I posted this a while back, maybe it didn't come through?

I wouldn't do it unless you really need the benefits Serial numbers
provide, such as traceability in an after sales situation (ie spare
parts etc). Using S/N's severely restricts your flexibilty, something
you need all you can get of in a make to order company I believe. By
making to order, you already have a link between the Sales order and the
Job you ran to fulfil that order, as you should use the make direct link
between the two.

Once you attribute S/N's to your run of 100 parts, what happens if you
damage a few parts, but after you have shipped them? You are faced with
a system nightmare. Also, how many times do your customers ring up and
change their orders, then you want to use the parts you are already
making as serial number parts, to now go and make a part which will
have another serial number. We make to stock, to fill forecast orders,
and we have enough problems using Serial numbers!!

are you just assigning a serial number for the out going product? or
are
there other information to track?
we have serial numbers for forged material and heat codes from mills.
also
we have internal serial numbers and the customers require us to ship
using
their serial numbers.

Vantage does not do this combo very well.
we wrote (or had a third party write it) an add on program to follow all
of
this and a bit more.

We're still on 5.0, it did not look as if the 6.?'s had any thing
better,
and don't have plans for 8.0. It would be nice to know what flexibility
8.0
can offer this subject.

We are a make to order manufacturing company looking to utilize the
serialization feature in version 6. The plan is to have a unique serial
number identify each part for traceability. We are looking for feedback
on
tips and/or pitfalls. Typical lot quantities are 20 to 150 pcs" thanks
