Global Alerts

I am trying to configure alert # 1150. Which is "Operation has been
completed" It says that this works in a certain way. Can anyone tell me
how this works, also is there a way to create custom alerts or only have an
alert set for a specific department/departments. Also, Last week i could
turn the alerts on and off and have them sent to people, now it says there
is no mail server available. How do i correct this. Any help will be
greatly appreciated as it always is

Thanks

You have to have Outlook (or whatever MAPI email you use) running on the machine at the time the alert is triggered in on that same machine for the alert to work.

In the Job Operation there is a tick box for 'Alert on Comp[letion'
If this is ticked and the global alert is active you will receive an
e-mail when the Qty Completed for that operation equals or goes above
the Production Qty. You do not have to mark the Job completed in Job
Closing.

As far as customising alerts is concerned I believe that several
people have requested for this to be available. There were rumours that
the facility would be provided soon but who knows when!?!

Hope this helps

I'm pretty sure Vantage doesn't care what e-mail server you are using. It
uses the e-mail client on your PC to send the alerts out. We use Outlook
and Windows messaging and they both work fine. If you send out global
alerts and your PC does not have the e-mail client running all messages go
into a global alert error message log... after you start your e-mail program
you can select them to be resent and they will be delivered at that time.

Paul is correct, however, you do have to be careful as to your set-up
because of the very fact that Vantage uses the Mail Client's Address book on
the client machine when sending an email. However, the addresses Vantage
tries to use are stored in the Vantage database. So, if you are using an
internet email server (such as SLMail for example), that does not centrally
store the companies address book (like Exchange does for example), you must
make sure that EVERY client spells the persons name in their local address
book EXACTLY as it is in the Vantage database. If it is not (ex. Bill
Schwartz vs. William Schwartz), the email will error out. Obviously, this
method can become an administrative nightmare. So, the preferred method
uses a mail server that centrally maintains the address book. That way you
only have to maintain the lists in two different places.

Hope this helps.

If I recall correctly, Vantage requires a MAPI compliant mail server. Most
of them are MAPI Compliant, but we were lucky enough to have one that
wasn't, until we got our exchange server.

Global Alerts work for us using Outlook Express. One machine that has Outlook 2000 AND Outlook Express installed doesn't work for Global Alerts for some reason. But other wise they work fine.

Hello,

I am trying to implement global Alerts, for when orders are shipped. We
have never used alerts before but we are restructuring our parts dept.
Which now this feature would be useful.

This is what I did. I went to global alerts, changed to send alerts and
memo. I added a to: (dhieber@...). And exited.
Which to me this was straight forward. But when the shipping dept.
shipped are part, I did not receive the email.

has anyone successfully set up global alerts. Am I missing something.

BTW - I am using Netscape.

Thanks,

Troy,

Thanks - I looked also but could not find anything For the data entry clerk have to check that every time to me defeats the purpose of having global alerts for order shipping.
I can understand to appoint that someone might not want to be notified when every shipment goes out but... now i have to rely on a data entry clerk to check the box. It seems
redundant to me.

Anyways - thanks for your reply.

Dina,

Sounds like a good candidate for an "Enhancement Request".

Dina

Diana,

If it didn't send there should be an alert error in the log. You have to be
sure your e-mail address is in the address book of the sending machine. The
sending machine may not be the work station that made the shipment.

Also the sending workstation must have a e-mail service running. I've had
data collection work stations that don't have e-mail generate an alert
error. I've had to resend the alert manually.

Thanks,

Hello,

Dina's message has caused me to consider whether our company could benefit
from Global Alerts. I was after some advice on whether it would work in a
company where a number of clients don't have email access. I gather the
message comes from the client and not the server (enhancement request ?).
The reason we have quite a few Vantage users without mail is that our remote
sites use Terminal Services and Vantage is their ONLY application,
everything else is run on the local PC.

The remote sites are typically the first to login, I don't fancy the idea of
having to check for failed messages and having to resend. Even for the main
site not everyone has mail in their startup. I've also heard mention of the
address book names being consistent with Vantage names ?

Thanks

In the Global alerts, there is a setting for 'Part on hand below reorder point'. Where in the part options do you set the reorder point? Is it the Minimum on had quantity? If so then what is the Global alert "Part on hand below minimum" used for?

Thanks,

Jasper

We use this message and interpret it as "On Hand Quantity is less than or
equal to Safety Stock Value + Minimum On Hand Value". If you don't enter a
value in Safety Stock then the message is triggered by the Minimum On Hand
Value, essentially making both messages the same.
