How to include SW on a BOM

We have an automated cd duplicator in house so that we can always deliver
the most up-to-date version with each shipment. While we don't schedule the
production on the machine in vantage, we can track "recordable cd" as a
purchased part with min order qty (spindle of 100) and allow the system to
make po suggestions based on the cd being needed in a BOM. I know that this
is not exactly what you want, but it is a failrly unobtrusive way to do it.
That way it does not really affect the schedule, and the cd transactions
(software transactions) can be tracked as a purchased part. You can also
update revs through the part master for the recordable cd if your software
versions change.

Another possible option might be to use sales kitting in 803.

I would like to be able to put software on the BOM for our products,
but I do not want this part to drive any MRP suggestions, time phase
requirements, etc. Is there a way to do this in Vantage 8.00? I want
the BOM to indicate what version of software is to be programmed into
the product, but this is obviously not a material good and do not want
Vantage to treat it as one.

Thanks for your help,
Rob
We do not track liquid stock usage (glue, graphite, etc.) cost to jobs.
We add it in the BOMs with a qty / parent as .0001 / 1. When we see an
odd requirement kick out for a job like this, it is our indication to
check with assembly to make sure they have sufficient quantity on the
shelf. Not perfect, but works most of the time.

Instead of treating it like material (BOM), treat it like a resource on
the BOO - a resource group of "SOFTWARE" and each individual program
(for load, test, whatever) is an individual resource.

Of course, if if is truly something you are consuming (software
licenses, for instance) then it IS material, has a cost, gets consumed,
etc....but that's not the way I understood your query.

One of the things you have to be careful of when treating the program
as a resource is creating scheduling conflicts. Since software is not a
tool as such, you can have multiple instances of the software running.
Make sure you don't flag the resource as having a finite capacity or
horizon.
