Issue Material Screen

Thanks for everyone's assistance with this. While most of the answers
provided would probably work. What I ended up doing was a customization
of the combo box with these settings:

Autowidth = true

AutoWidthOption = manual

Col1ManualWidth = 50

Col2ManualWidth = 100

Col3ManualWidth = 600

Col4ManualWidth = 10

I've been working with epicor since sep 08 and have similar issues. A
lot of what i've learned is from others. However I also learn by just
trying to push the envelope a bit -- okay a lot.
Epicor is written in .net so if epicor doesn't have an example then I go
look for .net examples. Epicor is a subset of what is offered in .net.
However, even without sdk, you can still access the .net environment.

OK, I admit I may be a noob but what is the best source for REALLY
getting
what an epicombo box is/does, what is meant by a "native" control, etc.
I
understand controls are a XML/VB thing so I'm not looking for an
explanation
of VB but I am interested in stuff that Epicor does with Vantage that is
atypical (not in a reference I can get at the bookstore). What resources
are available (perchance with explained examples)? Thanks!

select the drop down by the Mtl field and it displays the part and

anyone know if there is a way to adjust what this displays?

It's actually truncating or is the control just not wide enough?

Try going into customization mode and widening the control display field.

The control is long enough. Here is an example of what I see when I
select the drop down:

10 401-11866 TUBE PLANETA

It should at least say 401-118660, it's cutting off the last digit in
the part.

Not sure what I would use for a customization on this one.

Travis,
You will need a custom search, maybe a BAQ search, that will allocate more room for the part number and less for the seq number.

In customization mode and add a textbox control (make it nice and wide... to handle up to 30 characters) next to the native control - linking it to the same dataview.field as the native control.

I don't have a connection into vantage right now so I can't check this - but you may find the native control is link to material sequence number (or an assy seq number - not the actual p/n). If that proves true, the text box will display that seq numbre (and not the part number).

If that's the case, change your textbox data.field to be the actual part number.

You should then see the full p/n.

If that is to cludgy for the users, use an epicombo box instead so the users can use the pulldown menu (and see full p/n's) to select the part to issue.

You'd need the SDK license to change the control. (Not worth it.)

Just hide the native control and add your own epicombobox tied to JobMtl.PartNumber (exact field name may be wrong... working from memory here.)

I believe you can do this without going through all of this.

I'm using 8.03.405A

I'm able to change the width of the dropdown by going into customization.

Select the drop-down

In the customization look at the AutoWidth, AutoWidthOption and then below
that the ColXManualWidth (1-4)

I changed the autowidth to false

Kept autowidthoption = auto

Then set Col1ManualWidth =30

Same for Col2-4.

Save customization, go back to main menu and go back in.

You can change the column widths to suit your needs, but this shows you how.

OK, I admit I may be a noob but what is the best source for REALLY getting
what an epicombo box is/does, what is meant by a "native" control, etc. I
understand controls are a XML/VB thing so I'm not looking for an explanation
of VB but I am interested in stuff that Epicor does with Vantage that is
atypical (not in a reference I can get at the bookstore). What resources
are available (perchance with explained examples)? Thanks!

I would reccomend getting a copy of the Epicor Tools Guide from your CAM.

There is also information in the help files - search for customization

I've been working with epicor since sep 08 and have similar issues. A lot of what i've learned is from others. However I also learn by just trying to push the envelope a bit -- okay a lot.
Epicor is written in .net so if epicor doesn't have an example then I go look for .net examples. Epicor is a subset of what is offered in .net. However, even without sdk, you can still access the .net environment.

Thanks!

Another great source: is Epicor's help desk.

Call them. Ask them. You'll be amazed at how many documents they have that will give you great information.
Some stuff they've given me I can't find even searching on the KB of their website.

A lot of times that first tier of support won't really know the answer to what you want, but they'll open a ticket, look around and I guarantee they'll get back to you quickly (same day normally) with some useful information.

I will say that most of your problems are more likely easier solved not through changing the form and the VB behind it, but rather looking at the business objects and methods behind it all.

In other words, you have a form, with controls. If you're thinking "change the combo box to display different" I recommend change the BO that loads the dataset that the combo box displays instead. If this makes sense.

The user interface controls used on uncustomized (native) vantage application forms are produced by a company called Infragistics. (Epicor was smart and simply licensed use of the control instead of coding them from scratch.)

These controls are hooked into business object methods that are what make an application work. They are also hooked into specific table.fields (or, as in Time Phase, temp table fields the app generates on the fly from persistent data table records based on user input in a spefic control - In time phase's case: The part number entered.)

Where Epicor went a little too far is with ultracomboboxes. The result is something that probably helps sell new installations but is a pain in the rear end in use (and when it comes to customizing).

In your case (the ultracombo box that displays the job material number & the part number in one line in the pull down ultra combo box of Material issue), they have modified the basic ultracombobox to display two related table.fields for each record as a single displayed line (perhaps the cause of your truncated part number - which I still say is can be resolved simply by changin the width of the controls display field).

The system is laced with native ultra combo boxes like this and, when they interfere whith efficient user processing (the goal), it is often easier to change their properties so they aren't visible & replace them with an epiultracombobox (from you customization toolbox) that simply displays the single root tableview.field that the native control was tied to.

I've yet to run into one where when I;ve done that the native business object method triggered by the native control is not still invoked properly.

When I suggested tying a plain old epitextbox to the same tablview.field that your Issue Material material selection native control was tied to, it was just a technique that you can use to reveal what a std epiultracombobox control would display were you to hide the native on and add your won back into the app.

(Example: If it is showing job material number, it wouldn't be much use - but if it would show ONLY part number, it would be more use than the native control for many users - and not truncate the p/n in the process).

Some suggested you buy the User guide - and you should if you are going to do any customization. Except for tha lack of an index (typical 'half done' Epicor behavior!) it is an excellent resource. If your going to be writing BAQ's & BPM's, go to Progress' site and download the 1000+ page pdf of their 4GL language book.

For basic VB.NET programming, nothing beats microsoft's technet site. They give away a ton of free code examples that'll you'll make great use of over time. If you've done VBscript programming with MS-Office apps, you'll find VB.NET is pretty much the same (but more object oriented/event triggered instead of serial script based).

Hope that helps.

Rob

Thanks to all who responded with info on Vantage customization - I'm trying
to get background info on business objects, Crystal reports oddities, etc,
too. I'm not into it very far yet - I've done some BAQs and Dashboards but
that is about it. Anyway, thanks to all who wrote.
