Microsoft knows that running a web browser on a server that can load ActiveX
objects is dangerous so they disabled the feature in a "lock-down" mode.

Instead of disabling this safety feature, I installed Fire Fox to do normal
browsing from there and use IE for Updates/Epicor etc. Works great.

FYI - just in case you haven't noticed it ...

Microsoft is now including IE-v7 as a "High Priority" update under Windows
Update.

This also translates as, if you have automatic updates turned on, IE-v7 will
be part of the "automatic" updates.

And, as a corallary, Quickbooks just flashed a msg at me that IE-v7 doesn't
play nice with Quickbooks.

Why exactly does MS feel that we all --WANT-- IE-V7 ?

Heck, Firefox V2 does just fine ..........

Todd Anderson
Todd,

Why do you think MS came out with IE7?...............becasue of
Firefox!

I just installed a new server (for Vantage 8) and Windows 2003 Server R2 came with IE7 and I am really hating it. EVERY web site I go to flashes a warning and I have to add it to a manual list of "OK" sites. I can't find how to disable this. Worse yet is the amber security bar at the top of virtually every page claiming i have to click there to view the page. I can't find how to disable this too. When I weaken the security settings I get messages like "your computer may be at risk" all over the place. Seems their answer to plugging security holes is to make the browser not worth using. I am getting really frustrated with it and have installed Firefox instead. I think IE7 will be the best thing that ever happend for Firefox.

2003 R2 Server with IE6 you could remove the enhanced security in the
add/remove programs windows setup - don't know about IE7

Of course the only website the vantage server visits is the Epicor
download site...

I've been using IE7 for about 6 or 7 months, and don't really have any
issues with it. I also have Firefox, and Opera. I need to stay with IE
because I have numerous customer sites that don't recognize other brousers.
I also use AdShield www.ad-shield.com and this does a wonderfull job of
blocking flash ads and the like.

Thanks for the update, I remember reading this a while ago, but had
totally forgotten. Anyone used it in terminal server yet?

I have not been too impressed by IE7, certainly a step up, but still
inherently flawed. I'm not going to be a Microsoft basher, but this does
reek of semi-unethical practice.

From Microsoft's standpoint, they are seeing their browser market-share
dropping (at least the last time I checked) and they have a vested
interest in seeing that it goes no lower. They can call their release
"High Priority" all they want. I do imagine there are a large number of
security changes, and it seems like the underlying structure of the
software has changed pretty drastically, but it really seems they just
wanted to force a rollout in order to get some people to switch back
over to IE7.

So I guess the bottom line is Microsoft doesn't care if we want it or
not - we are going to get it anyway.

I would agree that Firefox v2 is my browser of choice, and actually what
users are using on terminal server. Users see a lot less error messages
and my help calls drop dramatically when the user is on Firefox. It has
its own share of problems though, including a memory leak that I think
most people are aware of.

Todd,

The things you are describing are a result of Windows Server 2003 NOT
IE7. I had the same issues with new intalls of Win2003 IE 6 and
eventually found my way to 'disable' them. I don't remember exactly what
they all were but I do remember it took a fair amount of poking around.
