How to handle parts on spools, reels and in tubes, MRP

We have parts that we stock on reels, tubes, spools and loose. The qty per reel, etc. can be different. We are gearing up to run MRP and we want it to plan by the qty on the reel, etc.
How would be best to do this?

Would it be managed by setting up a UOM? So if we have stock of one reel of 500 parts but our planned job needs a reel of 1000 parts, the resulting suggestion would be to purchase a reel of 1000 parts?

We do have AMM.

Yes you are on the right track the UOM is the key. You could go by the weight of the reel minus the core also.

There is an Advanced UOM module now that can do what you just described (Reel Size) with Part Inventory Attributes entered at the time of receipt as well.
