Importing BOM from Access

Hi Dina,
As Troy mentioned, there is an Import tool that you can purchase from
Support. We had one developed for us a few years back. We had a Custom
Estimating program, done in Access. They gave us our own "Custom Tables"
that we could freely push data to. The Import program would then be run to
pull the data into all the appropriate places in Vantage. It cost us about
$1500.00 back in 3.0. With each version the price kept going up, and ODBC
kept becoming less stable. In our attempts to get it to work with 4.0 and
Access, I think we had half of Epicor involved. Ultimately, we decided to
get away from Access, and are delevoping an Estimating tool using Product
Configurator. Pricing may be stable now, but you might just ask before you
buy.

Is there any secure way to import to Vantage from Access? I have BOM
with several hundred parts that I want to input this into Vantage
without having to retype this.

I know in the past there was security issues with ODBC - is this still
the case? I am running 4.0 currently but will be switching to 5.2 next
week.

Thanks,

Dina

Hi Dina,
I think the main issue with using ODBC to move data INTO Vantage is 'integrity', not security. Many times there multiple places in Vantage that get updated with one piece of information. Updating one field in one table without all the 'triggers' being flipped so to speak, can leave Vantage in unconnected pieces, putting your data at risk, and also leaving you with Epicor saying, "we'll have to charge you extra to fix this problem".

There is in Vantage a simple BOM import feature, but it has defininte limitations. There is also the Epicor product Import/Export add on that you can purchase for about $2500 which will populate tables in Vantage via Excel/Access. And Epicor does support it. It was developed by Epicor's Development team for doing Conversions from other Database Systems into Vantage. There was enough demand for it that they began to market it separately. Kind of pricey for the average user, though.
