Hmmm ... let me rephrase this - is ANYONE running V8 for produc

Kevin,

If you took the cost of the 2 WTS servers + licensing and divided it by the
number of thin clients supported ... what would the cost per client be?

Thanks,

Todd Anderson

Cliff,

We're running all our applications off two Citrix servers. All of our
clients connect via Citrix, so their client machines don't matter.
Most of them will be WinTerms - brainless machines.

Sure makes patch application a breeze.

Hmmm ... let me rephrase this - is ANYONE running V8 for production yet?

I've seen a few people posting that they are testing it but has anyone
actually slipped on the noose and taken the jump?

Thanks,

Todd Anderson

We started our implementation in February, but have found that no
version could be considered usable in production until 8.00.800, which
was recently released. This still contains bugs, but we believe we could
actually use it in production without to much trouble. Since heretofore,
it was unclear whether certain "idiosyncracies" were bugs or features,
we have held off some key implementation decisions until now. Epicor
swore that at least 8 sites are using Vantage 8.00 in production several
months ago--perhaps they are not in your vicinity. They certainly are
not anywhere near Virginia Beach.

We're scheduled to go live on it 9/1. Almost done with our
re-implementation of Vantage. We opted not to migrate but rather clean
house and learn the new way with a fresh start.

THE HOOPLA.....
1. The cut and paste saved us tons of hours of data entry into master files.
2. Crystal form redesign wasn't too rough. DO DOWNLOAD THE new Crystal
Runtime !!
3. ODBC rockets great on 8 - nice, fast and easy to migrate RB Reports into
Crystal.
4. The drag and drop document association/attachments is moving us to a
paperless office.
5. Customizations let us setup some screens to match our business forms
making data entry easier.
6. BAM helped to automate report/business form distribution internally &
externally (Our office fax monkey is being retired!)
7. We used an implementation dashboard to track metrics on entry of master
files.

THE POOPLA....
1. Some reports are still slow to preview (primarily our traveler if you opt
to print EVERYTHING)
2. Users are still not getting the hang of the NEW WAY of FILE/NEW to add
records.

THE UNKNOWN.....
(Still need to test)
1. Scheduling (new territory for us)
2. Time Phase
3. WIP transactions
4. Bank Recs & Month End processing

Summary from those I've spoken with about 8. Nightmares with migrating from
6.1 compared to our experience of re-implementing clean. I'll try to update
everyone after we throw the switch. Here's to hoping we don't get
electrocuted!

Sincerely,
Calvin Dekker

Why is it a nightmare to migrate -- is it the volume of old data? That's our
concern.

We are in the middle of implementation, our go live date was July 1st,
however after playing with the software a lot in May (4 training
classes in MA), it became clear that the software was no where near
ready to use. So despite Epicor's thoughts we postponed our go
live
date until Jan 2006. Since than, the software has made leaps and
bounds. During the last training class in MA things were working
great, so I think we are save to continue with our Jan 2006 date.

A little reasoning on way the software was so buggy. I believe Epicor
was forced to release version 8 before it was ready. Epicor's
salesman were selling it last spring/summer, than the problem became
no one was buying version 6 because they all were waiting until 8.0
was released and Epicor was losing money so in order to make some
sales they released the software months before they should have. I
also believe 8.00.800 should have been the first release which is
software that is usable.\

My other big problem with Vantage 8.0 is the training or lack there
of. We are moving from an old version of Profit Key, so everything is
new to use. I have know taken 6 classroom trainings and have a much
better feel for how the software works, however there are still parts
that I do not understand. What I would really like a System Admin
Class. I am also looking forward to perspectives, and hope to pick up
a bunch of stuff there.

Well there's my two cents worth, if anyone cares.
Todd,

This may be a little dated, but I was on a week's vacation and am
just now catching up on postings.

We've been live at one of our divisions with v8 since May 1. We've
got 8 other locations that were to be going live, and those are
being delayed until we get our hands around this implementation
(plus, we've had some internal issues that have added to this).

I saw someone post about why they thought Epicor released 8 (sales
pressures) - don't know if that's true but sounds like a reasonable
explanation to me.

IMO - we've been acting as a beta site.

My impressions of Epicor by area:
- V8 - each release is better than the previous. Our biggest issues
are now performance, but we're hoping 8.00.802 is a big help.
- Tech Support - I think they struggled early on with this software -
they seemed to be undermanned. It seems that this has been
improving. There's some real good ones in tech support - wish we
could clone them.
- Consulting - If we didn't have our consultant - we'd be sunk. The
one we have is a real team player and has been our biggest asset in
this whole implementation. Willing to do whatever it takes and
willing to push the internals within the company as hard as it
takes.
- Custom Development - I think they're undermanned as well. That,
plus the moving target with releases has made custom development
difficult.

We are going to bear the battle scars of going live early - we were
one of the first on 8.0 - live on 8.00.705. I've mentioned to
people in our company that I think this software was a good move (we
did not have Vantage prior - we are moving from a proprietary
package) - the timing was not the best. The software is close to
stabilizing, and once it does, I think we'll be a lot better off.

Cliff,

We're running all our applications off two Citrix servers. All of our
clients connect via Citrix, so their client machines don't matter.
Most of them will be WinTerms - brainless machines.

Sure makes patch application a breeze.

Hello,

I was curious what modules, in particular, advanced ones, that Geordies
and Alfe were running? We are trying to get version 8 up and running
and have been meeting with difficulties as well.
