Hubs vs switches

A 10/100 switch can adjust the network speed for each port. So you can have
10MHZ devices like printers and 100MHz devices (new PC) on the same switch.
Where as hubs are usually 10MHZ or 100 MHZ they will not work with the wrong
speed of network card.

The way I understand it, hubs broadcast packets to all ports connected to
them. A switch reads the address header and only sends a packet to the port
it is addressed for.

Network gurus:

Last week I asked a question about losing network connection at one of our buildings. A couple of responses said that we should use switches instead of hubs. Can you enlighten me on the difference between the two?

Thank you

Mel,

Anybody feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about any of this, because I'm
not 100 percent, but this is the way I hear it, and it seems to work that
way for us.

Switches are faster - hubs have to split up 100mbs among all the ports on
the hub (12-port hub = 100mbs/12). Switches send 100mbs thru each port.
And switches have caches where hubs do not.

Switches are more reliable - error correction. They act as more of a
traffic cop for the network.

Switches have programmable security features.

I haven't had time to play around with any settings on ours, but I know
this... since I replaced our hubs with switches, I lost most of our Vantage
error messages and lockups (except for occasional mischievous workstation
hardware).

A hub is "dumb" and a switch is "smart". In other words; a switch remembers
the addresses of nodes and will send traffic there the shortest way.
