HELP - Releasing Material to Sub Contractor

Mitch,
You are certainly correct. The point we're trying to stress is that
somebody has to know what you are sending out on the subcontract pack
slip. If you have a material of some sort you have to make a statement
in the comments. For example: "Mr. Vendor, I want you to make Part C for
me.(which is the part number on the PO) I'm sending you parts A and B
that need to be welded together to make C." It's the parts A & B that
the system doesn't really track (they don't appear on the pack slip) for you

as they are welded (consumed).
Financially, Vantage does what is should do to track various cost of
materials. It just doesn't give an automated way to track those components
when they are out of the shop, on the paperwork the vendor sees.

It's one thing to train employees. That's a constant in business today.
Having clear instructions for the vendors is a must, and we're looking for
the best way to achieve this.

Thanks, Rhonda Sherer

OK, I am missing something here. Here is what we do. The "Pin" is made
from a "Blank". Both items are stocked.

We cut a job for the Pin. The Blank is in the BOM as the material from
which the Pin is made. The first operation is to pull the blanks from
stock, the second is the sub-op, the remaining operations are done here
after the sub-op is complete. The first op is the Rel Op which relieves the
inventory since we backflush.

The PO is for the Pin and linked to the job. We put a note on the PO to
remind the vendor that the pin is made from the Blank we are shipping to
him. It helps him keep the different Blanks straight on his end. The
system pulls the Blanks from stock with the Shipper. Receive the Pin back
when he is finished.

What did I miss? Call me if you want.

Here is the scenario that I need help with.

We have part # 24332C that I order from a vendor. I supply him with
part # EML24331C to make this part for us. My quetion is how do I
release inventory of part # eml24331C to the vendor and be able to track
it thru Vantage.

So you have a part EML24331C, and the vendor is modifying that part to
conform to 24332C?

Or is this a part being made from scratch, and you are giving the vendor a
seperate part number under which you want to store the issued inventory?

I guess you could create a separate warehouse/bin for the EMLl24331C stock
that you issue to the vendor.... Purchase your part 24332C just like you
would any old fab part, and then when you recieve it, subtract the quantity
recieved from the amount issued in the EML124331C bin. This would create
data that could potentially be tracked in a complex report, but it is still
two separate transactions that require user intervention in order for the
process to occur.

I'm sure there has to be a way to account for this. How about putting
EML12331C lamination in as a material for the 24332C part?

Of course, coming up with such solutions is not my job, though it is my job
to write reports that take in to account all the unique ways we've utilized
vantage.

You need to create a subcontractor operation in your BOM/Router. The BOM
has the finished part as its part 24332C, it has EML124331C as its material
which is sent to the subcontract as a subcontractor operation. When you
send it to the subcontractor you will be removing the EML124331C material
from inventory, when the subcontractor returns the finished product to you,
you will be receiving 24332C because that is the part that you will be using
for whatever your finished material is. This is called a multilevel bill of
material. the 24332C is a component that is made up of the EML 124331C and
whatever the subcontractor adds to it and does to it. When you issue
material to the job it should allow you to create a shipping document for
the subcontractor and then you receive the completed material back to the
24332C part in the job for your finished product. Let me know if you need
any more information on this.

Dina,

How do you bring in this 24332C part? Do you have more to do to the part
after you receive it from the vendor or is it complete? We have scenarios
that go both ways with two different ways of handling them.

I agree with Cameron, We have many process's which
require outside vendor operation. Setting this up in
your BOM and Operation clears the entire mess of
tracking inventory and help control the folw of
material.

Jim,

Here is my problem doing it they way you and Camerson are stating. If
I am understanding you correctly.

My job # is 24332C. The Top Level is 24332C qty pieces to be made is 6,
the operation is sub contract operation, the material is EML124331C qty
pieces needed 1,006.

Now when we enter the p.o. we choose subcontract operation. But the
part that is pulling up is 24332C qty 6. Which is right because that is
what we are purchasing. Now when I go to ship EML24331C to the vendor
using subcontract operation shipment, it is showing that I am sending
24332C qty 6. NOT the EML24331C. How can I show that I am sending 1006
pieces to the vendor. (besides comments or hand typing)

What Cameron said. We do this and it works great. We send a blank to the
sub, he modifies it and we receive it back under several different part
numbers. It can be finished at this point or we may also do additional work
to finish the part. We cut different jobs for each finished pin we want and
the blank is the raw material in the BOM for each pin.

I guess you could create a separate warehouse/bin for the EMLl24331C stock
that you issue to the vendor.... Purchase your part 24332C just like you
would any old fab part, and then when you recieve it, subtract the
quantity
recieved from the amount issued in the EML124331C bin. This would create
data that could potentially be tracked in a complex report, but it is
still
two separate transactions that require user intervention in order for the
process to occur.

I'm sure there has to be a way to account for this. How about putting
EML12331C lamination in as a material for the 24332C part?

Of course, coming up with such solutions is not my job, though it is my
job
to write reports that take in to account all the unique ways we've
utilized
vantage.

Thad,

Part # 24332C is being made from Scratch. The Vendor will also be
adding other parts to make 24332C. And 24332C is the final part that
needs to be inventory in our inventory. The EMLl24331C is a lamination
that is need to make 24332C, that we supply to the vendor.
