Informal Poll about open issues

Right now - 15 open calls with SCR's already written up for 10 of them.

Of the remaining 5 open calls; the serious 3 are in development, 1 is new
and not a show-stopper and I know the remaining 1 can't be duplicate by
Epicor.

All told; this is really quite good. Particularly when viewed from where it
was a few months ago.

The optimist in me is encouraged that when you report a bug (that can be
confirmed as a bug) it gets put on the list to be fixed. I think that is
about as good as it gets working with any software company. The 808 patch
change list included something like 45 pages of SCR's; so Epicor can fix a
bunch of bugs rather fast.

It appears that this group is experiencing a high percentage of their open
calls getting addressed through the SCR process. This indicates that we are
pointing out things that are really broken instead of not working the way we
might prefer them to work. Epicor appears to appreciate the quality
assurance service we are providing to them by fixing the bugs as they get
reported.

Everyone,

We currently have 11 open issues with Vantage support, 10 of them have
bug numbers. How about the rest of the group? Are you seeing similar
numbers of issues and bugs?

I'm having a hard time getting a response from Support about
resolution of a couple of these items and wanted to gauge responses
from the list before I started rattling some of the bigger branches on
the Epicor Tree!

We have 5 open issues. Non have been assigned bug numbers. 2 of them
are functional issues where something is not working correctly and have
our database for both situations.

Ron,

Our v8 implementation is currently on hold (internal issues). Last summer,
before putting the project on hold we submitted about 20 v8 issues that were
given bug or enhancement #'s. I tried to get updates from support,
unfortunately the development team did not keep support updated on the
issues. However, every time a patch is released that fixes one of the
issues, I do receive an automated notice that the issue was closed. About
half of the issues we reported were classified by development as
"enhancement requests" instead of bugs and none were "critical" to us. 50%
of the issues were addressed 3 months after being reported (2 service packs
later) and all were addressed after 6 months.

We chose to go with Epicor rather than another vendor and to go with v8
instead of the more stable v6. We knew being on the bleeding edge would be
a bumpy ride. Even companies with huge resources like Microsoft take a
month or more to address critical issues in mature products, so I guess
Epicor's not doing that bad. We have seen tremendous progress, but we are
still somewhat disappointed. Going forward we are only taking "critical"
issues higher up the Epicor tree (issues that would stop our
implementation).

Having worked on an enterprise application software development team, I know
it takes time to role out fixes. For those that haven't been exposed to
software development processes, here is some of what causes issues to take
what may seem like forever to be addressed.
1. The development team first has to duplicate the issue. This can take a
while, especially if the person reporting the problem doesn't provide
extremely detailed information. Trouble reports without enough details
often get the form response "functioning as designed" since the developer
can't duplicate the problem.
2. If the issue is with a tools vendor (MS .NET, Crystal Reports, Progress,
etc.) the developer has to report the issue to the vendor and wait on a fix
from the vendor. Once the fix comes in, the developer needs to thoroughly
test that the fix doesn't break something else. The 808 patch with Crystal
XI R2 is a perfect example, the fix from the Crystal increased the reporting
speed as desired, but broke Win 2000 clients.
3. As crazy as it sounds, next the developer has to determine what the
correct application behavior SHOULD BE. You see, not every customer agrees
what should happen in a specific circumstance, so the developers need to
work with the business analysts (the people who set and document the
specific requirements of what the application is supposed to do) to
determine if it's truly a bug. If it is functioning as designed, the
business analysts and development team need to discuss whether they should
change the design or not.
4. Once a bug is identified, the development team has to prioritize the
issue against other issues they are working on and schedule it for a coming
patch.
5. A developer has to design, code and test the change/fix. If they do a
poor job on this step, they end up breaking something else which is a common
complaint on this list.
6. The quality assurance team needs to test and document the change and
upload it to the files download areas.
