into the spiceworks community look me up and PM me and I'll help as much as I can. If your spiceworks account is already linked to the community you can login with your spiceworks login at community.spiceworks.com

Hi

Is it just me, or do you find Spiceworks even vs 5 to be very slow when loading
between screens etc?

Thanks.

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
I've always thought that all the versions were reasonable in speed, but v 5 is the fastest. I use spiceworks on our LAN and from home. Here's a quick speed test, I'm currently at home, and I will login and pull up the Help Desk... 2 seconds and the screen is fully loaded.
There is a ton of variables with any web application, from network congestion to DNS problems to server setups. I recommend hitting the spiceworks community for help with your performance.
Here is the system requirements: http://community.spiceworks.com/help/Spiceworks_Requirements
Also, check your email settings to see how often it is checking for new email (tickets) and make sure it's not constantly scanning your network. Those items can really eat up network resources if not managed properly.
I don't want to use the Epicor group to troubleshoot this, but I will help anyway I can if you PM me or PM me in the Spiceworks community.

I only experience a slow down when loading the dashboard but I have a bunch of widgets on mine.

Other than that, 4.7 is running great for me and I'll probably upgrade to 5 this weekend.
