Hard Drive Emergency - Help

It worked. Whooooooooo, man. The first thing I tried was restoring the
image to a new HD. I wasn't sure what effect a larger size HD would have or
even if the image was good. (It didn't and it was.) Thankfully I didn't
have to use the suggestions you guys gave me. But I was sure one of them
ought to do it - they all sounded feasable. I calmed down once I was armed
with a handful of things to try. Once again, I thank you for caring enough
to help. I will pay it forward. Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday.

Just had a blue screen of death stop error come up after trying to partition
magic a c-drive. I have a Drive image from last night. Anybody out there
right now who can help?

If you're on windows 2k, try booting from the CD to the recovery console and
running chkdsk, fix any errors it finds. I had the exact same thing happen
a while ago using Partition Magic and that fixed it.

Where is the drive image located. On the same drive, tape or network drive?

I've had similar issues with partition magic. BSOD's on a dual boot 2kpro /
2k server laptop. Once the problem is fixed, I would suggest reformatting
the drives and setting up the partitions using the 2K disk.

If I recall correctly, you mentioned your drive images were on the d:
partition of the same physical hard drive. Is that the case?

In this case, there was no room for an image last night, so I added a 40G
2nd physical hd to that ws and let drive image save to that one. It was the

I have already restored once today using the drive image image from that

What exactly are you using partition magic to do? What is the state of the
C drive (partition wise) after the drive image is restored?

It would seem to me that you'd want to reformat the drive, partition it,
then restore the drive image.

I had C and D partitions on same HD. Added 2nd HD last night and set up
drive image to get an image. This morning I deleted the d-partition on the
first HD (it had nothing on it) and then changed the C-partion from Fat32 to
NTFS - then tried to expand the C-partition to take up the full space on
that first HD. That's where the blue screen happened. And it will not
boot - same stop error message.

I have another 60G hd laying around. I thought I would try to restore the
image to that new HD. Any reason why that wouldn't work?

Or is the running chkdsk (like Ed suggested) a better idea to try first?

If I recall correctly, you mentioned your drive images were on the d:

If you're on windows 2k, try booting from the CD to the recovery console and
running chkdsk, fix any errors it finds. I had the exact same thing happen

I had a similar issue with Partition Magic. 1st did you make a rescue disk,
2nd. You need this disk to reduce the size of your partition. When you
boot the partition magic rescue disk you should see a diagram of your
partitions. Then it should allow you to make your boot partition smaller.
Cut the partition size down then see if it boots again.

I had C and D partitions on same HD. Added 2nd HD last night and set up
drive image to get an image. This morning I deleted the d-partition on
the
first HD (it had nothing on it) and then changed the C-partion from Fat32
to
NTFS - then tried to expand the C-partition to take up the full space on
that first HD. That's where the blue screen happened. And it will not
boot - same stop error message.

I have another 60G hd laying around. I thought I would try to restore the
image to that new HD. Any reason why that wouldn't work?

Or is the running chkdsk (like Ed suggested) a better idea to try first?

It would seem to me that you'd want to reformat the drive, partition it,

Given my negative experiences with it, I wouldn't touch partition magic with
a 10 foot pole.

That said, you need to determine if your Drive Image is a Disk image or a
Partition image.

If what have is a disk image (one that contains multiple partitions), then
restore the image (overwriting/reformatting the drive). Then use Drive
Image to create a Partition Image on the separate hard drive.

If your Image is already a Partition image (doesn't contain multiple
partitions), then you're good to go.

Using the 2K setup utility, wipe out all the partitions, and create a new
one that fills up the entire drive. Restore the Partition Image to that
drive.

Frankly, I'm afraid to do anything more to that original drive. I don't
eveen know if the image is good. For all i know it could have been
corrupted. I just don't know. Powerquest suggested, since I have an extra
blank HD, that I install w2K on it, and then pull the important files out of
the image drive. Naturally it's the holiday and it had to happen now. I
want to try the most likely fix first. They will all take time. Can't
decide. Not in too coherent of a frame of mind right now anyway - lost some
important info on that drive. Thanks to all.

I made up my mind finally. I'm going to try restoring the image to a new HD
first. If that doesn't work, I can put the original HD back in the PC, and
run the windows install CD repair console and try some things on that.
According to powerquest tech support, the repair console has repair -
fixboot - fixmbr, and to try them in that order.

This is the first time I've been in a really tough spot like this -
generally, there was some kind of a net or another - this time I was in the
process of setting up the net when it happened. I'm a big fan of redoing
the ws's from scratch when there's a need to use partition magic, and that's
what I've always done. It keeps murphy's law from applying itself. but
this time, I've been trying to take care of adjusting the partition sizes of
40 machines, and took the Partition Magic road. Not a great choice.

And another lesson learned, don't attempt anything at all just before a
holiday. This seemed pretty harmless, because I've done it on a dozen
machines prior to this that went OK. I'll try every suggestion and hope one
of them works. Thanks again for the help.

What exactly are you using partition magic to do? What is the state of
the
C drive (partition wise) after the drive image is restored?

It would seem to me that you'd want to reformat the drive, partition it,
then restore the drive image.

In this case, there was no room for an image last night, so I added a 40G
2nd physical hd to that ws and let drive image save to that one. It was
the
D-drive the image is saved to.

I've had similar issues with partition magic. BSOD's on a dual boot 2kpro
/
2k server laptop. Once the problem is fixed, I would suggest reformatting
the drives and setting up the partitions using the 2K disk.

If I recall correctly, you mentioned your drive images were on the d:
partition of the same physical hard drive. Is that the case?

If you're on windows 2k, try booting from the CD to the recovery console
and
running chkdsk, fix any errors it finds. I had the exact same thing
happen
a while ago using Partition Magic and that fixed it.
