Inventory Process

Sharma:

How many items in your inventory? With three thousand items it took three
really good data entry people about 5 hours to enter all of our counts. The
Inventory Count method in Vantage is well thought-out, zeroes the balances,
gives you reports of what you've entered, what's discrepant, totals, and you
can have separate counts for each warehouse and so on. The counts don't
change until you post the count. We used it extensively until we got an
inventory method in place that allowed us to use cycle counting.

You can actually pull count sheets with report builder if you aren't
required to keep them with your parts after count for an audit.

Guess I'm saying look at what you have and your capabilities before you go
spending days developing something that doesn't save you that much.

But, entering all the data in a palm and beaming it to the server sure
sounds like a great idea to me.

I recently got a palm pilot, for my own personal use, and have found
programs that upload excel and CSV files to a PalmOS system.

I would recommend doing an excel or csv export of inventory records from
vantage or a 4GL app, add a new column for new qty's, then transfer the
excel file (or appropriately sized chunks of it at a time) to the palm
device, write in the new qty's, then upload it to the PC, and print the
modified records out for data entry.

As far as getting the updated records back into vantage, you'll need either
4GL-Provision (~$5000), or one of epicor's custom import modules (~$2500).

There are progress developers on the Progress Email group (peg.com) that
write progress database apps for the palmpilot, but I know little of the
details.

Without having a custom import solution, giving a lithographically modified
representation of the excel file to data entry is still probably the most
efficient means for users that aren't skilled in the art of Palm Grafitti.
