I'd appreciate any feedback regarding problems/issues with the
upgrade to 4.0. Especially in regards to the accounting side.

Thanks,

What's the best way to incorporate work-in-process into the new
implementation? i.e. jobs already moving through the shop. How do you get
the cost from the old system into the new system, especially for accounting
purposes? I ask this question because I'm also moving to 4.0 soon and when
I do, it will be with a completely new company. Same vantage just a new
company in order to totally get rid of a lot of junk that has accumulated
over the years.

Thanks.

We calculated all of our WIP costs, broken out into labor,
materials, and overhead. Then, accounting made journal entries into the
appropriate accounts.
You lose detailed costing info on the jobs in the shop at the time
of conversion, but if your turnover is high enough, that annoyance goes away
(most of our jobs are out of here within two months).

Post a single cost adjustment on the first operation of the job.
Example: Friday is last day on old system, Friday night run wip report from
old system.
Saturday. Post adjustments to jobs on new system.
If the new system start date is January 1st use December 25th or something
obvious for all of your adjustments.
This will help down the road when running report builder reports.
You may want to just lump it under labor to keep it simple, atleast wip
totals and COGS for January will tie out.

You guys are great. I've received some great feedback on this, both
off-list and on.

I want to run this by you all and see how you think it will fly. We are
planning on starting 4.0 out rounding all quote numbers, order numbers, etc
up to the next 10000 increment for all new activity. Any current data be it
open orders, open jobs, etc will be entered to 4.0 with whatever the 3.0
number is. Open orders will get just the open line item(s), same thing with
open jobs. Any WIP will get a one-time adjustment to labor, material,
subcontract in order to carry forward the costs. Labor entries to the open
job numbers on 4.0 will then be possible.

Based on the responses I've gotten - virtually everyone suggested doing it
just this way - I presented this to the rest of the gang here and it was met
with approval.

Thanks again, guys and do let me know if my approach is off base.

HANG ON A SECOND......the conversion from 3.0 to 4.0 is not like when we
converted from Classic - is it? Does the existing 3.0 data not convert? We
set up 4.0 as a test with a copy of our 3.0 database and the data seemingly
converted just fine - it makes me worried when we are talking about
adjustments.....what type of adjusting entries did you have to make?
