Help - Part Numbering CONTROL

Bob,

We used the User Fields in Part Master. The person entering the part
into part master puts in their name, date, used on, etc. You can add
date, integer, decimal and character fields.

Looking for help on this

We are a decentralized Job Shop. I have given access to the
part master to
a multitude of people here. They create both Manufactured and
Purchased
parts.

I have set up a standard by which people are to create purchased
parts and
most of the time the standard is followed. Unfortunately, I
have no way of
knowing when the part is created, the date or user who has
created it. I
would like to stop the insanity. Any suggestions, other than
creating a
position of V.P. Part Master Maintenance??

Bob:

If you want, you can security lock out anyone you choose.

If you only want to know when an item is created (I haven't tried this,
so I don't know) maybe you can set up an alert to notify you of the
event.

I would certainly limit the number of people creating part records to a
centrist individual (data entry?) that would follow rules and advise you
of scenarios from hell...

Just thoughts at large. I feel your pain!!

What's wrong with that title!?!?!?! It's better than a sharp stick in the
eye!

Seriously though - We are an ISO shop which is probably why there are two
very specific written procedures for entering part numbers and a very
limited number of people who can do so. Yes, there is a procedure for
manufactured part numbers and a different one for vendor part numbers. This
tight control works for us. We had some curious part numbers created when
others were allowed free reign.

I just created a part and added an operation on the training db. The
PartAudit table was updated when operations added - time/date stamped
and user name recorded.

I would write a report on PartAudit sorting by partnum ascending and
changedate descending. Group on partnum and changedate, the earliest
changedate and corresponding user should show up on changedate group
footer.

This should work for manufactured parts, but I don't have a solution
for purchased parts.

I monitor new purchase parts entered by running a RB report looking at part
numbers not approved. Limited security on approvals.
