Help - Progress 9.1A Install Stuck

OK, that did it (MDAC 2.5 that is). 9.1A is installed patch & all, 5.0 is
installed and DB restored from backup and IDXBUILD is in process (for next 2
hrs or so). I logged an on-line call with Epicor earlier so I will pass
along the fix for their future reference before I leave. Would be nice to
see it in the Answerbook. Thanks again Ted, that was exactly the fix.
Hurray for nightowls.

I'm in the upgrade from 4.0 to 5.0 installing Progress 9.1A and it is
stalled. In case there is anyone still at work or maybe further West I'm
hoping someone has seen this before. Right after it says it is installing
Data Access 2.1 there are no messages on the Progress install screen, no
progress boxes or anything and it has been like this for 1/2 hour. The
disks flash once in awhile and the performance monitor shows little or no
CPU activity. 99% idle. Hard to tell if it is doing anything at all. If I
try to close the install it wanrs that it is not yet complete so I resume.

Anyone out there ever see this or hear of it on a Progress install? Is this
typical? I've got all the Progress related services stopped and nothing
else running on the server. There is no mention in the install guide and I
don't recall this occuring on our test platform. I'm really hoping to get
5.0 on tonight so I can deal with 5.1 and 5.2 tomorrow. If I have to wait
for Epicor support tomorrow I'll be very behind schedule.

Thanks for any help or experiences with the 9.1A install.

Tossing two ideas out for comments (tonight or Sat.) while I run for some
food.
1. Doesn't MS-Access install the Data Access component? If I install
MS-Access on the server might it not get past that point?
2. How about if I install Progress 9.1C (going to have to anyway)? Might it
not get a later version of DA put on?
Just grasping at things to try. Back in an hour.

Hi Todd,
Don't know if you are still around or not. Do you have Internet Explorer 5.0 installed on the server. I believe it is a requirement for Vantage, and I've seen Data Access installed on Workstation Client installs that didn't have Vantage 5.0 on them. Just a stray thought.

Sounds like something is definitely awry. I did the upgrade on an old
beater,
homegrown Pentium II server a couple month's ago and while this step did
take a
while did not take an hour.

Probably not much help, but if you're like me (impatient) you may try
starting
from scratch...

Good luck!

<<<< Note: This message will probably be obsolete after Friday 10/4 >>>>>>

Yes, I'm sure at least IE 5.0 is on there. Also just prior to starting V5.0
I did the SPK6 install. I could try upping IE to 6.0 but I don't think that
is the problem. Another thing I tried was stopping all other services
including Norton Corp. AV but I think parts of it are still in memory. I'm
wondering if there is something in it causing the stall. The "Answerbook"
had an item about 9.0B getting stuck on a .DLL that was in use but the
problem was supposed to have been fixed in 9.1A. OH ,well... off to try
MS-Access then 9.1C and see if either one of those helps.
Thanks for the ideas.

Hi Todd,
Don't know if you are still around or not. Do you have Internet Explorer
5.0 installed on the server. I believe it is a requirement for Vantage, and
I've seen Data Access installed on Workstation Client installs that didn't
have Vantage 5.0 on them. Just a stray thought.

Title:

Progress Install Fails At MDAC Initialization Message

Creation:

12-Feb-2002

Modified:

20-Mar-2002

SUMMARY:

A Progress 9.1B install on NT 4.0 SP6a could hang following an MDAC
(Microsoft Data Access Components) initialization message. No other
errors are registered. Rebooting the system, with the partial
install, then results in a Microsoft error:

OLEMAINTHREADWNDNAME: ....

SOLUTION:

1) Remove the partial install of 9.1B.

2) Download MDAC version 2.5 from Microsoft's website:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=18822&area=se
arch&ordinal=13

3) Install MDAC.

4) Install Progress 9.1B.

NOTE: Testing of earlier MDAC versions, 2.1XXX and 2.2XXX showed
similar failures, while version 2.5 corrected the install problem.

YES! I am getting the OleMainThreadWind message!. I think this may be
exactly it.
Curiously when I installed MS-Access2000 it too hung right at the end in the
part right after a reboot. I killed it and it all seemed to be there and I
could open the sample databases. So I went ahead and tried to isntall the
9.1A24 patch and it installed fine. But still no program group with
Progress tools.

I am going to follow the steps you've sent and see where this goes.
Thank you very much! This night might not be as long as I feared.

Title:

Progress Install Fails At MDAC Initialization Message

Creation:

12-Feb-2002

Modified:

20-Mar-2002

SUMMARY:

A Progress 9.1B install on NT 4.0 SP6a could hang following an MDAC
(Microsoft Data Access Components) initialization message. No other
errors are registered. Rebooting the system, with the partial
install, then results in a Microsoft error:

OLEMAINTHREADWNDNAME: ....

SOLUTION:

1) Remove the partial install of 9.1B.

2) Download MDAC version 2.5 from Microsoft's website:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=18822
<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=18822&area=se>
&area=se
arch&ordinal=13

3) Install MDAC.

4) Install Progress 9.1B.

NOTE: Testing of earlier MDAC versions, 2.1XXX and 2.2XXX showed
similar failures, while version 2.5 corrected the install problem.

Tossing two ideas out for comments (tonight or Sat.) while I run for some
food.
1. Doesn't MS-Access install the Data Access component? If I install
MS-Access on the server might it not get past that point?
2. How about if I install Progress 9.1C (going to have to anyway)? Might
it
not get a later version of DA put on?
Just grasping at things to try. Back in an hour.

Was down in computer room and just resorted to starting over. I'll just
have to keep trying I guess until 9am CDT tomorrow when Epicor support
gets
in. !hat a way to start an upgrade! Dead out of the chute. Thanks
anyway.

Sounds like something is definitely awry. I did the upgrade on an old
beater,
homegrown Pentium II server a couple month's ago and while this step did
take a
while did not take an hour.

Probably not much help, but if you're like me (impatient) you may try
starting
from scratch...

Good luck!

Mike

Server. Installing from the 5.0 CD. It's been running about an hour now
with no activity or messages.

Are you doing the Progress client install? Or is this on the server.

<<<< Note: This message will probably be obsolete after Friday 10/4 >>>>>>

I'm in the upgrade from 4.0 to 5.0 installing Progress 9.1A and it is
stalled. In case there is anyone still at work or maybe further West I'm
hoping someone has seen this before. Right after it says it is installing
Data Access 2.1 there are no messages on the Progress install screen, no
progress boxes or anything and it has been like this for 1/2 hour. The
disks flash once in awhile and the performance monitor shows little or no
CPU activity. 99% idle. Hard to tell if it is doing anything at all. If
I
try to close the install it wanrs that it is not yet complete so I resume.

Anyone out there ever see this or hear of it on a Progress install? Is
this
typical? I've got all the Progress related services stopped and nothing
else running on the server. There is no mention in the install guide and
I
don't recall this occuring on our test platform. I'm really hoping to get
5.0 on tonight so I can deal with 5.1 and 5.2 tomorrow. If I have to wait
for Epicor support tomorrow I'll be very behind schedule.

Thanks for any help or experiences with the 9.1A install.

OK, a followup - how do you uninstall Progress? Without a program group
there is nothing to run. I don't see any obvious programs under Progress or
Progress/bin (like uninstall.exe). I'm thinkng to maybe just re-install
P9.1A over itself after loading MDAC 2.5.
Thanks again,
-Todd
