Gages & Calibrations

Nothing to stop you from keeping it in Access and just customizing a form to odbc/SQL query Access from within your .NET custom code and then display it as desired in Vantage.

We have a number of things in SQL server db's that still have no good home in the Progress db - so we left it there and just pull it into forms where needed.

We PLAN to eventually migrate a lot of this stuff to Progess - but it seemed smarter/safer to wait for the product to continue to mature (and perhaps provide native tables to hold the data instead of rushing to judgement that will never happen and dumping it to UD tables).

Frankly, there is a lot less code involved integrating non-Progress data via odbc/sql than there is to use UD tables.

Currently I'm debating seeing what I can do in V8 with a custom form and
some code. We don't need it to be some out the this world system, just a
place to store and track data and gages with some flags. We currently
use Access but we are trying to get as many disparate systems into one,
that being Vantage.

Right now we are using something called QA Calibrate to track all
of this information. We also are planning on migrating it into
Vantage in the future. I would be interested in hearing what you
come up with.

Anyone out there handling the tracking of gages and calibrations in
Vantage?
If so, can you elaborate.

No. There is no elegant way in Vantage I've found to do so that isn't more trouble than it's worth as, let's face, you really don't need much more than some recurring schedules in outlook with attachments listing the specific tools/gauges to calibrate.

If you are hell bent on doing it in Vantage - how are you tools gauges set up in vantage now? (Are they resources that actually get called in methods? Are they Parts?)

If they are resources, you could create scheduled jobs that are nothing more than a single OP calling the tool/guage resource(s) (an indicating that calibration is to be checked by a dispatchable QC resource) on whatever schedule frequency you wish. (We used to schedule preventitive maintenance on our legacy system this way.)

If they are Parts, you could make them lot or serial number controlled and leverage the Shelf Life Part.field to trigger review via a custom report or dashboard. (Basically a serial number or lot aged inventory report.)

We do something similar with elastomer seal inventory (and didn't need to go to lot or serial number control to do it... Just leveraged the Inventory transaction tables to determine receipt time and then - using an assumption that physically controlled FIFO inventory handling is reliable - perform a FIFO simulation to determine if inventory on-hand has exceeded its Shelf Life.

Personally, I'd do the Outlook thing myself unless you are already partially invested in setting it up in Vantage.

Rob Brown.
