Brian,
We are in slightly a different situation, but have similar needs.
I need to add Servers & definitely do not want to install Server 2003 on
them.
Our hardware does not meet our usage of Vantage (We are trying some
things to help with that. But I'm not hopeful)
We also have our 3 year replacement coming on January 1st . Which
includes Exchange, MSSQL.
Our plan is to implement in a staged fashion as follows:
1. Purchase 2 new Servers (Dell 710R's) that are maxed out, for
SQL & Progress. (This will resolve our main issue of having SQL &
Progress on the same box)
2. Also, we may move to version 9, since we would have the
hardware to run it.
3. Take our relatively new Vantage server & use that for
AD/Exchange (Server 2008/Exchange 2010) This server will actually be
over kill for this but allow us to have the 64bit hardware required.
The problem I see, is that I have not read anyway that Epicor supports
Vantage running on Server 2008 & would appreciate feedback from anyone
that has attempted this and or was successful.
We have 2 servers currently running Server 2008 (Our terminal server,
(which as I have mentioned before, forgive the repeat) runs very solid &
and a FTP/Print server, which doesn't really count.
Since we have had Server 2008 up and running we have had not a single
issue & this wants me to say go for the upgrade, it's a solid
technology, but how long do we have to wait for Epicor to catch up?
Also, we are a 30 user company, with 18-20 users using Vantage all day,
so I think we are on the very small side of Vantage users.

Subject: [Vantage] OT: Keeping Up to Date with Microsoft
Three years ago we purchased a complete "refresh" of our Microsoft
OS/server/Office licenses with Open Value. Those have all come up for
renewal over the past few months.
I've decided to let the Office licenses lapse, as I can't come up with
enough of a business justification to merit the considerable expense.
Now I need to decide on the last piece, which is the server OS,
Exchange, and MSSQL server licenses. I currently own:
- Server 2008 including R2 (just out) w/ CALs and TS CALs
- MSSQL 2008 (relatively new) with CALs
- Exchange 2007 with CALs
I have a bevy of 32-bit hardware that I'm unlikely to be able to
replace anytime soon, and most of the new products are 64-bit only.
I decided to skip Exchange 2007 for a number of reasons, but was
planning on taking up Exchange 2010 with an appropriate hardware
refresh, maybe go towards a larger 64-bit box w/ virtualization if I can
swing it. But then again, I'll have to sell this.
I'm curious how other folks in similarly small-ish shops are thinking
about MS licensing and the business value of "keeping up". The only
value in the SA agreement is the upgrade rights, despite what the MS
folks and the resellers will try to tell you.
