You can also turn off "Broadcast" in the TCP/IP settings for the network card on the Win95 PC's. This polls the network and can cause major system slowdowns

Try changing your network card to 10MBPS/Half Duplex. We
found that we had some cards that did not play well together with
our switch (Autonegotiating). Hard setting the card speed cleared
up the problem on machines we were having problems with.

If you're going to ver 5, be sure and do the following:
.
1. Do a database analysis FIRST, and if your "scatter factor" is too
high, do a "dump-and-load". Epicor does NOT have a "dump-and-load" for
ver 5 ready yet!
( I wish I had known this BEFORE we went to ver 5)

2. Un-install Progress 9.0 from every workstation. Then go into"
regedit", and delete all references to the "epicor" directory.

3. Clear out the vntgwork directories

4. Reboot and install Progress 9.1A & Vantage

.... and don't put both Vantage 4 & 5 on the same
workstation!!!!!!!!!!!! I tried, and had to Norton's CleanSweep to
remove both of them!

Britt,

Thanks for the pointers. What exactly do you mean by "scatter factor" and "dump-and-load"? Are these things for only people with Provision?

Databases tend to get fragmented (just like your hard drive), and when records get deleted, the database doesn't recover the empty space. A Dump-and-load, which Epicor can help you walk through, can save space and increase performance.

Our 500MB 3.0 database went down to 280MB after a dump and load yesterday. (We had converted it to 4.0 first, then deleted labor records older than one year, then did the dump and load.).

I'm very glad we did it. Epicor designed a custom DL kit so that the load would include some custom tables that we had designed for Data Collection in 3.0.

It may be more practical to remove the old 3.0 client and progress 8.3
install first, before upgrading, so you don't have to sort between versions
in the registry.

On my version 3 client install, there is no reference to "epicor", so
searching for "vantage" in REGEDIT would be better. MAKE SURE TO MAKE A
BACKUP OF THE REGISTRY before going through and deleting all the "Vantage"
keys. There is no undo in REGEDIT.

For ver 3, I think the "share" dir was "dwc"
Ver 4 used "epicor" as the share dir.

In regards to removing the registry entries..
I did an uninstall of my progress client..
I ran an UNREGOCX file from Vantage Support..
I do a search of epicor and the first one I come across for example is..

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{3AA8042B-DF1C-11D3-B240-0004AC5B140B}\1.0\0\win32

Default \\poweredge\epicor\vantage\dll\progress IPC.OCX

Would that be one to remove? And everyone I come across as well? There
seems to be a lot of these.

I removed every reference which included "epicor". You do not need
anything on the old path. I just removed the "default" key (on the right
side) only.

I had probably 10-15 references on each workstation.

I would however backup the registry first.

There are some additional registry and IP tuning tricks you can try. For
example, there are several shareware registry cleaning tools available. For
the most part, they look for and remove registry entries without a
corresponding link. So, if you have removed your old version, they will
identify all of the registry entries (epicor, vantage, etc...) without a
file reference and give you the option of removing them.

Additionally, there are tools you can use to optimize your IP configuration
like the RWIN setting (IP Buffer).

Unfortunately that did not resolve my problem of a very very slow log on to
the new server. A clean machine connects no problem, all going through the
same hardware.

I removed every reference which included "epicor". You do not need
anything on the old path. I just removed the "default" key (on the right
side) only.

I had probably 10-15 references on each workstation.

I would however backup the registry first.

Try changing your network card to 10MBPS/Half Duplex. We
found that we had some cards that did not play well together with
our switch (Autonegotiating). Hard setting the card speed cleared
up the problem on machines we were having problems with.

Thad
The problem is that I did remove the progress client first, but the
uninstall doesn't remove all the registry entries.
For ver 3, I think the "share" dir was "dwc"
Ver 4 used "epicor" as the share dir.
